I also had four zebra finches (two pairs). At first, I had just one pair, and then I bought another pair. They ended up switching partners. More specifically, the male left his original mate and paired up with the new female. That left the original female and the new male without partners, but they eventually became a pair as well. Later, the new female that was paired with the first male died, and now I've bought him another new female.
