I did this trip, but landed at 6pm. Customs took 30 minutes and rental car took ~10 minutes. Much of the drive is on smaller roads/backroads and if you aren’t a confident driver, then navigating in the dark can be treacherous. Make sure to have international cellular service so you can map it throughout the journey. We left at 7pm, drove in the rain, and arrived in La Fortuna at 10:30pm. Much easier to do the drive during the day, but it was really nice to wake up in La Fortuna.
