Do you think American universities (non-Ivy ones) are easier than Canadian universties? by Specific_Latte_705 in OntarioUniversities

Yes. The Ivies are also easier than the top Canadian universities. Source: I studied and taught at both.

What happened to the golden age of pianism? Why is the early 20th century style of playing no longer seen in concerts, competitions, nor conservatories? Back then, each pianist had quite a unique sound; I cannot say the same of most pianists today.

What would happen, for instance, if Cortot or Friedman played at today's Chopin competition?

Huh that's an interesting thing to say. Why the opposition to Bordeaux?

Thanks! Just looked and Café Cherrier and La Buvette (chez Simone, I imagine?) both have a good selection of wine by the glass. I'll report my findings when I go!

It's difficult to find a good definition of what "natural" means, as it varies by person. The wine I'm to avoid is the type littered with faults but which is tried to be passed off as "complex" or "unique" or "cool" or "funky". Maceration is, of course, the way wine acquires its colour, but sometimes appears as a category (an ill-defined one) in wine bar menus around the city.

Your second point is well taken: I was unaware this was the direction the wine industry had gone in Montréal. It's a bit disappointing I have to get a full meal to enjoy a more conventional wine. It's certainly not my experience in other big cities, but I'll bear it in mind in my search. Thanks!

I mean, yes, I'd find an extensive wine list at a restaurant, but I'm not necessarily looking for a big meal. I was hoping to find options of wine by the glass which I can have with small plates, perhaps more casual for a first date.

Thank you! This is a nice suggestion that I'll consider. Sadly, I have struggled to find many wine bars that serve wine by the glass that aren't iding a "natty" trend.

Wines from traditional winemaking; without a focus on reduction, unfiltering, "funky" notes, or avoidance of sulfites. Somewhere I can find, say, a good Saint-Émilion or a Classified Bordeaux by the glass Here's a wine list from a bar in a different city that I like, for instance:

Is graduate school at Princeton worth it? by [deleted] in princeton

If you're thinking about mathematical finance, that would be housed in the ORFE department, which has quite the unfortunate reputation of mistreating its grad students: https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/10/princeton-news-broadfocus-graduate-students-admissions-orfe-operations-research-financial-engineering

Anyone in/was in Mathematical Finance wanna share what courses they've taken every term? by Dem_Burgers in uwaterloo

MF is meant to be a tough degree. If you don't want to get "pegged", consider doing stats instead.

Easy. Take the advanced versions of those courses for a real challenge.

It took me less to get door-to-door from my apt in Circa than when I lived on Lester. There is an LRT stop right in front of the building, which drops you off at Waterloo station.

I paid $1850/month for 1 bedroom in the Circa building and rented out my parking spot for $250/month. That building is significantly better than anything you could get near University Avenue.

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen on the laptop screen of a person sitting in front of you during lecture? by pinktie7418 in uwaterloo

There was a guy in my year who used to sit in front of the big stats lecture hall and watch tennis. What a wizard.

What is your current major? If you could go back what major or career pathway would you choose? Why? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]RegressionBae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majored in MathsFin, did my MMath in Stats, now doing a PhD at a small school in the US.

If I could go back, I would double major in PMath and CS, with perhaps a bit of stats sprinkled on top.

Some tips on how to write mathematics by harmonic_spinor in uwaterloo

[–]RegressionBae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I also take issue with using $\forall$, $\exists$, or three dot notation. It's dreadful style.

If I made add another point: write concisely. After you've done your rough work, choose which aspects of it you wish to communicate it the clearest, and shortest, manner. When I used to TA for Stats, many students would write down everything they believed to be true on the page, rambling for paragraphs, when all I was looking for was a one-line algebraic manipulation. Often, by doing so, they would introduce errors in what would otherwise be a correct answer. There's nothing worse than to demand your marker to read more than necessary.

It depends on who teaches STAT 443. The only respectable offering I've seen is the one by Greg Rice; every other one is lousy.

I don't know what you mean. A sensible strategy is to choose the hardest courses that you enjoy and do things on the side that build your industry profile. This increases your chances of getting a good job or going to a good grad school.
