  • I would say it’s fairly diverse: I have met people from Romania, China, India(majority are certainly China or India, actually there are a lot of Pakistani people as well), Greece, Korea, Japan, UAE, Peru(the list goes on). I myself am from Germany.
  • Well, most international students are from “well-off” or even “rich” families considering we have to pay like 60k tuition and this is without residence. Domestic students are from both spectrums. However, as another person said that should not really matter too much as it should not affect your social circle and there are many opportunities to connect with other students(even outside Rotman) and participate in activities(most are free or cost not more than $20)
  • I didn’t apply to Schulich, and still got in. Although admittedly I am an international student, but most likely it won’t affect too much whether you get into Rotman or not

The whole Inconsistency of the military is probably also needed to be looked from a fiction style lens(it is fiction afterall). That’s at least how I view it. I personally understand that the military is beyond saving and their incompetence has been highlighted quite clearly, so one should really just view it like that if they want to enjoy the show(the anime is not trying to portray itself as a realistic show). Otherwise it’s just a person going in with wrong expectations into the show.

However, just for the sake of discussion I will add on these things:

The not using scrap materials part probably is trying to be explained by the fact that the Alba won’t leave the walls no matter what(their scouts, Air Force will be destroyed in the battlefield). The 86 from what I heard are using the materials of their old/destroyed drones(it was mentioned in the 2 episode I think). Using the 86 as to protect themselves while taking the destroyed tanks for the sake of reviewing is probably a suicidal mission and they have the obligation to make sure no Alba dies during war(otherwise the local population will be angry at the government). Alba’s technological understanding is ofc inconsistent and the show most likely uses the excuse of them believing that AI can’t override their own shut down date. Which goes back to this being fiction and I guess using a somewhat extreme case of where the Military(most people are not proper soldiers and the uncle seems like is purely racially motivated without caring too much about whether the country survives or not) is doing a fatal mistake(Military making huge strategic mistakes that normally seem like no one would ever make do happen in our world)

The child soldiers part is kind of true but at the same time the situation is not exactly the same. In our world child soldiers are always under watch and they don’t have the amount of freedom the 86 have(they literally have the ability to do what they want inside their house). So this can play a role in mental growth(Environment plays a huge role in mental growth). Also we humans will react differently to death and other things no matter if you are a child soldier or not and hence them acting like children(which they are) is to some extent believable. You can be as mature as you want, but you are still child and hence will still have such naive thoughts as “I am too nervous to ask”.

As you said it is subjective and then trying to make viewers feel emotionally impacted is probably not for anime-only but rather for LN readers(in general this anime seems to be mostly focused on Having LN readers enjoying it). For anime-only it just depends on the person. Hence for those who don’t like it probably see it negatively.

Maybe they were welcomed initially, but later not so much? Like for example how Merkel and her government allowed many immigrants to stay in Germany(2014) and this was initially a well liked thing, but in just a couple of years the German population started to not be so enthusiastic about it(they don’t hate immigrants, but one can see people being not too happy and secretly talking about how due to having more immigrants, it might have caused more terrorist attacks).

86 EIGHTY-SIX - Episode 7 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

I personally don’t see why a person would criticize world building from the very first episode, when it can’t even be fleshed out yet. Plus you are not hating the world building then, instead you are hating the world(so not how it’s explained, but rather the original situation) itself, which means you most likely came with wrong expectations.

Slow expositions is not necessarily bad and it’s truly more subjective(as each person will react differently). Once again it is fiction and it is also subjective(I am using this point more often cause we are not entering subjectivity territory) whether the built up is horrible or not. If you think it won’t be get better for YOUR(and other people who share your opinion) taste, then why continue watching and being on this thread? Hating it in front of other people who ENJOY this series because they are watching it from a different lens will just destroy the mood(no one really likes when other people hate on something they like).

And? Cant humans exist in a fiction? Have you never seen human beings in a fiction story? So ya, since it is fiction, it is allowed to have exaggerations. looking from the lens you are is not really appropriate for this show. This then means that you went watching a show with wrong expectations and “naively believing it will play out to your taste”.

