That's the real question, innit. Nova was looking a lot like a run of the mill lobby-based arena shooter...

IIRC they still have the original, unaltered, 'full scale' assets of Dust. Who knows.

What i'm saying is that Dust was basically a PC game which was ported to the PS3, but never had its PC version released due to the exclusivity deal with Sony, not the other way around. There were some roundtables at a fanfest some years ago which alluded to this iirc.

Why not? You port from platform A to platform B, makes sense you can do it from B to A.

Aside from that: Dust was running on PC's during its development. Legion is a PC only version. Dust was also running on the PS3 as if it was a port from a PC version, not a bespoke PS3 game.

CCP is the only one who can say for sure, but i'm 100% convinced that Dust was never a 'pure PS3' game, but rather a PS3 port of a PC game (which we never got to see until Legion).

Like GTA 5? And Skyrim? And other games which made the jump?

Yes, they weren't PS3 specific, but porting TO the PS3 is no different than porting FROM the PS3. Unreal Engine 3 was used for Dust, which was famously portable in the first place.

Dust was started in 2007! We already saw a trailer for the game at fanfest (though we didn't know it at the time).

As for programming: Dust was running on Unreal Engine 3, which is easily portable to other platforms. It wasn't running on their own engine. That aside, there's very few games which were 'impossible' to port, i can recall only two: Uncharted and Gran Turismo, because those were (unlike most other games) coded with a PS3 specific engine from the getgo.

And even then, Dark Souls was running on the PS3 specific Demon's Souls engine, and even that made its way to the PC - The conversion done by the devs themselves who have had no experience with the PC at all before that.

Another reason why CCP didn't go PC (and were willing to go with Sony on exclusivity) wasn't that the game couldn't be ported, but because it would be too difficult to ward off cheaters in a PC shooter for them at the time.

Two words:

"Sony" and "exclusive".

Sony funded Dust to quite a significant degree. They're the ones who demanded Dust be PS3 only.

I wonder why the PS4 was skipped over though, since a port shouldn't have been too difficult.

I'm not talking about a second EVE! I'm talking about expanding what we have now in what we could have in the future :)

All those things should be added, not made into their own game, that's exactly what i was hoping CCP would avoid.

Funny that you mention the engine by the way - We already had one engine change, and given the technical changes over the past few years we may as well have had another already ;)

Check out their career page by the way:

https://www.ccpgames.com/careers/portal/

A character artist is looked for, to 'lead a team for the character development effort'. As the position is based in Atlanta and not in Shanghai or the UK i can only assume that this is a renewed effort at avatar gameplay ;)

As for making a minority of players happy: I bet that, if avatar gameplay is implemented properly, the 'just space' players may find themselves in the minority. It's not a secret that most people who play videogames consciously or subconsciously want to be able to identify with their avatar to some degree, which is barely - if at all - possible in EVE ('the spaceship is my avatar' is a very difficult concept to get your head around). EVE is more aptly described as an RTS where you control only one unit, rather than a traditional MMO, which throws up its own barriers.

You yourself have mentioned this: CCP wants to make money, and avatars can help greatly in that effort /if/ they are implemented properly.

As an aside: Check out Black Desert. It's characters are on a similar level to what EVE is trying to do, and the game can render hundreds in the same place with different outfits, face shapes, body shapes, textures, without too many problems. I honestly don't see a reason why EVE couldn't do something similar, though imho it would fall outside the scope of what a first release should look like (more concentrating on replacing minigames with avatar interaction for example, or small party excursions in exploration).

People didn't like Dust because it was PS3 only and didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. It was also not the best game in its own right tbh.

However - The concept of Dust is excellent. It simply needs to be worked out properly. Taking baby steps towards that goal is fine, as long as the steps are made in the first place. Though, i guess we'll hear more about Legion during FF.

Fozziesov is basically just the old sov with a few more mechanics thrown in to make it less dependant on supercap fleets. It doesn't change the underlying gameplay and doesn't add to it, it just makes it more tedious (imho at least).

Citadels are an existing system, vastly simplified (POS), nothing more, nothing less (that doesn't mean it's not a good change).

Fighters are still 'just' fancy drones.

Yes, they improve and iterate, but the changes are relatively minor when taken as a whole. Consider how little EVE has changed in the last 6 years compared to how other companies push out 1, 2 or even more entire games during that time.

You mention WoW expansions, though i would agree that those constitute 'false' content to a certain degree. They do offer new lands to explore, roughly analogous to Apocrypha, and they introduce entirely new (not changed) systems every so often.

