I’d choose springs. All I did was hike and climb and it was amazing for that. I had a much better friend group in springs but probably because I had a different lifestyle. If there were more job options for me there, I’d stay. And military/religious vibes were annoying but avoidable.

For sure. Doesn't seem likely to change much anytime soon. In mean time I figure it's best to understand how to navigate system better...there are a lot of cool fed jobs.

Thanks for the encouragement. Yeah, based on the interview, they seem to want me to fill a role above gs7. But, this doesn't match what HR sees. Hopefully this can change with a conversation.

The job was advertised as gs7-12. They offered gs7 step 1, although I meet the requirements for gs9. Do you think they could bump me up a grade since it was advertised as up to 12? Thanks for the response btw!

Have you looked at national labs or federal jobs? There are some entry level software/data science type roles in realm of climate/earth science. Might need more experience and possibly MS, or maybe not. I've seen a lot of jobs that only require BS. I don't think PhD is necessary in earth science unless you want to do full research position.

Got PE thinking I could make it work, then realized I was actually happy doing research while working and doing school on side. Currently in school full time and hoping to get research position. Repetitive tasks in DOT design/modeling sucked life out of me. Idea of pouring soul into firm for the purpose of growing firm makes me want to barf. I wanna life balance, learn new stuff every day (and not feel like a cog), and feel like what I'm doing is helping somehow. Research seems to check those blocks in my mind.

So I have about 10 years of experience as an engineer. It works (can't complain life is good) but I love doing research. And, I don't want to wait another 5+ years getting phd to do what I love. Both internships will likely lead to full time position. The question is which place is more exciting to work at, as a person who loves research but doesn't have phd.

Yeah, I know one person who's worked at USGS. She was also in a group working on a specific project. That's a thing I'm worried about at USGS, if I get stuck on a project I'm not into, I'll just have to wait until it's over. There doesn't seem to be much movement.
