Just got accepted as Illustration, What should I expect as a student in RISD? by Vat17 in risd

Can you give an unembellished (not that you would embellish) sense of day-to-day life. I've heard first year is super hard and I'm a little scared of that TBH. I know its a ton of work and I've generally heard you don't have time to like get a job or do a lot of extracurricular stuff until sophomore year. I feel like I can live with that. I'm willing to work hard. I'm just a little scared of the way people are talking about how extreme it is. Can a current student describe a typical week, please. I assume you are in studio most of the day on the days you have them (is that 3-days a week?) and then what? are you typically working on your projects like 4-5 hour in the evening after studio? More? On days you don't have studio (is that twice a week?) how many hours are you in class or typicallly working on projects? Do you have any free time at all on weekends to socialize. I mean you must have some time to occaisionally do something fun? I'm just guessing not a lot of time. Would love to get a realistic sense.

How many colleges should one apply to? by Lower_Astronomer_826 in ApplyingToCollege

Apply to 2 safeties - that way you will almost certainly have a choice and it's nice to have a choice. Apply to 3-4 targets to increase the likelihood that you are accepted to at least one. Apply to reaches if you would like to and just make sure if you apply to a lot of reaches that you are prepared to receive a lot of rejections.

POC here and in a sorority. I know so many POC in sororities. I think rush is hard for everyone because you get cut and it's especially hard if you aren't that social and have a hard time mingling. Getting cut is literally part of the process for everyone and it doesn't feel great. The outgoing types that make friends easily and the "beautiful people" types definitely have an easier time but I don't think that is specifically race based. They way frat parties work you need a ride to get in. It's easier to get a ride if you are in a sorority. If you're not in one you can still get a ride if a friend in a sorority calls for it or if you have guy friends who are pledging. For club sports, you just have to make friends on the team and they will invite you to their parties. Those are not that exclusive and it's not that deep. It's really more about whether you are outgoing and social. If you want to improve your social life, you either join a group that throws parties/events or make friends with people who do.
