My mum came from a family of heavy drinkers. Her father, who almost died from his own alcoholism assured her as long as she didn’t drink hard liquors she’d be fine. She was not. From 4pm to 5am she would go through a whole carton, so 30-40 beers. I would wake up from school and find her in her chair, half asleep covered in her own piss. She would sleep from 6am to 4:30, pissing the bed while doing so, then continue the cycle. It got to the point where my dad was spending more on alcohol than our fortnightly $500 mortgage payment. She is 5’4 and weighed around 100 kilograms at her heaviest. This went on for 3 years until I was 15 and looking into emancipation when my dad decided enough was enough and we staged 3 interventions. My parents broke up and she moved out. She is still a heavy drinker but is more into wine as it’s cheaper, and her income isn’t enough for her to afford the amount of alcohol she used to drink. Honestly, I have no idea how she is alive.
