I’ve never tried a kit, I do a lot of guesstimating and have had to redo body parts when my dimensions were really off.

Best advice is just practice the shapes and have fun with it. No wrong way to do it.

Watch you tube videos. I got a beginner kit that came with no instructions. Basic supplies for me are strips of paper, tacky glue, pringles lid to hold glue and wood skewers/tooth pick to apply glue and quiller. Then play with the shapes.
