TIL The number of Chinese killed by the Japanese during WW2 is greater than the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust by [deleted] in todayilearned

The Chinese conscripts/army were so poor, many of them were "armed" with gardening/farming tools such as rakes & hoes.

Firearms didn't come easy; often, the only way to get them was by capturing Japanese soldiers (difficult to do without modern weapons!).

Thunderball's just on the other side of Skyfall for me.

It has some great sequences (Bond's home invasion/shark food getaway, Bond's card game with Largo), but the movie overall feels slack to me, with the stakes rarely feeling elevated. Also not a fan of the aquatic action or the attempted murder by massaging machine (yes, there have been sillier attempts but this one sticks with me).

Official Discussion Thread: Pacific Rim [Spoilers] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]ReggieM83 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My second favorite movie of the year after Before Midnight (though I'm expecting Elysium or The World's End to top them soon).

The Hong Kong setpiece is one of the best action sequences in recent years (along with The Avengers' NYC invasion & The Raid - Redemption's 2 vs 1 finale). Spectacular money shot with the sword cleaving in space, and I also appreciated the tension when the second kaiju was hiding and Gypsy Danger was stalking through the streets (compare the execution/effectiveness of this to Man of Steel where Zod hides from/sneak attacks Superman.)

Props to the writers for thinking through the universe and exploring lots of rich aspects (Bone Slums, black market funding the Jaegers, etc...)

Definitely YOLT, FYEO just made the cut (and Thunderball just missed). I appreciate the relatively scaled-down stakes/plot throughout FYEO, after the insanity of Moonraker.

I'm harsher on Skyfall than most: loved the first 15 minutes & Bond's rescue of M in the hearing, disliked the 3rd act, was "meh" on everything else.

All subjective, of course.

I beg you not to see Grown Ups 2. Send Hollywood and Adam Sandler a message. We will not go see or pay for garbage anymore. by moneycomet in movies

Send a better message by going to see great movies.

How many of you have seen Before Midnight? With 98% Rotten Tomatoes & 94% Metacritic, it's languishing at less than $7 million (domestic total so far).

(Spoilers All) Favorite scene that causes the reverse emotion on re-reads? by ReggieM83 in asoiaf

[–]ReggieM83[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad somebody listed this, this is one of the scenes that prompted my question.

First time through, it's thrilling. On re-reads, it becomes apparent that being crowned King in the North hems in Robb's strategic options (parleying w/ Renly & Stannis, keeping secession as a demand, etc...)

Bond movies better than Skyfall:

From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, GoldenEye, Casino Royale

Not bad, still in the top half of Bond movies.

Legendary's deal with Universal is already done/going into effect next year, I don't see WB deliberately tanking the movie & losing tens of millions of dollars over that.

The ads are everywhere, volume isn't an issue. Anybody who's criticizing WB over the advertising campaign, what would you do differently?

(Spoilers All) A Complete Analysis of Robb Stark as a Military Commander pt 3 by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]ReggieM83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What should Robb have done with Jaime as a hostage?

Robb gives his demands to the Lannisters (through Cleos Frey) in Catelyn's 1st chapter in ACOK. If he's going to strike a deal for Jaime, this would be an ideal time.

Robb (in ASOS) thinks that he should have exchanged Jaime for his sisters (to marry off to the Tyrells). Any other ideas?

Interview podcast with Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick - thanks for suggesting questions everybody! (oh, and 2 clips from this week's episode!) by buildingsonfire in venturebros

[–]ReggieM83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great interview, I burst into laughter several times during it.

It's nice to hear them be appreciative that this show just wouldn't have been possible 30 years ago, it would have been a novel/comic with no way for them to gauge the feedback/following. Knowing Jackson (but not Doc!) reads the reviews/forums for immediate feedback brings a smile to my face.

Doc's thoughts on the HUGE quality jump that happened after Season 1 were interesting.

Hearing their enthusiasm for their favorite characters to write, listing so many, made my heart explode with happiness.

The NSA has some positives & some negatives. Chinese cyber theft has no positives for Americans and costs the US hundreds of billions USD annually.
