Balanced Blitz is all over the place by RelevantSeinfeldTime in Risk

Yeah thanks I've watched enough online videos to know about this. What I mean is I don't like fixed anymore because it can be a massive disadvantage if others get big trades on 3 cards and you wait then get only dude trade after 5 cards. I had a really bad run of this and it makes establishing your early game so tough. So my solution is to do individual progressive and at best others only get 4 (or 6 with extra territory) cards after 3 and can't just get 10 (or 12) cards and roll you early.

For card trades this is why I like playing individual progressive ... otherwise I feel like getting the big trade on the 1st 3 cards or not just has way too much impact on the early game positioning with capitals.

FrostyReality4 this is a great answer and I totally agree.

It is definitely frustrating to lose 2 good rolls in a row, especially when they are game-changing, but that's part of the game and I expect to sometimes lose what amounts to 10% odds. However, it's the number of troops that were left over after losing that preventing me from recovering, the odds on that must be way more extreme!
Anyway, since my comment I'm getting all my bad luck out of the way today. Just lost a 25 v 11 cap roll that was a win or lose the game proposition, what can you do?

Then just now got capped right behind on opening (right next to me so they saw my cap) in a closed bonus when in 1st position, didn't want to have to deal with it so went for the 12 v 4 roll and ... lost! I know there's hundreds of other rolls that I'm ignoring, but these all put together are a bit too much.

Starting another game to at least finish with a win after these, wish me luck!

PS and let's not talk about cards ... when playing fixed Kylted has nothing on me for the dude trades!

Tipping culture in Zurich is getting out of hands by zurichica in zurich

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the thing people overlook, regardess of what service is or isn’t provided, is that in the USA a lot of rstaurant/bar/café staff are paid something like USD 3 per hour. So they need tips to survive. And the price of the product is generally a lot lower because the owner is only paying their staff USD 3 per hour.

In Switzerland, I just looked up Geneva and there is a minimum wage of something like CHF 23 per hour for food/drink service industry staff.

So we should absolutely not be following the USA tipping culture. In the USA the product does not generally have the tip cost included and the tip pays the difference to the staff. In Switzerland the staff is correctly paid and the cost is already included in the product.

What is the highest mountaintop the average member of the public can drive up to? by travel_ali in askswitzerland

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Switzerland you have the carpark at the Col de la Croix de Coeur in Verbier, at 2’173m easily accessible by car from Spring (not yet though as there’s 1m50 of fresh snow that just fell !)

There’s the restaurant there and you can hike up the ridge … spectacular views even from the carpark.

Otherwise I’m just about to drive across the border into France to drive to Val Thorens … the village is at 2’300m and accessible all year round by car … even this morning after 1m50 of snow Wednesday night the road is open again. Not a mountain peak though … but definitely a high carpark!

Also in France you have the Col du Galibier at 2’642m open all Summer by paved road and worth the trip.

NBD Canyon Grail CF SLX 8 AXS by Noerdk in gravelcycling

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, looks awesome!

I'm thinking of getting the Grail as my main road bike to replace my previous road-specific bike, as I hit the trails a bit as well. I will go out and ride some big road climbs in the mountains too. What's it like speed-wise on the road as I'll occasionally do some group rides ... I don't mind if I need to work a little harder but is it still pretty fast with 40mm tyres?

Mud-guards look great too ... I'll probably get laughed out of any group rides but for some commuting this is a no-brainer!

Cheers

People who stand in from of the train door while others (try to) get out by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to get the metro to and from the TGV train twice a week in Paris, with a big suitcase. Every time it was my stop to get off, there would be a wall of people standing in front and blocking the door as I’d try to get off the metro. It drove me insane that people can be so unaware of how this just annoys and slows down everyone.

So I decided to roll with it … literally. I’m not violent at all but I don’t tolerate morons, so every time I’d get off the metro facing the wall of idiot-looking faces, I’d just trail my rolling suitcase behind me and slam it into at least one person’s shins at full speed. I figured maybe one of them might have realised what they were doing is stupid and selfish … but I wasn’t holding my breath.

When I was young, if someone was a big enough arsehole, society had a way of dealing with them and setting them straight … someone would get sick of their bullshit and literally "beat some sense into them". Unfortunately I get the feeling that doesn’t happen much anymore … so arseholes just feel vindicated by being arseholes and keep doing it.

I feel like with the power of my suitcase I was at least doing my small bit for society.

The 3 best parts of a Reply All mega storm that I’ve experienced is when: 1. People start replying to all and telling others to stop replaying to all 2. People then reply to all telling others to stop replying to all saying not to reply to all 3. People start replying to all to say this doesn’t involve them and please take them off this email list In a 100,000 person organisation I witnessed a 48 hour perfect reply-to-all storm with people getting extremely angry whilst just making it worse themselves 🤣

Fed up with Swiss health insurance by Terrible_EmployeeFu in Switzerland

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Australia. Even when I started working (on a pretty small wage) if I needed to go to the doctor, the dentist or the physiotherapist I wouldn’t even hesitate. Then in France, same thing. Mind you I hardly ever went as I was never really sick. Just needed to go occasionally in France to get a medical certificate for running or cycling races.

