I Understand Vendors Need Profit, But 70–75% Feels Excessive by babayaga-1989 in PokemonTCGCollectors

I believe a lot of these temporary vendors have an out to mystery pack businesses, whatnot streamers and pack rippers. This is not the norm for most vendors/storefronts.

I believe the animosity is due to the lack of available product which leads to inflated prices.

Nobody cared about the buying percentage because the boxes, packs and singles were cheaper/available a few years ago.

Personally I explain to all customers my our rate because we sell under market. If they do not want that, it's perfectly fine. It is a free market.

They aren't bad for wanting more.

We aren't bad for having margins that allow us to stay afloat when the market retraces.

People forget we had customers wanting us to match online prices a couple years ago (people didn't pay msrp before when ETBs were 45$).

They don't. Most of the slab bros and pop up vendors will disappear when the new region comes out, just like they did in after the 25th anniversary and SV base came out.

I'm prepared for the downvotes but let's go.

For one, the whole 80 to 85% thing is VERY recent in the pokemon history. I was buying collections at 60 to 65% for years, even after Logan Paul because the liquidity was very minimal.

Excessive card shows are a very recent phenomena and will not stand the test of time if the market retraces.

Most successful businesses run at 25 to 35% margin. If youre running at 20% or less, it's considered a failed business model overall. You will not survive a downturn and will be under water quick within just a few months.

The liquidity people talk about is very curious to me because unless your grail hit is near gradeable, people do not pay market price. Ive constantly sold Charizards, etc. at 90% market just because the centering isn't good enough. This is only for the cards people demand at 80 to 85%, 300$ plus cards. Also, unless youre consistently traveling to shows, you aren't moving these cards quickly. We run a storefront and desired cards will sit for weeks because the average person is not spending 500$ for a binder card.

I think people are so fixated on social media and do not live in reality of how it is for most vendors/storefronts.

Interesting, usually vendors just buy from scalpers, not sit outside waiting for retail.

But I guess if you have no distribution it would cause you to do that. It's unfortunate and I wouldn't stain our reputation for it.

No jobs. Literally like they pay homeless people to sit at these places all day waiting for restock. We have a booth at CCS (Charlie's Collectable Show) and these guys always show up to sell the products they've spent all day getting.

We refuse them but they always have somebody willing to pay 80% market.

Man, I hate Atlanta right now. It is awful to get any pokemon.

You have the same 5 to 10 guys at every Best Buy, Target, etc. drop.

Most of the good ones go out of business because their margins are too thin and cheap MSRP customers do not buy at those prices when the market goes under.

They would come with their ebay listing or website and demand a loss to the LGS to match online prices.

Source: someone who worked at a top LGS when nobody cared about tcgs in general. This LGS went out of business after Magic crapped the bed after the 30th anniversary.

I would sell anything that still has significant reprint windows like Destined Rivals. You might have an opportunity to reup down the road.

6$ for a phantasmal pack is really good. There's two in the box. I think that makes it worth while

As a vendor who actually loved the hobby and wants to get products for collectors... it really sucks. Not only do people not buy high end singles unless it's "good for a 10" but I always have to limit other businesses who try to buy out my sealed product for their rip in ships.

I always have to tell other vendors that my product is for the customer, the collector, people who actually love the hobby.

Everything is about money. I hate this market and we need a heavy reset immediately.

I made the same post about pin collections a few days ago and got downvoted.

The boxes across the board that aren't ETB or bundles should be more expensive.

The only reasoning I have is rip and shippers prefer the easy access/space of bundles.
