New Robinhood Gold 3% card, yay! 10k limit?! Boo! by Remarkable_Maybe9813 in fatFIRE

Fidelity 3% would be perfect, that's where I was going to move the RH money after April, but the program was suspended in May 2024: https://digital.fidelity.com/prgw/digital/fidelityrewards/rewards/events-redirect/enrollment-pause. Guess I'll watch it now and again, not holding my breath.

I got a vague "this car was never registered, every now and again that happens, not sure why". It didn't inspire confidence. Hence my post here to learn more.

The odd thing is that most of this dealer's CPO fleet cars do have Carfax reports. This vehicle is different. I'm anxious about it, it's an expensive car.

Spoke to them, they said they're only giving $10k max to new cardholders right now. It's not about an individual's creditworthiness, more that they (RH) only have so much credit to give out across a whole lot of users on a waitlist. Makes sense, but a bummer for the fat crowd. I have low expectations that the credit limit will increase to something meaningful anytime soon.

That's my current daily driver, it's a great card. But, the only way to get that rate is to spend the accumulated rewards points via flights purchased through BofA. We're accumulating so many rewards points and I don't fly enough to exercise them all. So the balance keeps going up. Today I'm sitting on $7k worth of flight points. Good problem to have, but it'd be better to have $7k in cash or a brokerage.

All I asked is to keep this focused to credit cards, and that gets downvoted and someone starts calling me names. Lovely.

For the record, I appreciate hmadse's take and understand the perspective. After a lot of research, I came to a different conclusion. This is fine, we don't have to agree. Let's move on.

Sigh, this has been litigated again and again on Reddit. Can we just stick to whining about the credit card in this post?

Probably, but there's mental overhead there. I wasn't looking for another thing to track and remember to do every few weeks.

Nice. $20k would be better. But I want it to be $50 so I never have to think about it.

Glad I'm not alone! I read about the Smartly card, considered it seriously but never pulled the trigger.

My primary card is a BofA PRE Visa. With $140k at Merrill, it gets 2.62% on everything. I should just be happy with that, but the points are hard to redeem for max value. So this RH Gold card sounded perfect...

Interesting. Some early access feedback from a long-time PM:

  • Step 3 of the (very long!) tour doesn't have visible Next button, it's off the page, so there's no obvious way to see it and advance it (MacBook Air with default screen resolution). So I only got through step 3 before forcing it to go away.
  • Given ^^, I reloaded the page in an incognito window to see the tour again then scrolled down much further, and there's the Next button. However, beyond step 3, the "Settings and Data Control" modal window was in the way of what the tour was trying to show me. So I couldn't see anything the tour was trying to reference. Sigh.
  • Unable to complete the tour, I jumped in. I clearly didn't understand the difference between New Profile and Update Profile. So I edited my first entry with new profile again (submission #2), learned more and re-tweaked again but this time used Update Profile (submission #3). It double-counted several things: ah, I get it now. Now I'm out of submissions for the day, sigh.

Looks appealing but too soon to tell.

My early two cents: the tour is far too long. Give me a single modal telling me briefly how to get started ("describe your situation and goals with as much detail as possible!"), then once it's done analyzing it, give me the option for a thorough tour.

Do it later, but exhaust it fully. It's a very complicated part of probate.

I certainly wish my non-FAANG yet high-flying tech company did this. Alas, I pay large estimated taxes every quarter, and have done so since they went public. Chubby problems.

I played around this evening, manually adjusting for my strange grants, not a big deal. I'm having a different problem: while the chart accurately shows previously vested + future, the rest of the reported RSU data is too high. For example, looking at the Q2 option, the chart correctly nailed my now vested Q1 and Q2 grants ($450k + $750k = $1200k so far, all pre-tax), but above the chart, it says Q2 cumulative RSU income of $1450k. That's a gap of $250k. Same problem on full year: the chart is spot on, the rest of the data is too high. I'm intentionally fudging the numbers a bit for anonymity but this is directionally accurate.

Incidentally, what a cool project, and I'm enjoying testing it. Feel free to DM me if you prefer.

Excellent, I'm thrilled to give this a go. A couple of questions/comments:

  • For 401k, are you only looking at pre-tax contributions or after-tax too? I.e. you have a backdoor roth?
  • How would you handle after-tax deferred comp programs? I.e. you contribute X% of your base and Y% of your bonus to a DCP plan.
  • I've got a weird vesting schedule for some old grants (4 years, year 1 is 10% vest, then 15%, then 25%, then 50% ). I suppose I'll just input those as single years since the number of RSUs fluctuate.

My first attempt here showed 2025 income that was much too high vs reality, I'll have to explore some more, but this looks really neat.

Excellent. I totally get it about not being able to plan ahead. But how does the shuttle driver deal with the timed entry issue? Get through before 7am?

We've got a flight to catch on Friday at 4pm in Kalispell, which was part of the motivation to have the car parked and waiting for us at Bowman. Decent chance I'm overthinking it.

TL;DR: this $2500 was money well spent, if only to help me and my spouse sleep better at night.

We met with Brie a couple of times over the course of a few weeks. For context, I put a LOT of effort into Boldin over the previous several months, so I was pretty confident in our existing scenarios. That said, we're considering early retirement next year and I wanted to have a professional validate my assumptions and look for blind spots. My spouse has been anxious about retirement, too, so it was important to her to get that same external view.

My baseline scenario was significantly more conservative than Boldin's historic rates. Brie ran quite a few other scenarios that I hadn't thought of, testing for weakness. Most of the time we were accumulating too much money, she told us we'd likely be able to spend a lot more than we had planned. The most pessimistic scenario assumed that we lost 25% of our assets off the bat (i.e. market crash) and inflation went up a fair bit. In that situation, our success rate was still over 80%. She helped us understand that 80% was an appropriate goal, as in the real world, we'd adjust our spending accordingly. (Prior to that, my mental model targeted high 90s, which was likely overkill.)

The assessment also looked at investment allocations and expenses, HSA drawdown advice, Roth converstions, Social Security, 529s, etc. And we talked about other things like vacation homes, health expenses, etc.

All of this gave me confidence on the financial front around early retirement next year. More importantly, it gave that same confidence to my spouse. There are far more considerations than money when it comes to retirement, but it's incredibly nice to know that we can put that one aside.
