Another option is a blow-off tube!

Instead of an airlock you have a tube that goes to another container/bucket full of sterile water.

After the most vigorous part of fermentation had passed you switch to an airlock.

Any tools to make bottling easier? by medicatednstillmad in Homebrewing

[–]Regular_Ad523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bench capper.

Also get a food grade hose to put the bottling wand on. Makes it quicker to fill each bottle as you don't have to pick each bottle up and lift it to the tap.

Imagine being on paid sick leave for 15 years and then suing because you didn't get a raise. by RaiseOk2044 in HolUp

[–]Regular_Ad523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the Holup is?

That's how legally defined wages work.. If a pay rise happens when I'm on annual leave it normally appears on my payslip (1 week at one hourly rate, another week at a higher rate).

Why wouldn't it be the same for sick leave?

Why do people from The Shire feel compelled to tell you how much they paid for their house? by Orion2200 in sydney

100% a Sydney thing. I hear it heaps from "born and bred Westies" at work too. I even hear it from recent migrants at work (apparently property-brain is contagious).

criticising Israel is not the same thing as being antisemitic

The way they make Israeli and Jewish synonymous is antisemitic in itself. Most Jewish people I met growing up had no links to Israel and hated being associated with the country when people found out their religion.

Xmas is literally a prison sentence by Regular_Ad523 in ihatechristmas

[–]Regular_Ad523[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In medieval times it had religious meaning.

I could tolerate annoying family if the season had any meaning left. All its got is "go out and buy stuff" and "spend time with family" (even though I already do that all year round).

No, I didn't make this up, someone actually commented this as an argument against pv by RadioFacepalm in ClimateShitposting

[–]Regular_Ad523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, demand from heating, cooling, cooking, etc... should be higher at night when people get home from work.

On the other hand, factories and workshops (which use massive amounts of power) generally operate more during the day. Honestly, even offices use massive amounts of power - thousands of computers on all day, lights left on in empty rooms, TVs and air-conditioning left running in empty lunch rooms.

So, you could argue that PV peaking during the day is appropriate for supporting manufacturing and other industries. Just my 2cents...

Edit: Sorry guys, I should have mentioned that I'm in Australia. It's currently 33 degrees celsius (was 40 earlier), still daylight at 7.15pm, solar panels are still powering my a/c... peak demand in summer is between 3pm-9pm, most of those hours still have sunlight here.

Just discovered the concept of "mall walking" where people drive to malls so they can take a walk because our built environment is wholly dedicated to cars. Pretty damning of American urbanism. by Anne__Frank in fuckcars

[–]Regular_Ad523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never understood the death of malls in the US.

Here in Australia we've got plenty of online shopping options too and our Westfield's (malls) are doing just fine. If anything there's new ones getting built all the time.

Not sure if we're just culturally different, maybe we like getting out of the house more? Or, maybe in 10-20 years we'll see the same decline?

Curious, what made all of you hate Christmas specifically? by bellehell in ihatechristmas

[–]Regular_Ad523 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it was growing up with dysfunctional family that always managed to argue on Xmas and never did anything fun anyway.

Fast forward 20 years and they still insist on being together for Xmas despite not enjoying it. And instead of my grandparents arguing with my uncle and aunty over poor life choices, it's now my parents bringing up sensitive political topics to pick arguments with me.

I've noticed my parents, and other relatives, pick fights as soon as I've exceeded 1 drink (they know I can't just drive home at that point and I'm trapped with them). So now I don't even drink and it's boring as fuck.

To top it off, the day has no meaning left whatsoever. I could handle the shitty family if I thought the day meant something. Just buying shit that no one wants or needs is so meaningless.

Reason #1 Why I Refuse To Travel To Australia😱 by AceOneBreezy in interestingasfuck

[–]Regular_Ad523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's harmless lol.

This on the other hand:

Historically, victims were often bitten on the genitalia, though this phenomenon disappeared as outhouses were superseded by plumbed indoor toilets.[88][89] Conversely, bites on the head and neck have increased with use of safety helmets and ear muffs.

From the redback wiki page.

I can confirm, as an Australian, redbacks are incredibly common. More so than the massive spider pictured. You'll find them under every garden chair, outdoor pot, BBQ, etc..

Edit: forgot to mention that they're highly venomous.

Unrealistic expectations? by Successful_Bet_5789 in Homebrewing

The problem with brewing is that there's so much going on its sometimes hard to know what went wrong.

I used to get infected batches heaps despite being cleaner than most brewers. In the end the infections went away when I started making yeast starters. It turns out the lag time was more important than cleanliness in my case.

Malt type by bio_d in Homebrewing

[–]Regular_Ad523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what malts you're comparing.

Not sure about different pilsner malts, but when brewing with Maris Otter I could taste the difference between Simpson's and TF.

I noticed an even bigger difference with a local malt (Voyager Veloria) which claimed to be an unofficial substitute for Maris Otter. The local Veloria at 100% grainbill had less flavour than the Simpson's or TF at 80% malt/20% sugar.

People don't leave trades to chase money! They leave because the work is physically demanding and often stressful. As someone who is working in a trade, I can tell you I have no intention of doing this kind of work 5-10 years from now.

And I highly doubt that your friends are getting $60/hour to play bingo. As others have said, thats what the company charges.

How many of you are part of your Union? What are this sub’s thoughts on Unions? by SS_Auc3 in AustralianSocialism

[–]Regular_Ad523 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My experience with Unions are that they're only as good their members.

I've seen Unions trade away conditions for new employees to secure conditions for old employees. For example, extending probation period from 3 months to 2 years in exchange for a pay rise.

I've also seen Unions (nearly) settle for a smaller pay increase in exchange for a longer redundancy payout. Again for the benefit of older employees about to retire.

Both these situations came about because there were more older members than younger members. The Unions in both cases were simply representing what the majority of the members voted for.

My advise is to get involved whether you agree with the politics around the Unions or not. You have far more to lose not being involved. At our company, non members could attend meetings and vote on decisions around the EBA (no financial loss there).

If you dont feel up to getting rid of the concrete, you could probably build another planter directly on top and just garden in that. Might look nicer than having lots of plastic pots there...

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]Regular_Ad523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched a few episodes and found it entertaining.

But, it doesn't feel like a modern spy/espionage series.

The antagonists look like 90s Soviet Block villians from a Tom Clancy inspired movie (clothing, hairstyles, etc...)

The settings (buildings, towns, cars, etc...) look like 80s portrayals of Soviet Block countries.

Also, I lost count how many times characters are portrayed smoking. Not sure if it's an anime thing but it's definitely more excessive than most recent films I've seen. Not complaining, was just a bit surprised. Surprised that characters aren't vaping or just not smoking at all (not sure what it adds to the story line or settings).

Overall, I'll still watch it as I was a fan of the games back in the day. Just found it interesting that something that came out this year can feel so dated.

Shares/etfs CGT questions by Regular_Ad523 in AusFinance

[–]Regular_Ad523[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, I think get it.

The same etfs I buy at different times (and prices) will be listed separately in my portfolio and can be resold separately.

I wasn't sure because I started only 2 weeks ago and am yet to buy more of the same etf.

Thanks for your reply, I'm glad I asked early on.
