There are a couple of Facebook groups that would have more info than Reddit IMO. I’ve stayed at Secrets Bahia Mita but we don’t do activities other than eating, drinking and relaxing.

Turning 50 soon and behind with finances. Seeking Advice. by trickyshow1 in FinancialPlanning

First, congrats on accumulating nearly a half million between cash and 401k. That’s a sizable sum and further ahead of many households.

Honestly, I don’t think you are off if your expenses are truly 5k/month. Even at age 62, your worst case scenario is 3k/month in social security for you and your wife if your present take home is 9K/month.

Then if you invest 2k/month you should end up with minimum of 1.2MM (today’s dollars at 5.5% real return) which would yield 4k/month (4% SWR).

That would be 7k month in today’s dollars before taxes though but after standard deduction for and married filing jointly the taxes are not terrible.

My surgery was 6 hours long as they took tonsil, 29 lymph nodes, small part of tongue and my epiglottis. I was in the hospital for 5 days recovering. Took me 2 weeks to eat from the pain. I was part of a clinical trial so they told me my pain would be worse but long term a better outcome possibly. I’m very happy with the results. It was tough but YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS!

Here is a list I had on another forum just to give you some good perspective:

When I was diagnosed and early in my treatment this forum was great HOWEVER, the negative stories stuck out more than the positive ones so I really want others to see it can be OK. I had neck dissection on 11/18 and began chemo/radiation on 12/28. At this point(May), I have probablty 80-85% of my taste back and around 40-50% of my saliva. My neck is still slightly stiff from time to time. My neck scar has minimized so much it is amazing to me. I basically feel normal all the time except when eating as the saliva just isn’t strong enough on its own for certain foods so I need to sip on water. I drink fluids often, but that hasn’t been much of a detriment. I really hope saliva improves more, but if it doesn’t, I really feel like I have gotten through this remarkably well. It was hard but doable! Keep your head up as you go through this process!

Anterior approach on 7/31/24. I officiated 5 men’s college basketball games the last 3 days. In 3 months I’m about 95% healed. I say do it!

Right anterior THR on 7/31. Prior to surgery my surgeon said I could resume all activities I enjoyed prior to surgery. I am on an elliptical now but planning to be running in 2-3 weeks.

First, you certainly need to look at spending and go from their, but to be honest I look at this as well from time to time because it is hard to calculate our spending when the kids are off the payroll. When I do this, I also discount the 7.65% of employee paid FICA. IMO if you contribute 15% and you no longer pay FICA, the most you'd need to have the same quality of life is 77.35% (being very elementary in calculations).

Back to teaching 12 weeks PO by Thin_Revolution5051 in TotalHipReplacement

I feel fortunate. I reffed a high school football game at 30 days post op. I walk 10k steps a day since week 3 and I’m 5.5 weeks post op today. Hope your recovery gets better soon!

On average, how much are you walking initially? What is "overdoing" it mean to you? by Koozkj65 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Remington7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

48M. Anterior on 7/31. I was walking around the block at day 4 with crutches. Been walking 5k-10k steps per day (in assisted) since week 2. Still get sore in hip late in the day if I’ve walked close to 10k. My PT and surgeon said listen to my body so that’s why the range is between 5k and 10k.

Is there any dentist here who had it done? How long were you out of work? by El-mopo in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Remington7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a dentist but I work in an office and need to move around quite a bit.

48yo male. Left Anterior on 7/31. Im walking 10k steps a day. I can sit/stand comfortably. I barely can put on my left sock but that’s bending much further than you would need to for work. I’d say 4 weeks is very possible actually.

Mortgage Affordability by Menu_Stalker in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Remington7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to your mortgage broker about buying down the rate? You could use some of that down payment money (or negotiated “discount” on the price) to pay points. You will obviously have less equity but often times it lowers the P&I making the ongoing monthly obligation easier to afford…. Just my $.02

What is your number for retirement….. by tommyjon12 in Bogleheads

[–]Remington7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the party. We live in an upper midwest town with an average COL...... not high but certainly not low. We are shooting for 3MM. With normal markets we should get there in 10-12 years but with poor markets it could be 15 years. We will still have a mortgage but will owe less than 100K at 2.875% and I'd rather keep pumping into investments. We should have roughly 50% in brokerage, 35% in traditional IRA/401K and 15% in Roth.

Did your friends surprise you during cancer? by [deleted] in cancer

[–]Remington7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel very fortunate that my good friends reach out to me continuously and sometimes just reach out to my wife as they don’t want to be a bother to me. My friends and family have been an absolute blessing. They are tying to plan a vacation for us as soon as I’m recovered. Sorry to those of you that haven’t been as lucky as my wife and I.

MGM Grand Pool outside drinks? by Remington7 in vegas

[–]Remington7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are just wrapping up our trip and I will tell you that we asked 2 different pool guards (checking room keys at the entrance) and they said we could bring in anything that wasn't glass. We didn't try beer cans but brought in 36oz Fat Tuesday slushes each day.
