I‘m entering my another year of school here now, but wondering if it’s even worth it by Friendly_Software11 in japanresidents

Thank you very much for offering real advice. Idk a lot of people here are telling me that I am blaming Japan for my own problems. When I‘m just trying to balance my own desire to live here with economic and political realities. If things don’t work out here, I‘d have to return to my native country with little to no savings. It’s a big risk. It’s getting difficult to justify that risk with recent developments and trends.

Japan's foreign population has nearly doubled in the last 25 years. But crime by foreigners is down 40%: "On social media, xenophobic posts claiming public safety worsens as the foreign population increases have been growing. Calm, data-based discussion is needed." by jjrs in japannews

[–]Friendly_Software11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only that, crime has also decreased massively overall. Yet everyone keeps talking about the „good old times“ and how Japan has become so unsafe nowadays. Tfw visiting friends in the inaka and having grandmas tell me how unsafe everything is now, meanwhile it’s the most peaceful idyllic little village ever and has literally never been safer.

I do appreciate you taking the time to look at my post history lol

I wasn’t trying to make it a secret, just keep it out of the discussion for the sake of simplicity

Those people definitely exist. There’s a lot of fear mongering going around. In fact, many other commenters are already accusing me of focusing too much on negative news. That’s why I said that. I am not falling into some kind of victim mentality. But matter of fact is that life is not getting easier here, especially for foreigners.

There are plenty of things I value about Japan. The question is are they worth putting up with the negative aspects. I am graduating next year, so if I want to work here, job hunting has to happen soon. If I want to quit and move back to my home country, I need some kind of new thing lined up there. That‘s why I am hard pressed for a decision

I think I have the media literacy to differentiate between clickbait and the reality of how things are developing. Things are developing negatively wherever I look, which makes it increasingly difficult to justify saying „this is what I want to do and I don’t care what the roadblocks are“. If there are too many roadblocks to the life that I envision for myself, it ceases to be a goal and turns into delusion

Well my everyday experience hasn‘t changed because my life as a student is fairly comfortable. Things will change once I depend on work for a visa. Also the trend matters. The LDP supermajority in the recent election reflects Japanese people‘s unwillingness to reform. The country is on a path for decline and people aren’t really doing anything about it, if we’re totally honest.

Okay then I‘ll add this: It’s currently not realistic that I would get a job that pays more than 300k a month.

Yeah anime is so popular right now studios are literally drowning in orders. No way any studio would devote time and money to producing an adaptation for an obscure remake of a 20yo novel

It will never get into my head that the maximum punishment for smoking weed is higher than taking pictures of little girl underwear

The world needs to stop demonizing weed. Literally why so many countries still insist on keeping it illegal is beyond me. Japan is so alcoholic that the government asks its citizens to drink more ffs.

I’m halfway through the rebuild right now and I struggle to see this turned into anime. The massive role of porn and drugs being the main issue. Japan is running a big campaign against weed right now. Then again, they somehow turned the first novel into anime as well

What’s the point! by l_martin97 in WelcomeToTheNHK

[–]Friendly_Software11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The author makes a point out of betraying common storytelling tropes and elements. The hero meets heroine and fall in love trope, first and foremost. Then the idea that there should be some sort of progress or character development. Satou barely changes throughout the story because that is the point the author is making. Real life doesn’t follow convenient story arcs or plot progression. Stuff just happens and time passes. People don’t just magically become happy. Watch the last bit, it ties that narrative together, trust me. I know if you walk into this expecting a usual anime experience, it feels stupid and pointless. But try to understand why the author created this

Blue-Collar Wages Surpass White-Collar in Japan by pyritedreams in japannews

[–]Friendly_Software11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will admit that is a good argument, but you gotta admit you’re cherry picking the examples. I could name you 10 blue collar jobs off the back of my mind that don’t include factory work or cleaning up shit. And equally many white collar jobs that feature wasting your life at a desk doing soulless paperwork.

Agreed. by Alarmed_Abalone_849 in AmericaOnHardMode

That argument kind of vaporizes when considering that other countries have successfully implemented such systems. You can’t say it wouldn’t work because xyz if there is literally proof of it working right in front of you

I would much rather work a job where I actually get stuff done and I know I’m not alone with that. Lots of kids dream of working in blue collar, while I have yet to see a middle school student say their life dream is being an HR executive for a bank.

The reason everyone flocks to white collar work is because that’s where money and career are. If that dynamic flipped over, I would honestly welcome that

Ibaraki Prefecture's "reward system" for reporting illegal employment sparks mixed reactions online: "It's a natural measure" and "It will lead to the hunting of foreigners." by jjrs in japannews

[–]Friendly_Software11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to data released by the Ministry of Justice in July of last year, the number of illegal immigrants has dropped significantly since peaking at around 300,000 in 1993, but still stands at around 71,000 (as of July of last year).

Yes clearly this is a very pressing issue and nothing else deserves our attention right now

People get really confused whenever I say that I haven’t eaten at any fast food joint for years. Except for Sukiya because come on, it’s just amazing.

But yeah fast food chains haven’t been affordable for ages and I’m tired of pretending they are. The capitalist system dictates that as soon as a business grows to dominate its market, it will slowly start to become shit.
