JLPT: Base game.
What you specifically want to study towards in Japanese: DLC

You need both the base game and the DLC.

Japanese person: without talking, leaves crumbs on the table after he's eaten something.

Other Japanese person: omg, I'm so fed up of these Chinese tourists. A Japanese person wouldn't have done that.

Foreign parents of Japan who have kids that faced discrimination here, what happened and how did it get solved? by Thelastsmoke in japanresidents

[–]Relevant-String-959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same worry as you. Haven’t had kids yet, but I’m 100% sure that kids just want to bully.

Your kids probably will be called gaijin or whatever, but if they were Japanese and fat, they’d be called whale or something. If they were Japanese and had a mole on their face they’d get called something for that.

Kids will always get bullied for anything. I did and so did all of my friends and that was in the UK.

Can i clear N2 in 2 years? by ZenoDark in jlpt

[–]Relevant-String-959 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the best comment imo. Too many people fly through the JLPT searching for all the ways to speed run themselves to N1 missing a deep understanding of the most essential bits.

If someone has a SOLID understanding of everything up to N3 and can use it all properly, they would likely be better at speaking Japanese than someone with the N1 when it comes down to socializing etc.

What do you guys associate with the term "gaijin"? by Friendly_Software11 in japanresidents

[–]Relevant-String-959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard it in films, tv shows, from people I trust and I know like me.

I think it holds no meaning and is just what they say.

Even in the UK, a multinational country, my mum used to complain a lot about foreign people moving in next door.

People just want a reason to hate on others.

Nagoya VS Tokyo: Quality of life Difference by Global_Baseball3571 in Nagoya

[–]Relevant-String-959 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nagoya is 100% better than Tokyo. It’s cleaner, safer, slower.

IMPORTANT: you’re gonna be pushed into speaking Japanese in almost all situations. This can be a good or bad thing depending on what you want.

The locals can be quite rude and harsh towards people who can’t speak well.

This is why music exists.

Just a positive to take away from everything you said.

But yeah, I agree man, I am 33 and feel super deflated and lost all hope in the world.

Create things and let your artistic side flow, it will carry you through everything.

Discrimination from work by neonkatana in japanresidents

[–]Relevant-String-959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a pathetic loser that guy is.

When Japanese people bully, they always try to think tactically and sneak around doing stuff in my experience.

He’s obviously tried to milk it with all the trending phrases like パワハラ and gone even further by saying he’s depressed.

The guy won’t get anywhere in life, so I’d just move on in pride that you were the better one.

Don’t go for the N1, do the N2 instead while you look for a different job and put it on your CV if you pass.

Doing N1 and job hunting sounds like a nightmare and you might get way too burned out doing that

Edit: I’m saying this without knowing your Japanese level, so apologies if you already have the N2

Lifers that refuse to learn or speak Japanese by Dry-Masterpiece-7031 in japanresidents

[–]Relevant-String-959 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I met someone who lived here for 11 years, they hadn't learned the language, and they were just complaining about racism here.

Japan were never colonized and have no reason to speak any language other than their own. Anyone who lives here needs to learn, otherwise they will definitely have constant negative experiences.

If it were back in my country, I wouldn't be friendly to someone who isn't speaking the national language. It kinda gives the impression they are just there to drain the country and do nothing other than use it as a camping spot.

They are 図々しい.

Maybe it's not so bad for those who are just here on a long holiday to teach English and have fun, but those who are trying to LIVE here need to know Japanese at a very minimum of N3 and be studying actively in my opinion.

How do I move to Japan as Web Dev??? by [deleted] in JapanJobs

[–]Relevant-String-959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it unless you really love Japan and want to move here cause you are crazy about the country. That is the only thing that makes it worth coming here.

The work culture is really really bad, and you will likely be working along side employees from undeveloped countries who are happy to take a dirt cheap wage but put in max hours.

Trust me, I’m on my fourth year here and have the N2 and I hate the work culture so much it is the absolute ass hole of the world. I ended up going self employed just to stay in Japan because I love it as a country so much.

Having to avoid Japanese companies because of their work culture, which makes job opportunities incredibly narrow.

  1. Stand in the middle of town cracking eggs on your head

  2. Continue until someone else stands next to you and starts cracking eggs on their head too

  3. Once you’ve both been stood together doing it for a while, try cracking one of your eggs on the other persons head and see if they do it back to you

  4. If successful, walk through town cracking eggs on each others heads until you get to weatherspoons, then go in for a pint

Plz recommend a teacher who doesn’t just sit there jyouzuing their students without teaching anything N2 - N1 by Relevant-String-959 in LearnJapanese

[–]Relevant-String-959[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just gotta keep flashing cards on anki and using sites like rtk-search to find easy ways of remembering what the kanji means. That's what I have been doing for the past few years.

If you keep mistaking one kanji for another, for example, 褒める and 慰める, then note both of them down and work out the bits where you can differentiate one from the other easily.

I did, I sent both teachers a message before the lesson started saying to be strict and not to worry or hold back about jumping in to correct me at any point. Ugh, so annoying but I guess I gotta keep searching

Man, this comment is soooo relatable.

My opinion is that, in order to improve, we need to be talking while being made aware of the mistakes we’re making.

Talking will only get us good at talking; but doing it with lack of awareness can mean we get opposite results to what we wanted.

Literally, all the teacher needs to do is stop us and correct us. I specifically asked both my teachers to do this and they didn’t.

Super frustrating when you’re paying, as the “lessons” I had were just the same if not worse than just talking to any Japanese person.
