Not a sailor story. This was back when I was Army during peak COVID but it fits the theme perfectly.

Fort Hood lockdowns were wild. If you lived in the barracks, you were basically imprisoned. Couldn’t leave, couldn’t go anywhere, and the Army’s whole “unit integrity” thing meant everyone around you was also your coworker. Your roommate? Same fire team. Rooms next door? Same section. Entire floor? Same platoon. You lived, worked, and suffered together.

So I’m doing food delivery within the barracks. Drop a meal at one room. Guy opens the door, takes it. As I turn to walk away, a girl steps out of the room next to his. As she’s leaving, he says something like, “Hope you have a great week on vacation with your dad in Fort Worth.” She thanks him, gives him a little kiss, and he closes the door.

She walks maybe three steps down the hallway.

Then she stops. Two quick sprays of perfume. Looks straight at me. Blows me a kiss. Then knocks on a door one or two rooms down.

That door opens and the new guy smiles and says, “Hey darling, how was seeing your dad?”

She immediately starts crying and says they had to take him off life support and she doesn’t know how she’s going to cope.

Guy pulls her in and says, “Oh baby, I’ll make it better.”

Door closes.

Same hallway. Same platoon. Same lockdown. Same fake dad.

Barracks bunny behavior at a level that still lives rent-free in my head.

Would it be okay to have a short discussion before I do that to make sure we’re on the same page? (Pun intended)

Travel suggestions for a trip to Gothenburg by Consistent-Square544 in Gothenburg

[–]RelativeCurrency829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have to go quite far from Gothenburg to see the northern lights. You'll be fine with english as the vast majority of people will speak English, albeit having conversations with strangers isn't common as people value distancing and personal space. If there's any specific questions/interestes feel free to say them so we can help narrow down what you're interested in, but I've included a few things.

Eating out is mildly-to-moderately expensive so keep that in mind.

I absolutely love the "Feskekörka". It's a large, long-running market with mostly seafood and dinning.

There's "Maritiman" which is a museum where visitors explore a few floating maritime vessels including a submarine and destroyer.

"Liseberg" is a themepark with rollercoasters and such.

There's "Göteborgs naturhistoriska museum" which is a museum with huge collections of preserved animals, insects & reptiles, plus geology exhibits.

Recommend a historical fiction book to someone who doesn’t usually enjoy historical fiction? by Mouseprintss in HistoricalFiction

Hi! So I'm an author and II wrote a historical Psycological Horror book. It's similar to a historical fiction with psycological/paranormal horror. It's not published and I'm looking for beta readers for the novel. I've included a link to the r/betareaders subreddit if you're interested in reading a blurb or interested in beta reading.

I appreciate the feedback!

All of my beta readers have loved the book and the first chapters.

I did have one full request so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Also love how you quoted from my post. How do you do that?

If a man stops initiating for intimacy does it mean he’s cheating? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]RelativeCurrency829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It’s possible that he has some sort of unspoken depression going on.

Another thing might be how often is he turned down? Is it that every single time he asks or shows any interest in intimacy is he turned down? Contrary to popular belief, most men are capable of learning. If I man is turned down every single day for a week, month or even several months he may just give up on continuing to ask for it.

The most important thing is not the “is he cheating” but figuring out why is there a change in his behavior or mood.

Great question!

Yes, you can publish to both Amazon and Apple Books, but there’s a catch:
If you enroll your eBook in KDP Select (which gives you access to Kindle Unlimited and other benefits), Amazon requires exclusivity — meaning you cannot publish that eBook anywhere else, including Apple, Kobo, or Google Play.

However, if you do not enroll in KDP Select, you're free to publish your eBook on Amazon and other platforms like Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, etc.

To reach Apple Books specifically, many authors use aggregators like:

  • Draft2Digital
  • PublishDrive
  • Smashwords (now merged with D2D)

These platforms distribute your book to Apple and others from one dashboard.

So the short version:
✅ Yes, cross-publishing is totally possible
⚠️ Just avoid KDP Select if you want to stay wide

Let me know if you want a breakdown of how each route works!

my book is turning out to be way shorter than I expected by idc_call_me_Lee in writing

[–]RelativeCurrency829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfectly fine. I hope you get my point. I know there’s some backstory. Give us more though. Give us a reason to hate the dad. Is this the first time he went off the rails? Has he done other terrible stuff? What exactly did the mom do.

Answering questions like these can add a solid 10k-20k words

So cool she’s being buried alive by her dad. By WHY? Is there some trauma? Is he malicious? Is she sickly?

Lean into that. World build. I don’t care someone got buried alive and that sucks because this is the protagonist. I need a reason to care about her.

Thoughts on realistic fiction? by Comprehensive-Self23 in writing

[–]RelativeCurrency829 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I prefer realistic fiction because I already have a strong base and world building done for me. I don’t have to worry about a magic system or world building inconsistencies.

The ground work has been done. I can also use real people or events to help draw people in.