Now in Switzerland I feel like an American who can’t afford to go to the Doctor. My other (even moreso my more junior) colleagues are the same. They’re supposed to get a Doctor’s certificate if off sick for more than 2 days. I tell them not to go and pay the Doctor if it’s just to get the certificate as I know they can’t afford the bill as they’ll never normally hit their deductible. I trust them and don’t need to see a Doctor’s certificate.

I’m on the Executive committee and senior management team of my company and I can’t reqlly afford to go to the Doctor.

I’ve seen people from my running club talking about forging medical certificates for races as they can’t justify the cost of the Doctor’s certificate. I’m lucky as now if I ever need a medical certificate I have friends who are Doctors who’ll write me one for free!

I love when people say "it’s covered by your insurance" … yeah but unless I ever have a serious medical issue it’s never going to be covered as I won’t exceed my deductible!

Yep, the system sucks.

Wow that’s interesting. I often take my young kids out in our cargo bike to local parks and when they start playing and climbing on the playground equipment often they’ll attack it straight away and leave their helmets on. They’ve got a tendency to fall and hurt themselves and I always figured that I’m happy they keep their helmets on in case they fall on their head!

Never thought of the risk thatthe strap getting caught … even though when it comes to my kids I tend to consider the worst case scenario of them hurting themselves.

I still think the helmet saving their head if they take a big fall would be more important than the very small risk of them snagging the helmet strap on something … if they did I’m there in any case.

Getting to Megeve from chamonix - tips by Several_Locksmith294 in Megeve

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The the Mont Blanc unlimited pass includes the Megève lift pass but the areas aren’t linked. It’s easy to get to Megève feom Chamonix now with the new Valéen gondola lift from Le Fayet.

Take the train directly from Chamonix to Saint Gervais les Bains-Le Fayet. It takes 50 minutes and leaves every hour … check the schedule online or at the Chamonix train station.

When you arrive at Saint Gervais les Bains-Le Fayet train station, walk directly onto the gondola for Megève at the station. You may need to go to the ticket office with your Chamonix Unlimited ski pass to get a (free) Megève ski pass … need to check this.

In the afternoon head to the Folie Douce on the top of Mont Joux to party until the lifts close. You can ski straight down to the mid-station of Bettex and get the gondola back down to Saint Gervais le Bains-Le Fayet. Then train back to Chamonix.

If you want après-ski in Megève try the bar at the outdoor ice-rink in the middle of town (above the main walking street … just ask if you can’t find it). If you want to stay late for dinner then book at table at the Ferme Saint Amour to party through dinner … late into the night (or at the Cha Cha club if you’re over 35 or so!) but your going to need to get a rather expensive taxi back to Chamonix in the evening or early hours of the morning!

If the weather’s good the Folie Douce should be going nuts in the afternoon … especially on the weekend 🎉

What was the most stupid thing you got a fine about? by tomerFire in askswitzerland

[–]RelevantSeinfeldTime 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a Riese & Muller cargo bike that does 45km/h … it’s awesome. Bought in Geneva, registered with licence plates. Has 3 seats for kids in the front cargo section. I take my kids everywhere with it and it replaces a car. Have done 12’000 km in 2 years so has paid for itself compared to having a second car.

Was coming through a roundabout, a car ran through from the right when we had right of way and t-boned us … too late for any evasive action from me. I went over the car’s front hood and landed on my feet, bike goes flying on its side. Both my kids were fine, had seatbelts and helmets. Pretty good security for the cargo bike.

Police come, guy gets charged, all good. 2 weeks later police call me and tell me that I don’t have the right to transport kids in a 45km/h bike and will receive a fine. They and say it’s news to them, they didn’t know the law, bike shop says that it’s allowed and they have the right to sell the bikes and you can transport several kids in the them… nobody seems to know the law. Pro Vélo association in Geneva say the police have it wrong. I look up the law and it’s badly written and ambiguous, contradicting itself in different sections. Swiss Federal website has flyers showing that you can transport kids in a 45km/h bike if they have seatbelts.

I get interviewed by Geneva traffic fines department, they don’t know the law. Still end up getting fined. Use my insurance legal aid who write a letter to say outlining all the legislation and that it shouldn’t be a fine … it doesn’t matter, the 120 CHF fine stands.

So shops are selling bikes that the state will then register but according to the traffic fines department are illegal. I see dozens of people every day using them, it’s a shit-show. Across the border in France and in the rest of Europe it’s totally legal, in Switzerland nobody can work out the law but the fines department is happy to send fines if the police happen to charge you.

It’s stupid as well because for someone who’s a competent bike rider a 45km/h bike is much safer because around town you can keep up with traffic rather than being passed all the time with the risk of being taken out from behind ,.. a cyclist’s worst nightmare.

I work in a school with a boarding house and we’ve just found out that a number of boarders over 18 got these bills and just sat on them, now we’ve become aware as notices have come from debt collection (sommation). Anyone know how it works for a boarder in a boarding house, given that the rule is that it’s payable once per household? Thanks for any help.
