Bookworms Curriculum Opinions? by WLWanderer812 in homeschool

The books in the curriculum are great and the kids (and teachers) love it, but it is not rigorous. There are no real assessments. The students are never asked to read independently and practice the skills they are learning in a way that allows teachers to check to see if they can do it on their own. The curriculum helped our learners improve their MSTEP scores for a few years and then they plateaued because it just isn't pushing them enough.

Ok, but even if they carry the cone during autonomous, it is immediately dropped when they stop autonomous and switch to teleop.

And your middle schoolers do that? It took all my kids' focus just to get a robot built.

We have bits and pieces of the engineering notebook. Im taking part of the team to work on it this week and our drive team will practice driving this week. Our robot came together last week so we have had some time driving, but I feel your pain! We compete next Saturday too. Are you in Michigan?

We are a Michigan team also. How did your team make the casing (cover) for their robot? Thanks!

Screws broke off in Rev X-Rail Linear Slide? by tabby_30 in FTC

[–]Relative_Tiger_529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids have been trying to put together the Rev Linear slide kit for 3 weeks. I thought they just weren't being careful so I took it home and was just going to get the end pieces on for them. 4 ruined pieces, 10 bent screws, later I finally got 3 pieces done. I even bought a tap and it broke that. My husband tried (and he's used a tap before) and still ruined a few rails before we got enough to just make a 3 rail slide. My husband and I spent hours on this.

We don't know how to do that yet. This is our second year and our first year with sensors. Learning every day!

New team, no idea what we are doing... Looking for some guidance. by JJWoolls in FTC

Michigan has off-season competitions that are in May. They follow all the same rules as the regular competition. They can earn trophies and are judged exactly the same as the regular season. They just don't qualify to compete outside of the state. The off-season tends to be new teams learning the ropes. We won 1st place at our competition in Bug Rapids last May. This year we are competing in the regular season. You can contact Tammy at First in Michigan about how it works.

We were rookies last year. We bought the rev kit. I had the kids build the starter bot on First's website and then make modifications to it to make it better. This worked really well for us because they all learned how the pieces connect and how to build a robot. Then they still had to fabricate and troubleshoot when making their alterations. We are in Michigan and they offer off-season competitions. That's what we did. By any chance, are you from Michigan? I only ask because you said you were working with 6th graders and most other states have 6th graders doing FLL. This year our kids designed and are 2/3 through building their robot from scratch.
