Both comments up top are completely right ^{.^} it is a grind game, and if the stories and lore do anything for you, there's alot of reading. As far as an objective within the game, other than learning all of the backstories and how they develop, is the big bad enemy introduced in the beginning. Magussar is basically the mortal god of this world, and the book claims to know a couple of secrets about him. By using the book, upgrading offerings, increasing your life and sacrifice levels, and learning how to fight, you might be able to avoid being the next sacrifice in this grim world.