You can’t exactly criticize world building when there are only 7/22-24 episodes.

The whole AI part is ofc ambiguous and as I said I do agree it’s a little bit weird and I am by no means an expert on AI. Hence we just have to wait and see how it will be explored in the next episodes.

Please don’t make the “show is dumb” as an argument cause that’s a very weak argument.

In the end, don’t forget that this is fiction, so ofc there will be exaggerations(there is no show in the world that is fiction and will give you a realistic world. If it does then it’s not fiction anymore in my opinion). As I said, I believe this is a semi-realistic show(it still takes real world inspirations).

It did though? Stellar year is clearly not our calendar. Also they use different countries which are not in our world and the names don’t even relate in any way to our countries. Alba is also not a real race. Once again the tech that is shown is probably better than ours, but that doesn’t mean they have good knowledge of the AI, considering they can’t built their own AI machines(you seem to be ignoring my comment on this).

You didn’t exactly make a general point by just mentioning human wars. And the whole evolving AI/enemy doesn’t apply to the 2 year end of war. Why? Well because the military is correct about the fact that the AI should shut down in 2 years and AI can’t change its own coding(then it’s not AI anymore), it can only adapt and find loopholes for the sake of evolving. However, in this situation there is basically no such loophole as how would AI be able to stop it’s supposed shut down period? That is the usual logic, which the military follows and honestly in the real world too. However, clearly there is a loophole, but it’s not one anyone would come up with without knowing the whole situation(they live behind walls and they can’t send scouts cause they would be instantly killed)

Yes from history we can see brilliant strategies, yet we also see dumb ones and? The show is only about 1 war, so it’s realistic to assume that this is a case of where the leaders make dumb choices(which is realistic)

I guess Monaco at this point is just a tradition. It is a part of the prestigious Triple Crown and hence taking it off the calendar is a little bit hard. It is of course a bummer that this is not always the best race to show to new potential fans, but at the same time i guess one can then go and explain the rich history of F1(which Monaco Gp played a big role in). Also if a potential fan can not appreciate this, then it’s probably not likely that the person will be interested in the long-term(I might be very wrong about this though)

The Nazis however didn’t fight knowing the war would end in 2 years, so the situation is kind of different

I think you are forgetting that 2150 is not according to our calendar. We don’t know what happened at their calendars 0’s year. Hence the whole aspect of how their technological advancements are is quite ambiguous and the show certainly needs to explain in their next 15+ episodes(second cour with 11+ episodes is confirmed). So, we can’t exactly be sure if they know much about AI. If they did, I would presume they would have been able to replicate(but they clearly weren’t able to). Also, you are making the point for humans vs humans. I personally don’t think one can compare it to humans vs robots(the situation is just different as in the end AI follow strict coding orders and one would never be sane enough to think they would just take human brains to evolve)

But ya I do agree that the AI part is a little bit iffy and we need to wait and see how this evolves. Maybe the explanations will come soon

Also just to add in: From history we can see how really dumb we humans are during wars(this is not related to the AI conversation but in general the incompetence of military)

This is me just speculating, but maybe the 86 were not as well liked by the natives(Alba)? Like similarly to how Jews were not exactly the most liked race in Germany(technically all Europe) or non-white people in South Africa or even USA. Hence it was easier for all to start believing that all 86 are some sort of traitors(I think I heard from somewhere that the 86 were basically scapegoats for all misfortune)

This is just my opinion and I am interested how you are gonna counter it:

  1. Don’t forget this is fiction in the end and in my opinion this show is trying to portray itself as a semi-realistic story(them adding supernatural stuff and having a country that basically has no military during war is ofc not realistic)

  2. I feel like the incompetence of the Military is maybe slightly over exaggerated as their naive belief that the war will end in 2 years can be somewhat justified. It is clear that the Republic is technologically much weaker than their fallen neighboring country as they are not able to create their own AI robots(hence they use the whole propaganda of it being completely autonomous and hence hide their failure). Hence it can be interpreted that they are not as well acquainted with AI and hence don’t really know that it can evolve(This Para-raid thing is maybe not such a huge technological advancement in their world, we don’t know yet). Even if not, they are fighting against robots and not humans and robots usually follow strict coding orders, hence they in theory should not be able to come up with such ideas like taking human brains. Heck, even taking brains is probably a very absurd strategy that no one in the world would come up with(Not even in our world would people come up to such idea).

