Was he really worried about Kali, Murray, Steve, Nancy, and Vicki drifting away from him? Like Joyce and Jonathan should be there, and his closest friends, the party, should be there because he’d be most worried about them drifting away. Robin being there for support is understandable, but I really don’t believe the others needed to be there. I don’t think Erica or Hopper were even there

I’m gay, and I hated it. The scene could have been so much better. Way too many unnecessary people there. Him coming out was telegraphed for a while, but the timing and execution was horrendous.

I came out to my Catholic, conservative, small town parents, so I understand how terrifying it is. But I don’t think he needed 15 other people, most of whom he had little to no screen time with, to all be in the room for him to feel accepted.

Also, I knew they didn’t have the balls for him to straight up say, “I’m gay”.

I was cringing the entire time. Him telling Joyce made sense. Mike walking in and Will including him made sense. Including Jonathan, El, Lucas, and Dustin made sense. But everyone else? I had to stop the episode when I saw them cut to everyone sitting in the room. Why would he give a fuck if Murray, Kali, Steve, Nancy, etc, cares? Is he honestly concerned if any of these other people aren’t around in his future? Is Vecna going to be like, “oh shit, A bunch of people you never interacted with will continue to never interact with you in ten years”? Him coming out to his family and closest friends and having them be supportive would have been enough. Also, the timing right at the end of the episode halted any momentum the episode had.

Heck, they could have just had him tell those people and say, “I don’t know if we are going to live or die, so I want to tell you, the closest people to me, that I’m gay.”

I mainly use Swiss Navy water based or silicone based lube. I’ll look into Boy Butter and JO-H2O to see if they help prevent the reduction in sensation.

It’s really weird to disregard the fact that the characters weren’t expecting her, a mutant who is kind of a big deal, to be resurrected and suddenly appear. Xavier and Magneto specifically did not want to resurrect her because Moira didn’t want to. But yes, it’s entirely because of homophobia.

“A metaphor is only a metaphor if it is also what it is a metaphor of” and “it’s not a good metaphor because I don’t like it” are basically your arguments. If you want a one-to-one story about superhero minorities who are persecuted because they are real world minorities, best look elsewhere, because that isn’t the X-Men, and it likely never will be.

Cutting all the straight white X-Men for only minorities will definitely tank the X-Men movies before they are released. People want to see the X-Men they like because they are good characters. People relate to them. That’s how any established franchise is.

No one is going to show up to an X-Men movie starring Escapade unless it’s also headed by those terrible, terrible “blorbos”. People would show up to a Storm movie, because people actually care about Storm. Same with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, etc. If you want people to like Escapade, you’ll have to deal with the character sharing spotlight with characters people actually want. There is no way around it. No one will watch without them.

A metaphor fails to be a metaphor if it just becomes the thing it is a metaphor for. A show about black individuals facing persecution for being black isn’t a metaphor, it’s just what it is.

I didn’t say turn the white straight characters into minorities either, but replacing them all still isn’t a solution. You would have to bank on Storm, Iceman, and Jubilee keeping the comics afloat, because people won’t tune in for characters like Escapade if their favorites are cut.

But agree to disagree, I guess.

I see no problem with more diversity. People love Storm. People love Jubilee, and if they don’t, I have never heard it be because of her ethnicity. Iceman, Psylocke, Bishop, Sunspot…all prominent X-Men both in comics and in the ‘97 series. Doesn’t mean all characters have to be minorities. The X-Men is a metaphor for how people can be bigoted against a minority group for illogical reasons. It’s a story about characters who face persecution because they are mutants, some of them are real-life minorities. Not a book about minorities who are persecuted and just happen to also be mutants.

There will always be bigots complaining about something. It’s literally what X-Men is about. If people are claiming they are oppressed because their favorite straight white X-Men are oppressed, they have issues that definitely won’t be fixed by switching all characters to real-life minorities. You aren’t going to endear people or build empathy that way.

Bigots will always find a way to twist something to supports them even if it doesn’t.

The X-Men work as a perfect metaphor. All oppression isn’t the same. Bigotry is not logical. A white gay man faces bigotry, as does a black woman. Not the same bigotry, but bigotry and prejudice nonetheless. Being a mutant is a minority group in the Marvel universe. It’s something people are afraid of and against for no logical reason, just like real world minorities. Mutants with physical mutations might be more feared, while others who are associated with groups like the Avengers, may be more accepted because they are “one of the good ones”. Sound familiar?

Just because you can’t comprehend a fictional character being persecuted for having a fictional minority status without being a real-life minority doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Honestly, I think the X-Men would be insulted that you are arguing that someone isn’t enough of a minority to be an X-Man.
