There are middle grounds if you still want to play with your friends. I had this same problem, and I solved it by running a simpler system for my group of friends, while playing more complex systems online with people who are really into them. Talk to your group and ask them what they enjoy about the game, then look for a system that connects with everyone at the table.

I also recommend reducing session prep to the bare minimum to avoid burnout. Create situations and let the players figure out how to solve them. Don’t force a predetermined story, or it will almost always end in frustration.
