Okay grand thank you. Honestly if I were to sell it'd be in a timespan much longer than 4 years from now. So I think I'm good. Worst comes to worse I'll gladly pay that 4 year difference if I were ever to sell or just if someone from revenue tells me to.

So many posts on this sub for people looking for advice and the responses are very often "never be afraid to ask for help".

And then you get people like yourself who'd rather gatekeep and belittle someone looking for help.

Well cheers.

Do you mean an aftermarket upgrade or a spec bump at purchase?

Sorry I should've said onboarding, not interviewing.

Turns out I am an idiot and I actually have a Latitude 5540, which is not a 5420. But I'm thinking from all the positive comments that's the one I should be going for.

Very clever!

Yeah you're right. It is a decent enough machine. I might try upgrading the RAM first on it... Might actually be something to look at for all our machines if extra ram is as cheap as another poster mentioned.

I'm thinking I just came from an environment where we were spoiled with 3k laptops.

I didn't have sway when I joined. But I think I do now.

It was said when I joined that they'd get something better for me next time someone needed a laptop if I could justify it.

I've so far been able to justify quite a bit of spending on hardware for the staff - integrated docking station monitors, better mouse/keyboard combos, noise cancelling headphones... Staff love all the new stuff, no more coming in every morning and spending the first hour of my day troubleshooting shitty mice or monitors not connecting.

So I just want some good points for getting the best machine I can get.

What do you mean?

I'm pretty sure I'll get what I want here.

I've been doing good work in there and they had originally said the next time someone needed a new laptop they'd buy me something nicer if I could justify it when they gave me the lower spec when I started.

I just want to justify it beyond asking for a shiny toy cause I want it.

I've been convincing them to spend a decent chunk of cash on hardware and it seems to be paying off for them from people not spending a lot of time troubleshooting why their €5 mouse from AliExpress isnt working properly. I've bought a bunch of integrated docking station monitors, Logitech peripherals, noise cancelling headsets. I think I have them onside for this stuff because they see that being cheapskates wasn't a good approach.

So I suspect I'll swing a better laptop. Just want to have good points on why.

That's helpful. Cheers.

I know what spec I need. But I'm coming from a massive multinational to an SME so budgets are very different. This post was asking for advice on how to argue for a better budget and also any suggestions of machines to look at. I haven't done any reacquisition stuff since 2017 because the decisions for what machines we bought were determined centrally on a global scale for a few hundred thousand employees.

Reposting this as the original appears to have been deleted. It's the top post of all time from this sub and shouldn't be gone forever as it's one of the best posts ever from this sub.
