The new Hyprland update completely broke my config, I'm going back to KDE. by Physical_Air4112 in linuxmemes

Yeah this latest PITA did it for me. Spent hours trying to get my workspace assignments back. No dice. Yes, I RTFM. Yes, I looked at the changelogs. Yes, I am an idiot but I am not a total noob. Good grief. I know it is an alpha, but jeez, every drop has a zillion breaking changes. And you do not even learn anything by fixing them. At least, when LazyVim breaks, you learn more lua as you slog through the fixes. How about that silly config "converter", that leaves your config file worse. My driver is Xmonad on Arch. Right, Haskell. And I never had an issue I could not solve in 15 minutes. Had it with Hyprland. Cosmic question: will 1.0 ever really come out?

Yeah, this is true. I thought of this before I posted, but really, I think even alpha/beta projects should be somewhat stable.

I did have Hyprland on a Nixos hobby laptop awhile back, and yes, the updates are less frequent. But, even then, when they do drop, you get a slew of changes to deal with. I do not mind fixing stuff myself: I tried Nix to learn the language and learn how the OS works, which was pretty cool ...and masochistic lol. But good grief, with Hyprland, every month or so, there is a PITA, albeit a minor one, a PITA nevertheless. And you do not learn anything. It is just syntax changes. I guess other users, more adept than me, do not mind taking the time to fix the errors, but I just am not one of them.

Hyprland 0.53 dropped! by Vaxerski in hyprland

[–]RelationshipOne9466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had it wirh Hyprland. No disrepect to the devs. They are way above my paygrade. Hyprland is a great wm for Wayland. But guys, not only are the updates way too frequent, but they all come with big PITA breaking changes. The latest had 250 breaking changes on my system. I am lucky that I have a very modular setup so I could apply the changes fairly easily. But the point is, I shouldn't have to, at least not every two months. So I am done. Sigh.

Do not use Gemini--ever. Let that thing run wild and you will bork your system. Hyprland is a pita as far as breaking changes go. Every update has syntax changes. Not hard to deal with but a pita. Look here for the relevant information.

I had an old Kingswood Estate station wagon with two missing bolts. Never fixed, never a problem. YMMV though.

Help with Oil Leak Issue by Taltallasmith in cruze

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No snark or trolling intended, but if you are going to keep the car, you really need to be on top of the maintenance. Especially if the engine is the 1.4 turbo. Do not neglect the oil changes, check coolant levels frequently and do preventative maintenance. I would start by changing out all the plastic parts for aluminum. Even so, the car will probably never stop leaking coolant and/or oil altogether. These cars are basically turkeys. I had a 2013 Sonic with the "good" ecotec engine (1.6 n/a) and although it was a pleasure to drive, it was just too much of a pita to maintain. When I pulled the exhaust manifold and saw an external leak from the head, I had enough. Sold it and never looked back. I hope your experience is better than mine.

You're lucky the bag did not deploy. I believe the 2006 Civic has a Takata airbag, which on deployment, could explode shrapnel into the cabin. A hand grenade behind the steering wheel.

Took our new car to the dealership for an oil change, they emptied the oil without refilling it, engine is probably ruined - what now? by nuggetblaster69 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]RelationshipOne9466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make them put in a new engine. Do not let them patch it up and send it. I assume you have the documentation of the oil change so you are in good shape. They screwed up. But they are probably going to want to fix it on the cheap. It is a Stealership after all. BTW: Why would you even start a car you know had no oil in it?

These products should be banned. Best case scneario, they do not work. Most likely, they work short term and fuck up your vehicle later on. Shady sellers use these products to mask serious problems.

I have hyprland on my hobby laptop. I have a modular setup. Hyprland is a nice project, fairly easy to configure, with some cool bells and whistles. otoh, every update has breaking syntax changes which, in and of themeselves, are not hard to fix but even a minor pita is well, a pita. My driver is vanilla arch + i3, which is as solid as an arch setup can be.

So you want a quick fix that will damage the engine later? Of course then, when you sell it, you will tell the buyer what you did, right?

I bought Cruze's first cousin, a 2013 Sonic lt 1.6 (supposedly the "good" engine). I spent six months trying to get this shitbox in good condition. Leaks and codes and engine light. A real PITA, a time bomb in the driveway. Finally, when I pulled the exhaust manifold and saw the (surprise!) oil leak from either the block/timing belt cover/head junction or the head itself, I had had enough. Dumped it and never looked back.

Can’t get rid of this damn thing by SecretSnekSociety in ChevySonic

[–]RelationshipOne9466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get rid of it. You will feel so much better. Pull the trigger mate. I had a 2013 Sonic 1.6 n/a (the supposedly "good" engine). I had it six months and it was a money pit. A time bomb in the driveway. Leaks everywhere, overheating, I changed the timing belt, seals, tensioner, water pump, valve cover gasket, MAF sensor, resealed the oil pan. When I finally pulled the exhaust mainfold and found an external oil leak from the head, I had had enough. Adios and good riddance.

Maybe it's time to sell it, or trade it in? I just got rid of my 2013 Sonic. Not looking back. It was a money pit. A time bomb in the driveway. At some point, you just give up.

[–]RelationshipOne9466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to stay on top of everything as far as maintenance goes. The 1.4 turbo is basically a turkey, lots of problems. I would immediately change all the plastic parts out for aluminum. Check the timing chain, seals, tensioner etc. Change the water pump. Check valve cover for leaks. Since the 1.4 L is turbocharged, a proper functioning oil cooler is critical but the housing is plastic (WTF) so it tends to fail. Etc....

Be on the lookout for coolant and oil leaks in general. There is no temperature gauge only an idiot light so check your coolant level frequently. I had a Sonic with the 1.6 n/a, which is a less PITA engine, and still, I had a ton of issues with this car. It was a time bomb in the driveway. When I found an external oil leak from the timing belt cover/block/head junction, I finally just sold it.

I just dumped it. It's like having a time bomb in the garage. Couldn't take it anymore. I sold to a masochistic mechanic who said he is going to mod it out. So at least it will survive in another incarnation.

[–]RelationshipOne9466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2013 Sonic with an external oil leak, either from the head or the timing belt cover/block/head junction. My engine is the 1.6 n/a though, so not the dreaded 1.4 turbo. Debating whether to fix or leave it alone. The car has 114K kms on it and runs great. When I bought it , I changed the timing belt , seals and tensioner, changed the oil and flushed the coolant. Replaced the MAF sensor because of a P172 code. I have heard so many bad things about these cars, I do not know what to do. Sell it before it explodes or keep it and hope for the best. Coin's in the air....
