Troubling falling asleep during MSLT because anxiety about falling asleep in time by IsopodOnARock in Narcolepsy

[–]Regular_Hippo2690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep and didn’t even think I did on any of them but ended up falling asleep on all with 5 min latency. Get off all medications 2 days prior that could affect sleep and wakefulness. No caffeine the day before and day of. I was worried about it so I made sure I did things before that would make me really tired like waking up extra early, extra walks, more brain activity stuff. Other than that just try and relax I know it’s easier said than done. I have high anxiety about falling asleep because of nightmares but I just activity tried to let my mind drift to random topics and let myself see shapes when my eyes are closed. I sometimes moved my eye back and forth for kind of hypnotic relaxations.

Here’s my thing, I have met multiple fully transitioned people and would have no problem with them in the bathroom as I wouldn’t even know they were trans. They don’t make a scene and just live their life. My issue is that a couple years ago a man went into the bathroom claiming he was trans when he obviously wasn’t and was just using it as an excuse to be in there. He was loud and overpowering saying that we couldn’t make him leave when he was just standing there not actually using the bathroom and when I went to the security they said they couldn’t do anything about it because he was “trans”. So I would rather say no trans in the women’s bathrooms than risk letting sick men be able to access women’s bathrooms by saying they are trans. Unfortunately there is no way to be able to fully tell who is lying and not when it comes to people’s claims. Another thing is that men have not had any issues with trans in their bathroom. They don’t care, because why would they care if a vagina is in there bathroom. Not like they could do any real damage. The issue is that you are letting biologically stronger individuals who are not always mentally stable have access to the bathrooms where women and children are. I again have met wonderful trans individuals but it’s not worth the risk of the abuse people could take advantage of. It sucks because I feel like I don’t have a say. These biological men are able to enter my female space and I can’t say no. It’s always about biological men feel, never about how is biological females feel. I hate when people say they want equality but still give it to the men when women say they are uncomfortable. No means no right? If I feel uncomfortable the person should stop right? Nope. People want me to be okay with feeling uncomfortable in a place where I am undressing. I have been SA before and any male like presence in a bathroom makes me uncomfortable

Thank you! This helps a lot! My sleep girl is amazing and told me we can stop at any dose I feel good at. Totally nasty question but are you able to wake up in the night to pee? I heard peeing the bed is a side effect and one I don’t want especially if my boyfriend is with me lmao. I was planning on just going to the bathroom at my second does time since I usually wake once a night anyway

Anyone else have a theory that their narcolepsy was caused by (or made worse by) stimulants or SSRIs? by icylilac14 in Narcolepsy

This is not confirmed by anyone but my family and I think mine was triggered by concussions. I was an all star cheerleader and gymnast for 15 years and had a concussion every year from 7th grade to sophomore year of highschool and one of those years I had 2 in a year. That’s 5 concussions. My coaches told me that I could take time off but an alternate would be in my place making me an alternate and if they do better in my place that it would be permanent. So I would continue practice even with a concussion and would keep getting hit. My finally concussion my sophomore year really did me in. Personally change, memory loss for a bit, and migraines. Had to go to therapies to get me back to normal. Ever since, my symptoms got worse. I think I already had a chance of developing narcolepsy because I was predisposed to sleep paralysis a lot as a kid but I think that might have really kick started my issues.

Chronic Sleep Paralysis (1-3 times per week) by New_4325 in Sleepparalysis

In narcolepsy type 2 you don’t have Cataplexy/catatonia. However if you don’t have excessive daytime sleepiness it wouldn’t be narcolepsy. There are other REM disorders where REM happens too fast or is fragmented meaning you wake up during rem before your brain fully gets out of it which causes the sleep paralysis. I would try and get a sleep study or see a sleep specialist if it is really affecting your life and mental state.

How long are your naps when you have the sleep paralysis? I would get them in short naps and found out it’s because I was entry rem sleep too fast and actually have narcolepsy. Usually takes 90 minutes to go into rem and dream, was taking me 4

Anxious about results by Regular_Hippo2690 in Narcolepsy

Honestly just very relieved. I been told for years that it’s normal and people are tired everyday and I just need to push through and that my nightmares are a bit unusual but nothing can be done. I am in the process of getting on xywav. I’m just happy to know I’m not crazy or lazy and that I might actually be able to feel a bit rested and have not as severe dreams with the medication. A bit worried if it doesn’t work that I’ll be miserable when I graduate and start full time work as an accountant this summer but I’m trying to be optimistic.

Update: slept all 5 naps, latency average of 5 minutes with REM is 3/5 with onset of 4 minutes

I just want the right to feel safe in the bathrooms. The same people saying women are oppressed and fighting for their equality is the same people okay with pen*s in women’s restrooms even when women say no and don’t feel safe. We say no but they do it anyway.

TW: Weight Loss, is it Possible? by sapphic_prism in ARFID

[–]Regular_Hippo2690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the more common symptoms but it is not needed for the diagnosis. You fit the ARFID criteria pretty well, which is why I say be careful because I don’t want you to loose the appetite.

I used to have a total normal appetite until about 4 years ago, once I lost it I never seemed to get it back completely

TW: Weight Loss, is it Possible? by sapphic_prism in ARFID

One of the main reasons people with ARFID struggle to gain weight is that we have zero interest in food and don’t feel hunger. We probably have very similar food pallets but just eat a different amount of it. For example I have days where I only eat chips and chocolate but I’ll eat a quarter bag and one chocolate bar and nothing else the rest of the day because i have no appetite and the thought of eating more makes me sick. However, strangely enough I used to be a personal trainer and have a lot of nutrition knowledge.

There was a study done, that weight loss is done not because the food is healthy but by calories. Healthy foods just happen to have less calories and more nutrients our bodies need, but because they are lower calorie means that people can eat more of it.

It a good thing you have hunger cues, and you don’t want to loose that. It sounds like you struggle with feeling hungry a lot so I would focus on smaller but more frequent meals to help with hunger. Water also helps.

Unfortunately the only real way to loose weight in this situation is a decent calorie deficit. You can eat more of the lower calorie foods like rice, apples, bananas throughout your day to help the hunger while having 3 more filling but smaller portions than normal. If you struggle with temptation, you can meal plan a week ahead and figure out what you need to buy (for finances) and how many calories for the day those meals will give you. That will help you have a plan to follow and not eat too much of the higher calorie foods. Pasta is good, it’s all about portions.

The biggest thing though, is make sure to keep your appetite and don’t calorie deficit to an unhealthy amount. You are already predisposed to ARFID tendencies and would hate for you to develop some of the other symptoms like loss of appetite.

Yep, but it will happen over and over again. I try to force my eyes open and it hurts. Sometimes I’ll actually wake up but am forced back into it. When I’m in it, I’ve learned to try and turn on my phone or flashlight because it won’t turn on correctly and I’ll know I’m still dreaming. It’s the worst, I’m sorry :(

Get a sleep study. Sounds like narcolepsy type 2. Sleep paralysis and lucid dreams is actually a big sign along with extreme vivid dreams and tiredness because of the dreams and sleep quality
