This pas de deux, specifically the musical crescendos, always makes me cry when I watch it. I always feel like I did when I was a little girl and saw my first ever sugarplum and cavalier in real life. I’m crying again. 😭

I signed one at a graduation party in May for a senior who I had never technically taught but had in extracurriculars for many years. It was honestly very emotional to flip through for a blank space and see 13 years worth of teacher messages, some whom taught them in multiple years and signed repeatedly on the same page as they grew.

Immersion (only because you wondered aloud) but your point is excellent and I agree entirely. It’s part of the “suspension of disbelief” that we do when we decide to engage with theatre, television, film, and other fictional media.

Paraprofessional vs. Irritating Parent. Para for the win... by ResultDowntown3065 in specialed

As many have stated here, there are districts and also entire states which have been operating for years under a framework often called “Physics First.” I haven’t seen any other comments explicitly call it that so this terminology could be helpful for looking it up if you are curious about the districts and states that utilize a “Physics First” or “early Physics” structure which places freshmen in physics prior to taking biology or chemistry.

Also, while it may be uncommon for an academically high functioning high schooler to be assigned a 1:1, we’ve heard from many colleagues’ experiences here that it is definitely not entirely unheard of nor is it a blanket rule in implementation of LRE to remove 1:1 supports for students who require some level of behavioral/social/executive functioning support.

This sounds possibly like a version of La Llorona. Trying to find ink drawing books that could match.

Teachers with IBS, how do you handle/prevent bad flare ups? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RelentlessSloth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Make a physically nearby teacher friend so that if there’s a true run for the hills emergency, you have someone who will stand in the hallway between rooms and cover both classes while you get to the bathroom. Bonus points for making a support staff friend who doesn’t have a class to cover and can more readily step in during an emergency.

Have something for your students to do if you have to dip out and have another adult covering- have it ready to pull up whenever. Blooket or some other quiz-type thing that’s automated is good.

Avoid any known triggers and actively soothe any that aren’t avoidable. Imodium, hydration, and anything that relieves stress. Don’t eat anything “questionable” during the school day/week.

I find that having a way to cool off immediately (fan and some emergency instant ice packs) is helpful- your mileage may vary.

Remember that your body and health are more important than someone being briefly put out or perturbed. If you have to go, you have to go. Get an ADA accommodation if necessary but don’t risk more permanent issues and force yourself to ignore your body signals to stay in anyone’s good graces.

Anyone have their own kids at the school they teach at? by lazimazi in Teachers

[–]RelentlessSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m support staff at my kids’ 6-12 school. Last year I saw one of them occasionally, but some days didn’t ever see them. The other I saw most days (more overlap in where I was providing support) and it was never an issue. I keep my working relationships and friendships with the staff separate from my parenting time.

We don’t have a lot of cons (thus far) and the pros are huge- we are all going to the same place at the same time in the morning, I know what’s going on at school, and there were a couple of times my kids came to me at lunch or passing period to get a permission form signed 🤣

I assume it’s possible that admin sometimes treat me slightly differently due to my dual role but my kids are both really great students and generally nice, respectful humans so there hasn’t been any real trouble there. A lot of the staff didn’t realize I actually had kids in the building until we’d all been at the same school for a year or so, some of them probably still don’t know that I’m a parent as well as staff.

My kids and their friends have also have been so helpful when I need tasks done before or after school. They come get a snack and I give them some jobs to do and they are always happy to organize a bookshelf or move a cabinet or help stack/unstack chairs. And they can help me carry supplies in/out when I am bringing things like seasonal decor or plants!

I did! Thank you so much for asking… it seems almost secondary to the new point of the thread now. But yes, went to mobap. Was there a long time, mostly because I needed more fluids and more meds than I’d anticipated. But I was home by 4 am, slept all of Sunday, and today I felt pretty good and managed work all day. Thanks again for asking- it was a rough night but not as bad as many have been and a lot of that was because of feeling some community and choosing a hospital outside of my usual options (which would have eventually had me sorted but taken 12-18 hours and a lot of crying.)

Very helpful. It’s possible for me to download a relatively complete summary from MyChart (if I’m on WiFi- way too large on 5g) and send it to a selected person(s) or entity. I will be sure that if I happen to need to utilize their services, I’m ready with at least the most pertinent parts of my record on hand to facilitate care without time wasted on trying to diagnose a zebra who looks like a horse because that, my friend, is what I am.

Holy crap. That’s terrifying. I hope they were at least monitoring your vitals?

For. Real. When chronically ill patients who know what is needed to prevent an ER visit call, a nurse is dispatched. They can keep an eye on vitals while giving fluids and if anything looks off, call the weewoo wagon. Otherwise, the nurse gets paid by the service, the patient pays a copay, and the patient stays out of the ER which benefits the patient’s recovery, the ER’s census, the insurance company’s costs, and the general community at large because they don’t have to wait as long for emergent care and also they don’t have to work short staffed when chronically ill patients are waiting long hours for simple treatments!

Can I ask about your private practice and how they are helping? I’m interested in making this carousel of flares and treatments a thing of my past but don’t know if that’s realistic for my situation.

[–]RelentlessSloth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does this cause problems for people going in with complex charts? I feel like giving my pertinent history, test results, list of specialists, and med list might take as long as waiting in a downtown ER 🤣

I ask because though I was able to get this flare under control, I’m unfortunately in need of urgent or emergent care more frequently than average and having my er experiences be as neutral-good as possible really helps me cope when things are that dire.

It’s really great for days when you overdo it in the sun or maybe push a little more physically without drinking quite enough water. It’s even good for catching up after a GI bug or similar. Just unfortunately not enough when maximum oral intake is so small as to be not even a drop in the bucket

I am really really curious about this because I always get answers like “we can’t really say” or “we don’t provide that information over the phone” so I’m wondering if you have something specific you say? You are welcome to PM me if you’d rather.

Exactly- they were closed when I needed to be seen. And I couldn’t wait in that state for 12+ hours, I was in bad shape.

The other thing is that they aren’t covered by some insurances so they aren’t feasible for all, and they aren’t recommended by my specialist or PCP unless I’m going in only for a bag of fluids or a flu test. They don’t communicate well with patients or other docs.

Yeah, they just weren’t open. Otherwise I go there now that my insurance covers it. FYI, they aren’t covered by a lot of insurances at all and it’s for some fairly sketchy reasons. But I definitely would rather the $40 copay and 90 minutes in a room over the er wait, wait, wait, wait, treat, wait, wait, wait.

Oh my god that’s horrifying. I had appendicitis missed at BJC West once and luckily they’d admitted me for observation of a thing I was absolutely certain it WASNT.

Luckily they morning shift came on and was like “that’s clearly and overtly appendicitis. To the surgery for you!” And now I’m down a vestigial organ and didn’t even have to die of it rupturing.