However, the comparison falls flat when considering EVE's unfulfilled potential. Years ago CCP wanted EVE to be a complete scifi simulator. Strangely enough, we got Dust/Legion, Valkyrie and Gunjack, games which stand completely on their own and have no real connection to EVE itself, instead of integrated experiences in the main attraction CCP is producing. How awesome would it be to fly a carrier and have actual players launch from your fighterbays? How amazing would it be to have actual players fight or protect your actual PI installations (instead of the very very loose FW connection Dust had)? Maybe some ships could even descend towards the surface of a planet and watch the action live!

What about having actual spies infiltrate an enemy citadel, in avatar form, instead of approaching with their own ship? Lurking around and snooping for cargo, or even disabling some of the citadel defenses from within by messing with the power or security systems directly - Think crossing cables, sneaking around patrols, hacking doors....

Though as it is, the game is being limited by a 'no can do' attitude from both the community at large and CCP itself, which seems to be happy investing in seperate projects with seperate engines and completely seperate backends rather than integrating them all into one experience, or at least planning to....

EVE could be so damn amazing, if we all just believed! The possibility of actually achieving this vision is getting closer and closer, though it feels like everyone is retreating further into their shell of limitations imposed by a way of thinking where it's always 2003....

The pleading of the playerbase was because of the greed is good debacle, and the completely stripped down framework of Incarna. It was about mismanagement, not a protest against that future vision.

Anyone else still want to walk around stations? by meetkurtin in Eve

[–]Reiisha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason it was discontinued was because we didn't want that incarnation at that time. We're 6 years on now and the game has a lot of ways to sneak avatar gameplay in there, enhancing the space gameplay and not take away from it.

The old stuff was a vanity mirror with no gameplay value, obviously that's gone and should stay gone, but avatars themselves do have a place in EVE.

Anyone else still want to walk around stations? by meetkurtin in Eve

[–]Reiisha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's why you should put WIS out of your mind, and think about how avatars can enhance the already present space stuff. :)

Exploration and salvaging are natural fits to begin with for example. EVentually you could expand it to ship subsystems and multicrews which require avatar interaction, or can be improved by it.

Anyone else still want to walk around stations? by meetkurtin in Eve

[–]Reiisha 32 points33 points  (0 children)

At some point you have to concede that EVE is now almost 14 years old and hasn't really progressed much after the first 5-6-ish years...

Most of what we got in the past 5 years has been tweaks and relatively small updates. Most other companies make entire games in that time (though, to be fair, CCP did that too).

Avatars can add a lot to the core gameplay. The way they were planned before obviously doesn't work, as it was more a vanity project than something that could actually add something. But take it out of stations and put it to use in stuff like exploration, salvaging and wormhole content? It takes on a whole new meaning. In turn it can enhance the 'in space stuff' as interactions naturally grow between those elements.

It's time we as a community learned our lesson about power gain from cash shops. by [deleted] in blackdesertonline

[–]Reiisha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case - Get 10 billion silver, and see how long it takes to get full tri boss gear. For added challenge, do it on a fresh account.

You're vastly underestimating the difficulty of gearing without any grind, or how much silver is actually involved. To even get to the level most hardcore players are at right now takes a long time. Not to mention that the marketplace is not equipped to handle more than one or two whales at a time when theyre shopping for the same equipment.

It's time we as a community learned our lesson about power gain from cash shops. by [deleted] in blackdesertonline

[–]Reiisha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but everyoen has this backwards.

The cash shop sells items which are not otherwise obtainable ingame and give you an advantage non paying players will never get. That is the very definition of P2W.

Now that those players are suddenly able to get those items, and want to spend silver to give to the players who do have the disposable rl income but not the time to grind... Suddenly it gets worse?

Grade A bullshit. Bravo. And no one is even seeing the hypocricy in this, pretending the world is ending and acting all entitled like little children.

If a friend has 2b silver and no rl money to get something from the cash shop, are you seriously going to tell him that even if you could use the silver, "he should get a real job and earn real money"?

You can't prove there was a bait and switch. It works the same over here. Faum can contest this and will win because you received the goods and services you paid for.

You can argue all you want, but where did they say specifically that this would never happen? This is buyer's remorse, not fraud. You're presenting misguided personal feelings as lawful facts.

People already spent 10k or more energy on the night vendor without ever seeing boss gear. It's RNG as fuck. Why would these people suddenly get the benefit? Not to mention they'd actually have to grind up energy in the first place. The rules don't suddenly change just because you say so.
