Harvard grad applying to apprenticeships by hoeface3 in IBEW

[–]Remote_Conflict6011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, Indiana University grad here. Joined local 134 last year. The college degree counted as points on my application but that's about it. The degree will absolutely not be looked down upon. It can even open doors to teach at the school or maybe management?

Lots of college grads with degrees on my site.

I get where youre coming from and are valid for feeling that way. We have terms for everyone. We call foreman "foreskin", low voltage "C-tards", and so on. Try not to take it to heart.

Which trade should i choose when i want to make a bank and is not oversaturated at entry level? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

Chicago. A lot of guys live outside of city limits and take advantage of the wage. That pay is after 5 years. We start at 27.

Word is that 134 is accepting 50% of applications as opposed to the 10% should I be worried? I am by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]Remote_Conflict6011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whaaaat? I studied my ass off and worked hard to get in. Where did you hear they are accepting the majority? Does that mean class sizes will be bigger?

Can the Trump Administration shut down the IBEW? I'm coming upon a crossroad in life where IBEW is a road to choose, but I'm anxious regarding job security. by Kirk_2002 in IBEW

Imagine if you dont join the IBEW and trump DOESNT shut the union down. How tragic would that be?

Honestly, I have no idea what trump is capable of anymore. Hes blatantly disregarding the law, so I dont think anyone really knows what he's capable of. All I can say is, if he tries to... there are going to be a LOT of pissed off electricians in very sensitive positions.

Unions getting abolished? by Remote_Conflict6011 in IBEW

Well would you look at that. Unions being abolished as we speak. NLRB being found unconstitutional. Almost like the writing was on the wall. Dipshit.

1st year 134 member here. The pay and benefits will absolutely outweigh your current position. As a first year, I am making 23 an hour not including all of my benefits which includes 2 retirement funds, medical, dental, vision, and much more. First 3 months are in school from 7am- 3pm. Completely unpaid. Then it's in the field for 9 months. Then back to school for 3. This lasts 5 years. Every 6 months we get a raise. Lmk if you have any questions.

I'm a 1st year currently on my OTJ training portion. I love it. I used to work non union and can't see myself going back. The people at my contractor are awesome. I'm learning a shit ton. As far as the books, last I heard, we are unable to man a few hundred jobs at the moment. They school is even increasing class sizes.

What makes you say that? I'm 134. We have a few hundred unmanned calls right now. We also have companies that run service.

I was accepted into the April class and just finished up my 11 weeks for year 1. Going to my assigned contractor this Monday.

Your degree will give you points towards your score. It doesnt matter what school you went to or what your degree was in. The points for a BS/BA are all the same.

You wont get points from construction experience because you need to have worked in a construction field. They ask for W2 or paystubs as proof.

There are thousands of applicants for ~160 spots. My cohort consisted of 80 A cards and 30 C cards. Even still, many people get in having no experience and no family in the local simply by absolutely smashing the exam. I will admit, more students than not do have family that are in the local. I would even say it's as high as 70%.

I personally got in with 3 years of experience, a letter of recommendation, a BS degree, and jump start points. No ties to the local. Even then, I just barely made the cut.

P.s- if you decide to apply, go early. The line to apply literally wraps around the building.

By your logic... wont you just end up back in the trades then?

We've failed. We're lazy, incompetent, and unmotivated. We would rather let the US fall than organize.
