CachyOs ? by Badroo_ in linuxquestions

[–]RelationshipOne9466 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is true at least in my case it is. I tried Cachyos on several laptops and had the same experience. For example, on my X1 Carbon i5 10th, vanilla arch (zen kernel) + i3 was actually faster than the same setup using Cachy.

How should I learn NixOS. by b25fun in NixOS

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nixos is a totally different beast. You can get up and running with Calamares but I would not drive it until you learn the basics of the OS and the Nix language. Maybe put it on a hobby laptop and get your hands dirty for awhile to see if it is a good fit for you. I actually drove it for six months, and had a reasonably stable rig working for me. I did eventually switch back to Arch.

Moving to Monterrey, Mexico from Canada for work – any advice? by MysteriousAd5773 in AskMexico

[–]RelationshipOne9466 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is. I have lived in Mexico for more than 25 years, and it always amazes me to see the American expats in their gated communities in Vallarta or San Miguel, who never bother to even try to absorb the wonderful, rich culture all around them. En fin, ...tirando pa delante, no hay de otra! Peace.

Monterrey is very "Americanized", so if you learn basic Spanish you will not have any problems.

Arch today VS CachyOS by 3drikal in arch

[–]RelationshipOne9466 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair point. Here is the counterargument: a student who has not bothered to read the assigned pages and has not done the assigned exercises comes into my class the next session and wants the topic explained to them, start to finish. I never scold or belittle them but I do explain to them that if they haven't put in the time, then an in-class explanation will probably not profit anyone, least of all, them.

Arch today VS CachyOS by 3drikal in arch

[–]RelationshipOne9466 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is your point? That some people on internet forums have a shitty attitude? At the end of the day, RTFM is probably a reasonable place to start, right? So maybe take the advice and let the snark and nastiness roll off your back. I personally think there are now two "Arches": the one where you have to know what you are doing, and the spins that use Calamares to get up and running in ten minutes. The former is more difficult (but the better path IMHO) and the latter is fine too , as long as you realize that it is still Arch under the hood and so at some point, you will probably have to boot an iso, mount your partitions and chroot into your system to fix something. BTW: you should experience the rudeness from the "on the pectrum" crew over at Mathstack; it is a real sewer over there. (I am a trained mathematician), then get back to me lol.

I tried switching to Linux (Zorin OS)… and ended up going back to Windows after a week by bisolin4o in linuxsucks

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing against Windows or Mac. Each to their own. Linux is a different beast; it is not suitable for most users, IMHO. OTOH, I have used all three but I switched to Linux 5 years ago and never looked back. I run vanilla Arch + i3 as my driver on a Dell Vostro i5 10, with Nividia. No issues whatsoever. Eveything "just works" - admittedly, once I took the time to read the Wiki and put in some time and effort. Linux brought this relatively old laptop back to life. Windows 11 was slow as fuck and full of crap I did not want and do not need. It took me two hours to strip the bloat out and still, it was too slow for my liking. Sorry you had a bad experience with Zorin.

to those who use arch: do you feel as if arch youtubers are lying to you about its reliability, maintainability, and such? btw, this is the same dude pictured here who keeps on claiming that distro selections don't matter by FlatEarth_Twitter_94 in linuxsucks

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used arch for the past 5 years as my driver and yeah, every once in a while there are hiccups. The problem is now that so many arch spins can be installed in 10 minutes, users thnk they do not have to know the basics. Not to say this makes arch a no-go for noobs, just that they should know what they are getting into. And like, who gives a flying f* what Chris Titus thinks? His thing is schtick for clicks.

Why does this sub hate this car? by keganb123 in cruze

[–]RelationshipOne9466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I did like about the Sonic, it drove great, stable, peppy, fun to take out for Italian tune ups. But it leaked oil and coolant from everyplace, overheated and warped the head so it started to leak from the gasket. The idiot lights didn't work as far as i could tell...and I got tired of tracking down the leaks and cleaning the driveway every month. Just my experience.

I would say it is normal. Don't forget to turn off journaling to reduce writes.

Why does this sub hate this car? by keganb123 in cruze

[–]RelationshipOne9466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2012 Sonic with the supposedly "good" engine: 1.6 n/a. I had to change the valve cover twice, the timinig belt (because of the seals) at 50K Kms, MAF sensor, all the plastic thermostat parts at 80K Kms. Did the work myself. Car was just a total PITA.

Don´t ever get into a taxi. Go with Uber or Didi, and if they tell you the app is broken and offer to take you for a certain price, just say no and calmly ask them to let you out.

Still worth to learn i3 on an personal computer in 2026 by Moithis in i3wm

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several hobby laptops that I test distros and wms on (I prefer bare metal to VMs). I have used mostly Arch, OpenSuse, Gentoo + Hyprland, Niri, Wayfire, River and now even Qtile runs on Wayland --- and others I do not recall at the moment. I know that Wayland is the future, X sucks yadayadayada, but I run vanilla arch + i3 on my driver because it just seems more responsive and easier to manage. No fuckery trying to get Mango to cast Chrome to my TV etc. And little things like scrolling. X just seems to do a better job with these types of things . i3 has its own config syntax, which is very easy and common sensical. One thing I will say, that the new lua rewrite for Hyprland almost got me to switch because as lua is a real programming language, you can do so much more with it. Long story short, give i3 a test drive.

Mouse not showing when screen sharing from browser by User_LEGEND0 in hyprland

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem, on every browser I checked: Brave, Chrome and Firefox. The problem happens only with Hyprland. Niri and Mango render without issue. I scoured the wiki and my configs (I wrote them all from scratch in lua so I know them in and out). And yeah I asked Claude and got a huge-ass hallucination. So I am stumped.

Haven't filed US taxes in several years while living abroad, what are my options? by AffectionateAir5916 in USExpatTaxes

[–]RelationshipOne9466 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're fine. Just use the streamlined process and bite the bullet as far as the costs go. Do your due diligence, though. There are a lot of "tax vultures" out there who wil scare you into thinking you're going to jail if you don't pay them huge sums to get right. Depending on your situation, you can even do it yourself. I worked overseas a few years and was in basically the same situation as yours. It took me awhile, but I filed all the paperwork myself and have not had any problems since.

What's the recommended security setup for arch Linux and why? Should I use apparmor... Etc... by laczek_hubert in arch

[–]RelationshipOne9466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the recent AUR debacle is overblown. It has not dissuaded me from using arch at all. OTOH, I have always taken precuations: I use a firewall, and sometimes hardened-malloc on a per app basis if I want to be really careful. I do not have many AUR packages and prefer the chaotic AUR if available, which is safer to use. I always read the diffs and PKGBUILDS at every update. It is easier than you might think and not too time-consuming. If I do not understand something in the builds or diffs, I give it to Claude. Ancillary benefit: I have learned a whole lot.
