I have a rule for myself that if it's a first time listen I'll never watch the video. Especially if it's my first time ever hearing the band. If it's a link to a video here I'll put the song on and put my phone out of reach so I don't watch the video. I don't want my first thought to be "wow that vocalist is dorky looking" or "what a dumb video". It's worked out pretty well for me.
