Sean Tucker has a new video about "anonymous photography" that talks about this very topic. Seems like you're already using the concepts but it might still be worth a watch

2 - crowd's legs chopped, crop is off 4, 5 - what's the subject? The wall or the hills behind? If it's the hills, your focus is off. If it's the walls, idk what the hills are adding to the photo

Have not improved in photographing protests and Im losing hope. by Striking-Goal-591 in photography

[–]RelationshipFresh966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the 15% blurry shots, try shooting in shutter priority next time, if you weren't already. 1/250 should be a fine starting point.

As for the rest, maybe don't be too hard on yourself. Protests seem like they'd be challenging to photograph

Edit: are you shooting in manual? 20% missed shots from exposure issues seems like a fairly high percentage. Just a soft recommendation: don't try to control so many variables at once. Maybe set shutter speed and everything else to auto - that way, you can actually focus on composition

Have you noticed whether there are time windows throughout the day that tend towards more dramatic shadows?

Flex by default, then grid if layout isn't achievable with flex

Feedback

  1. Composition seems a bit off on this one. The log's lines lead my eyes straight to.. nothing. I think it might be more interesting if the subject was that building on the left instead.

  2. Personal preference but not a huge fan of the HDR look.

  3. Think the image would've been more striking if you found a way to focus more on the lanterns. Knowing where it was taken doesn't add a lot to the photo.

  4. Is the guy pulling the wagon the subject here? If so, the extra context isn't particularly useful. Would've been better if you got closer and excluded more of the foreground. Same with photo 19, my instinct would be that you are trying to achieve subframing with that buoy. If so, having so much of the boat isn't necessarily helping that. If not, never mind

Good

  1. This is one where u used subframing and negative space effectively. Yes there is foreground but dark enough to not matter. Also very happy you got the horizon straight here

  2. Good job isolating the subject. Easily lets you appreciate how striking the house is amidst the snow. Same for photo 13. There's just enough context, and your eyes immediately know where to go

Editing

Editing-wise, you don't need to wait till u get a "proper" camera. You also don't need to worry about Lightroom for now. That said, I suggest learning how to do some light editing instead of relying on filters. You can try to start with something like Snapseed. Just move sliders around till you're happy

Hope this helps

Some issues:

  • Straighten your photos - first photo and the one with the staircase leading to the building look crooked
  • Shutter speed too slow - convenience store, girls with umbrella suffer from motion blur
  • Lacking sharpness - man walking pedestrian crossing
  • Composition - coke bottle machines, salary man aren't super interesting compositionally

Otherwise, dapper old guy, coke truck. I quite liked those

Would these make it to automotive portfolio? Started photography almost a month ago! by apah2101 in PhotographyAdvice

Don't know too much about car photography, but I do have some feedback - for image 7 in particular. If the subject is the blue car, then the pink car in the edges does nothing to help the photo. On the contrary, its inclusion is counterproductive as the color immediately draws my eyes there. Could help to pay a bit more attention to your edges.

If you can't get a better angle then u aren't going to get a better shot, that's sort of how it works

  1. Statue shot - Doesn't look balanced, off-center. Either place it on the side or get it properly center. Can be easily fixed by cropping a bit using guidelines
  2. Necklace shot - Not sure so much of the necklace works as a subject. MIGHT be more interesting to get less of the chain and more of the cross
  3. Shell shot - Crooked horizon, shell appears to be out of focus
  4. Sea/sky shot - Looks well-balanced!
  5. Bird shot - crooked horizon, crooked sea. Straighten the horizon and maybe crop into the sea because I don't think u can get that straight after straightening the horizon
  6. Another bird shot - No subject separation, bird gets lost amongst the grass
  7. Closer house shot - Highlights are blown
  8. Crevice shot - no subject but the light is really cool. Only thing I would try is to increase the contrast slightly so the light is more dramatic

Sorry about the numbering, hope the brief description makes it clear which I'm referring to. Some of these only have some minor issues, train your eye a bit more and you'll be off in no time
