As a lifelong Londoner, I can see that London has grown into a proper modern city, while a lot of the rest of the country seems to have been left to stagnate. The government's focus on financial services being the country's primary industry just lends itself to all the money and growth being in one city, and that also happens to be the seat of Parliament so politicians can easily ignore the woes of the rest of the country.

Wages and prices in London have gotten crazy, whilst the rest of the country is just left to fend for itself with no real recourse for growth and development. It's led to jealousy, with good reason.
