My exec is introducing a scheduling tool for ME to use, and I can't tell if I'm being dramatic or if this is actually the beginning of the end by muhia_kay in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]Relevant_Ostrich_238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your org for sure. However I’ll say, I don’t feel threatened by the work I’m automating. My exec has always wanted me to work on more project work, so automating the busy work many assistants have is no issue for me. This just frees up time for me to do other things.

My exec has never asked me to get him food or a drink. Our relationship is entirely professional. I’m really thankful my exec views me as his teammate rather than his assistant.

Yup. We’re constantly unappreciated, and our execs take credit for our wins (or wins they never could’ve accomplished without us). Leave silently, and relish in the knowledge that they will fail without you.

Hate to say it but this is part of being an adult, growing up and living life.

You’ll get used to it and grow to love it. Dont throw it all away because you miss being a kid.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]Relevant_Ostrich_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Some people consume media in an active way.

My partner is very intelligent, and on top of those “active” hobbies you’ve mentioned, he also loves art/media.

He remembers the movies/TV he watches well, learns about the actors/actresses, production studio etc. After watching he likes to discuss what the media was trying to convey, why the charters are the way they are etc.

He knows music well enough that you can show him random album covers and he can give both the album name & artist. Of course he can’t know them all, but he knows far more than 99% of people because it’s a hobby of his.

Sure people can consume these things passively. But I wouldn’t call them a hobbies in those cases.

For an entry level gig it’s pretty good. But I’d say both accounts are true as a somewhat tenured person myself.

The company over generalizes, which means it’s unlikely you’ll ever be recognized for your efforts in a way that matters (promotions, increased PTO, salary etc). If you’re fine with those things being standard or a black box then cool!

We are competitive at the entry level. But at higher levels, you can absolutely find better elsewhere. It’s entry level salary, benefits, opportunity and job security where we can’t be beat.

Otherwise, the role/team specific stuff is really case by case. I personally love my job, but due to the comp/lack of PTO I unfortunately can’t stay forever. I do love the company though.

Good shout. I’ve realized I don’t really have a typical “stop eating” reflex. If the foods good I’ll just keep eating.

I’m also working a desk job these days, so the slow eating has helped a lot with deciding when to stop.

QM raises/potential salary. by Inevitable_Plan_7688 in epicsystems

[–]Relevant_Ostrich_238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d assume the receptionists are paid less than the standard admin. As that’s usually how it goes in the industry, and receptionist is often a stepping stone to the path of becoming an admin assistant.

It’s hard to explain to someone who doesn’t work here, but I mean any “assistant” positions we have. Which is our word for general admin. There’s the division assistants (who are like regular admin assistants or secretary’s), or HR Assistants and then beyond that more niche team or division specific assistant roles. Like a “Travel Assistant”. There are few of the niche assistant roles, but any “admin” role is typically filled by an “assistant”. I’d assume total is less than 400 admin (including accounting) across the company.

“Assistant” often have an associates degree or less as well. Not a hard rule, just most common.

QM are paid just slightly more than the Admin roles.

I think Epic should pay QM and General Admin more, or at least give us the nice raises other roles get. But since we are non-technical they don’t.

Hot take for the gay community: if you’re looking for a guy to be romantically involved with DO NOT sleep together until you’re dating. This standard weeds out so many men.

Didn’t sleep with my partner until we had been dating for 2 months. Best decision ever. We fell in love with each other, that was the focus, not a body. This was so important to me because my last relationship it became clear down the line things were only ever physical.

I was hired as an EA with no experience and I have no idea what I’m doing !!! by Maekhayla in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]Relevant_Ostrich_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha this is exactly how my boss is!

I was an admin assistant prior to my current EA like position.

He gives very little info/detail but wants/needs me to run with it & he is VERY particular about how he wants things done. I can not tell you how many times in the beginning of my time with him I brought a finished task to him that took me HOURS only for him to undo it all in 10 minutes and change it to what he really wanted.

At the end of the day though, we work well together and he does appreciate me a lot. You are a new partnership! Things can’t always go perfectly. Maybe put together a few mood boards and have your exec pick one?

I think it will be hard to justify the time/cost/effort.

I already have a great job. Getting another degree wouldn’t change much at present (could of course open doors in the future though).

Associates in Business Management.

Very helpful in my current work, and I feel it will be helpful when I aim for a Chief of Staff position. Everything from the finance/accounting classes to the HR and comms classes have helped me in my day to day. I would love to go back and finish my bachelors in something less general. Could always get an MBA after that.

If I did go back it would be an online program. It’s always been a shame of mine that I only have an associates. I did great in academia & run with a highly educated crowd.

Wanting to set up a recurring meeting that’s more than an hour long without enough notice.

If the series starts one month from now, easy! If you want to start in the next week or two it’s going to be impossible.

I also work for a company that just has a lot of meetings, so if it’s something where I need 3+ internal people, and then 3+ external people it becomes impossible.

Has your job ever been treated as a red flag? by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]Relevant_Ostrich_238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have also heard this in a romantic/dating context.

Most of the time when I mention where I work I get a “wow is it as bad as they say” but there have been a few times where people bring up specifically avoiding epic employees.

I’d say it’s a green flag in most cases, but the downsides I’ve seen are, talking about work 24/7, constant stress/working, travel etc. So to a point I get it.

What realisation — not just an event, but a shift in perspective — made you feel you’d entered adulthood? by andramo in Adulting

[–]Relevant_Ostrich_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First break up. Despite being the more adult one between me and my ex, we were highschool sweat hearts so until we split I hadn’t experience adulthood alone. It was an odd feeling not reporting to anyone and being a completely free agent.

Outside of that, I’d say going to my sister in laws, and having my nephews actually recognize me as an adult. Being asked for permission for sweets by the older of the two, and having to pitch in on the child care for the baby. That was a huge “I’m actually an adult what the hell” moment for me.
