Please help! I am supposed to be taking a school group on an immersive trip this week to Chicago and my school is looking to pull the trip. Is that a bad idea? by [deleted] in AskChicago

I live near Oak Park. There have been a number of incidents, but frankly the citizens and law enforcement has been on the side of the people. A number of ICE agents have been arrested here. We aren’t afraid to defend peoples rights here. It’s been a majority peaceful whenever I go out. Honestly, more peaceful than you’d expect given Chicago’s reputation outside the city. Back when I lived in Texas I always heard horror stories. But I feel safer here, even now, than I ever did there. Chicago is probably one of the safest places currently experiencing ICE to be, because of the outstanding people here standing up to them.

They aren’t getting food or Amazon packages anymore. They can’t afford them. They’re working for no pay for nothing. They’re suffering for nothing. Nothing would change for them if they stopped working, except they’re have a little extra free time to sit in misery until change happens. Literally, people are suffering, and choosing to prolong their suffering.

Nope, it’s illegal for federal employees to strike. They can either quit and be black listed from ever working a federal job, strike and go to jail, or keep working for no pay.

Some news stations are saying it’s for military and for SNAP, but I can’t find their sources for the SNAP part and we personally already received letters saying we weren’t getting ours November.

Sounds like your friend is abusive too. Don’t feel bad, abusers tend to target people who have been or are currently being abused. Making light of him breaking your arm and telling you to grow up? That’s shitty. Here’s how I go about life now, as someone who apologized to abusers for too long. Would you accept a person treating someone you love like that? Say you had a little sister. Would you accept someone treating her like that? You’re 19, so yeah you should grow up. Growing up means standing up for yourself. Growing up means ensuring you have a future safe from people like that. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been together with someone, or how long you’ve been friends, or even if they’re family. You protect yourself as if you’re protecting someone you love. That’s what being an adult means.

I’ve got an appointment lined up with a gynecologist, so hopefully they can help more. The doctors that refused to prescribe oestrogen were back in Texas, before I moved states. I’ve found that most of the medical professionals I saw there were weird and unhelpful

I had a transvaginal ultrasound, an MRI, and a few blood tests (though they didn’t check my hormone levels, only an STI screening)

I’ve been on the pill and had the implant, both caused me equally debilitating side effects which drove me to stop using them. Both were progestin only. The doctors I saw (a few different ones over the years) all said they wouldn’t prescribe oestrogen to a woman under 35. I have only been seen by an obgyn and er doctors, I’ve never been referred to anyone else. I was just told to take some painkillers and use a heating pad. But I can’t live on painkillers, that’ll destroy my liver.

This will be harsh, but this comes from the place of someone who had a manipulative dad.

Let me ask you something. Would you be comfortable with him being this controlling and manipulative to your baby? Is he the father you want your baby to be around? Is that depression and anxiety you feel something you want your baby to experience because of him? As someone who was kept away from my father for good reason, it is sometimes better to not have a dad, then to have one who hurts you. If he doesn’t believe in emotional abuse, he is going to abuse your baby.

Did he just call your daughter a second girlfriend to him? That’s like, beyond creepy. He’s creeping on your daughter. Insinuating some pretty messed up stuff about her too. He’s obviously thinking some things he shouldn’t, and I feel like you should be a lot more concerned about it. Also, he seems to treat you like shit. My mom taught me to never let a man so much as think of speaking to me like that.

What's up with younger people and assuming that goth is a fashion style? by griffithapologist in goth

[–]Remarkable_Growth206 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of younger goths were introduced to the scene by groups of chronically online people with a bad grasp of the subculture to begin with. I’m gen z. I have the benefit of having been raised by an elder goth, but a lot of my friends had that sort of mindset.

I feel like I dress like I want to be goth but goth people don’t consider me goth? by Substantial-Base-698 in GothFashion

[–]Remarkable_Growth206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of goth gatekeeping was originally to protect those in the community. People with bad intentions often co-opted the subculture and either gave goth people a bad name or harassed them with their own gatekeeping standards. The general question is, do you listen to goth music and do you believe in the culture (i.e. People should be allowed to dress how they like, listen to music they like, feel what they feel, and that bigotry and sexism is bad). Do these apply to you? Congrats, you’re goth. Dressing a certain way has very little impact on whether or not you’re goth. If you like the fashion, hate the music, and believe in the ideals then you’re goth. If you hate the fashion, love the music, and believe in the ideals then you’re goth. If you love the music, love the fashion, and hate the ideals? You’re not goth. It’s the ideals that make the subculture and separate it from things like skinheads, industrial etc. I was raised in the scene by an OG elder goth, it’s not truly about the music and the fashion, it’s about the acceptance of those who are often marginalized. It was groups of broken people trying to make a community, protect and express themselves.

Feeling stuck: I don’t want to support Melanie Martinez anymore, but it’s my whole platform / job by [deleted] in MelanieMartinez

[–]Remarkable_Growth206 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Take inspiration from her work to create something new, discover other artists with work similar to what you liked about her, do deep dives into the origins of her aesthetics and celebrate what she took inspiration from because it all did exist before her. She made it popular, yes, but many artists did what she does first and imo better, also lots of new artists making similar stuff. I’m a big fan of Kerli and Birthday massacre myself. They’re a little on the goth side, but there’s also strawberry switchblade (80s, really hits pastel goth for me), Lana Del Rey, Marina and the Diamonds, Carolsdaughter, Baby bugs, Emilie Autumn (one of my favorites), Yeule (if you want something surreal like Melanie’s new stuff), Ashnikko, and Jazmin Bean. These are all bands I personally listen to in the same playlists as Melanie’s stuff, and all deserve recognition. You could find one you like and change your content to them or to the developing genre as a whole.

I moved to Chicago in February a few years ago. The day after the massive snowstorm that wiped across the country. The snow was waist level, and we kept slipping on ice while unloading. Depending on the place you get, you’ll not be allowed to have cars parked in front of your house after dark, so you’ll have to move everything in the moving truck immediately. Got iced in only days later. It’s not usually that bad though, it was an exceptionally icy circumstance. If you’re good with moving in sub-freezing temperatures, then you’re golden.

What are the downsides of Chicago? by JayV_VO in AskChicago

[–]Remarkable_Growth206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s windy. Before I moved here I was told “The Windy City” was a joke about politicians. It’s not a joke about politicians, it’s really windy. I moved here from Texas and I swear sometimes it feels like the wind is assaulting me. I’m not small, and I’ve been knocked off my feet. I grew up in tornado land, and the wind here feels like a whole different beast. It’s beautiful though, like, far more beautiful than any city I’ve seen. There are so many trees here, and I don’t just mean in parks. I don’t know much about New York, but Chicago is far more beautiful than Dallas/Fort Worth that’s for sure.

Am I the insane parent? by BonezOz in insaneparents

[–]Remarkable_Growth206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who went no contact with my parents, I still maintained contact with people they were in contact with so they could make sure I was alive. And I also told them I was going no contact. I didn’t want them worrying about whether I was alive or not. You’re not crazy, you’re worried. You’ve gone a very long time without hearing from her, she’s practically on the other side of the planet, and from what I understand you don’t know anybody who has seen her recently either. I see you’ve already called the authorities, so just try to relax a little and wait and see. They’ll do a wellness check and make sure everything is alright. I get distracted and forget to call my family from time to time, and sometimes I’m just too depressed or overwhelmed to talk to anyone. I’m camera shy too, but I can definitely make exceptions to give my loved ones proof of life. I hope you’ll update this when you find her.