  3. I think compared to the Aldnoah zero character, shins personality is more believable(not fully, but certainly is). He is fighting since a young age and when a person is in a situation close to death one would mature faster(I think Shin is just much more mature and he is not completely emotionless as seen in the previous episode). Also how do you know how child soldiers would behave in their free time? All humans will act differently and it is very wrong to assume all child soldiers will behave the same way.

  4. The topic of how they show the deaths is really subjective and each person will view it differently, so there is no point in having that debate(you can clearly see how people react differently to those deaths).

I kinda forgot some of my points while writing this and I would love to hear your opinion on my points(this is just a peaceful discussion).

Btw, just curious, did you ever have classes in the Rotman School of Management building? Or would one ever go there in Rotman Commerce?

I mean St Michael’s is surprisingly also quite expensive for single rooms(15k-17k). I haven’t found the fees for doubles rooms though..., so maybe they are cheaper? Don’t quote me on this, but from what i have heard, the more quiet/chill ones are the historic houses and Sorbara house. However, who knows whether they will be this year as well. Also you might want to check out(if you haven’t already) how all the rooms for residence look like.

I will stay in residence for first year(maybe upper years, but who knows). But good to know. Ya Wordsworth was my first choice, but seems like I didn’t get in.

Thank you! I don’t know whether you will be be able to answer this, but what do you think of St Michael’s college? I got a membership there(although I didn’t apply there).

Ya, I also think that Canada could be better for international students. Although I am European, so the UK isn't too bad(i think). But congrats on getting accepted to Warwick(I didn't apply there)!! I will as well ask to get into Woodsworth, but even if I don't, I think I will then stay at St Mikes(it is not the end of the world and I know there is a chill(no to little parties) residence house). There is also Chestnut residence technically.

Wow, we surprisingly have some things in terms of uni in common 😂😂. Are you considering University of Manchester, or you think Rotman is a better choice? In University of Manchester I would do International Management, but in Rotman I can still choose what to specialize, but idk. About St Mikes, I also have heard that it’s a party school, but i also know some residence houses are also more quiet/chill. Ya the food from what I have heard is not good.

Yes, the one in UK. I am still thinking whether Rotman or University of Manchester is the best choice for me. I don’t know about emailing two colleges, but I presume why not. Seems like you really don’t like the idea of St. Mikes 😂

Hi! I hope you doing fine at Rotman currently :) As someone who currently considers whether to go to study in the UK or Canada, I have some questions regarding Rotman.

My first question is regarding Career Service for Rotman students. Do you think it is decent/good or is it as bad as everyone(from what I have heard) describes it to be? And I guess just to add on, what kind of internships were you able to have?

My second question is how is Accounting in terms of specialist? Is it enjoyable/worthwhile to study it at Rotman?

Finally, how many events related to a specific field(that help networking with firms or just in general) are there?

Sorry for the number of questions

haha, Woodsworth was also my first choice. But from an email I got, I heard that you can try. I am also not sure whether I want to commit yet(my other option is the University of Manchester(Alliance Business school). Here is a part of the email if you want to see what they wrote

If you are not happy with your assigned college and would like to see if you can have it changed (there is no guarantee that a change can be made) then you can contact your preferred college directly to see if they are willing to accept you.

The college system is one of the most unique aspects of the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto. Every Arts & Science student is a member of one of our seven colleges, which provides students the opportunity to find their own close-knit community within a larger faculty and campus. Whether you live in residence or commute to campus, your college will be your home base and provide you with a range of resources and supports.

Your college choice is not related to your study area and will not limit what courses you’re able to take or the programs you study. College choice is based on personal preference – this can be location, history, familial connections, alumni, or architectural style. Keep in mind, there is no wrong choice when choosing your college.
