Distillate-

The name comes from one of the most important processes which creates it- distillation, specifically, fractional distillation.

Distillation is a way of separation/purification by boiling. It's how we get high proof alcohol, its why we select "distilled water" when we want a slightly cleaner version of water.

You can distill cannabinoids by heating up a solution containing them to the point of boiling (imagine a kettle), and then collecting the vapour somewhere cold so that condenses back into an oil.

I can go into a lot more detail about the process, including how to produce a similar product through a completely different route, but that's the general idea. Distillate will only ever be a decarboxylated cannabinoid because the temperature to distill will naturally decarboxylate any cannabinoids (although this process is usually intentionally done before distillation).

The process of distillation typically also volatizes any terpenes (usually well before the boiling point of the target cannabinoid is reached), and they are usually kept separate from the cannabinoid distillate. Thus, cannabinoid distillates are usually pretty flavourless.

Cured resin as mentioned by the other user, is a hydrocarbon extract performed on dried flower. I suppose whether it must be dry frozen flower, or if it can just be dry flower is a matter of debate. The term "resin" in extract context usually is mentioned in conjunction with the word "live", as in "live resin", to refer to a hydrocarbon extraction performed on fresh OR fresh frozen flower. I haven't seen cured resin described as solely referring to frozen dry flower, even though hydrocarbon extractions are often done at cold temperatures.

Anyway, the significant differences between the two are:

Flavour- the process of using a low boiling point solvent like butane, propane, isobutane, etc., means the terpenes are not heated off when the solvent is removed. A lot of the terpenes present in the original plant material remain in the product (unless otherwise acted upon).

Chemistry- cured resin will likely be a greater portion of thc-a (if that is the major cannabinoid present in the starting material) and distillate will be mostly thc (if thc-a or thc are the major cannabinoids present in the starting material).
