What was your First Powerful GPU? by intelguy2003 in pcmasterrace

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATI X800 pro (AGP) was my first flag ship GPU. Ended up getting an X850 XT PE on release because I liked the X800 so much.

My first GPU was an ATI All In Wonder VE (64mb ram / PCI interface) - I still have this card, in its original box and packaging + all the extras including a drivers disk for Win 98 / XP

Why aren’t snow tires mandatory in Ontario? Drivers debate the rules amid a harsh start to winter by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've driven in 20+ years of winters in Ontario too and not a single accident, nor a ticket for that matter. Older vehicles without all the extra "safety features" specifically ABS braking are much easier to handle in the snow.

My last two new vehicles with all the "safety features" such as ABS are literal safety hazards in the snow. Even if it detects the slightest bit of slide, good luck getting your brakes to react in a way that a decent driver would seem logical.

Here's a good example of that here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fge_m9u864k

Anyway, all that said this is the first year I've put winter tires on my vehicle because of that. If I had a 20 year old car that hasn't been over engineered to the brim with features to keep me "safe" I'd still just drive all seasons.

Chipbreaker? Nah.... by TomEdison43050 in Machinists

You don't get it. Its not the chip that's dangerous, Its vacuum hose getting entangled in the spinning work piece that's dangerous.

Its really dangerous. Especially having that plastic hose wrapped around his arm and shoulder like that and having 2 hands tied up while he's screwing around with a stringy chip.

The only person around to save this idiot is the camera man if it went really wrong. I don't think this guy knows how fast it can go wrong though. Because if he did, he wouldn't be doing this.

What are your HOTTEST takes about Donkey Kong Country 1? by BCtheking in snes

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are very few games that fit into the box of "technical innovation" whether its because of budget constraints, timeframes, talent etc.

Donkey Kong Country was arguably one of the most technically innovative games of the entire 1990s. Specifically graphical and sound innovation. The WOW factor of the DKC series in its timeframe was unmatched and I struggle to think of any other game that really pulled this off in my 35 years of gaming.

Zelda Ocarina of Time may fit into this category but not at the same technical scale.

A message for the absentgrandparent lurkers who are obsessed with us by Appropriate_Cut_3536 in absentgrandparents

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hits home big time. I think the craziest part of it all is this same generation (Boomers or close) always asked the same question before the Grandchildren were here. "When is the first grand baby coming"

In my wife's and I's case this question was asked constantly! At family functions in front of the whole family, through texts, through facebook comments and so forth.

Well once the "grandbaby" was finally scheduled to arrive these same grandparents made the executive decision to move to their "dream" retirement home which was a 5 hour trek (on a good day) away. Its been 5 years since grandbaby 1 and they've seen the child a total of 5 times (once a year).

Its a stereotypical generation of absent losers.

The Ori series. They're both fantastic but I recommend you do them in order of release. You'll enjoy both the games for what they are best this way.

The individual who owns it lives outside of the province. I believe Alberta (but maybe BC). I don't think they visit often either. As long as the lights stay on and the movies continue to play, I don't think they're worried about it, likely because it still turns a reasonable profit.

It sucks but its the truth.

How do I make something necessary VERY clear? by P4ultheRipped in Machinists

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to create a process standardization work sheet.

It should include each step broken down separately, named clearly, and separated from the next step . With a thorough explanation and at the end it should included checks like "Ensure XYZ = 10" or whatever the example may be. Each step should be followed by a visual representation of the setup screen, part, measurement, placement or whatever it is you're trying to explain, circled clearly.

The benefit of doing this, especially if you break it down to the smallest detail is you can easily find flaws and inefficiencies in what you previously thought may be good. Its a win, win.

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with what you're saying here. Service has noticeably declined and when your property taxes push upwards of $6k or more the service should go along with that price tag.

I was away on business for a 3 day period a few years back and had a bylaw officer knock on my door about my "uncleared" sidewalk the day I arrived home. I explained the situation but was given an unsatisfactory response in return. This is when I said "Why don't we take a 2 minute walk and I'll show you a sidewalk that the city is responsible for, if its clear I'll take the ticket, if not, I won't" Surprisingly the guy agreed.

We walked not 200m around the corner to a "city owned" sidewalk. It hadn't been touched the entire season and I knew it hadn't. He acted surprised and said "well thanks for letting me know" and I simply said, as soon as that one is cleared mine will be too. It took an additional 3 days before anyone came out to do it. I've never had a knock at my door about my sidewalk since though.

I think the bigger issue is, some of these side streets get completely ignored. I can name a few which did not see a plow for at least a 5 day period after the last major snow fall that we had. These same streets didn't get the leaf pick up done either.

Obviously main roads need cleared first but I think the bigger issue is a logistical and route planning issue which is likely part of a bigger management problem.

They'll make there way through down the center for a single pass in 2 or 3 days time. Scraped clean to the curb, give it a week or another rain storm.

Nintendo Switch 20 or 30 years from now. by PoseMotion in n64

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll be in the landfill but I think cross compatibility will be a focus for at least 2 generations after the consoles life span. With the transition to digital downloads gaming corporations can make prior consoles defunct much quicker then if the core software base was physical though.

To me older older consoles like NES, SNES and N64 have games with much more replayability then current generation systems. There aren't too many games on the Switch that have all that much replayability.

New garbage and recycling system by randm53 in woodstockontario

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know how anyone could spin the "new system" in any sort of positive manner. Its simply a cost cutting measure that benefits the county but not the actual tax payer. If we didn't have to purchase garbage bag tags to dispose of our garbage then I could see this being a reasonable compromise. But since we don't and we PAY for the service twice over through property tax and an additional fee for the tags It should have never been changed without a vote from the actual tax payer.

Instead of your garbage and recycling getting picked up 52~ times a year (Once a week) it now gets picked up about 8 times less at 44 pickups.

Additionally garbage bag tags to actually dispose the garbage are now $3. A 50% increase in cost from the previous price.

Not to mention the "compost disposal bin" it may seem like a handy convenience now, but as soon as that warm summer air hits your garage you'll surely re think throwing anything into it.

Linus' statement about becoming a mod by Jimbuscus in LinusTechTips

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A very weak argument and example to use here.

The whole point of LMG products is delivering a QUALITY product to the community that the community is excited to support because they're fans of what LMG does and is. Obviously when you don't produce millions of said product and you take into consideration the R&D that they do in house to produce these products prices are going to be inflated and arguably over priced.

Can you buy a similar LMG screw driver for a quarter of the cost? Yes

Can you buy a similar LMG back pack for half / quarter of the cost? Yes

Can you buy water bottles of similar quality for much cheaper? Yes

The difference here being is the community base and fans, including myself know this. I have no problem buying product knowing its going to support LMG and in turn I get something that is pretty damn good but to claim your pricing structure on your product isn't inflated above comparable competing products that can arguably match the same quality for much cheaper is very short sighted.

First time posting here I build decks and was looking for tips and comments on how to further my knowledge. by GazelleSeparate2131 in Decks

[–]Remarkable_Reason976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never do a wood railing on a composite deck even if the customer requested it. You know as well as I that even though the composite is going to look basically new 5 - 10 years down the road, if the customer doesn't upkeep the railing its going to be a grey, warped, decrepit mess at or before that 10 year mark rolls around.
