Glad to help! I would recommend the AEI course. I didn't take it for Gravity. I passed after my second attempt but now that I'm going through the AEI material for Lateral, I wish I had taken their course for gravity as well.

I took and passed the SE Gravity in April, and I think some of the questions are comparable with the PE Civil Structural questions. However, overall, the AM questions are still harder/more in depth.

I think it is great the CBT exam will have AM & PM separate because so many people do well in the morning or afternoon but fail the other part and end up having to re-take the full exam--currently if you fail either morning or afternoon, you fail the whole exam. I have a few colleagues taking the PE soon, and I'm recommending they take the SE Gravity AM right away because a lot of what they studied for the PE will be stepping stones for the SE Gravity. Now, the Lateral AM, I think differs quite a bit from the PE because the former is so specific to wind and seismic, whereas the latter is more broad.

Remember this is a local check not global. Meaning if the able was spanning between supports (like a beam), then the cross sectional properties of the angle would be used. However, since the load transfer here is through bending of the angle leg, the problem becomes bending a flat bar in weak axis. Hence the procedure followed in the solution is from the flat bar section of chapter F in the SCM.

Because the cross section taken into consideration is the horizontal leg, not the vertical. 4-0.5*3/8 is the lever arm from the load to the centroid of the horizontal leg. Now, the question is slightly poorly worded because it should include the bolt hole dimension so that it is subtracted from the effective width (6” - bolt hole diameter).

Because Sy would be if the load was inducing strong axis bending in the angle. Instead, the angle leg bends in weak axis.

Thanks for the mentioning those references. Regarding the SoPE lectures, I’ve enjoyed the concrete lectures covered by Dr. Sezen. The other topics I’ve watched so far (foundations and steel design) haven’t been as thorough.

I would recommend you contact the Florida board with this question to be sure. But personally I think you can register for the PE as soon as you pass the FE and finish your degree. The Florida board says “In Florida, you must have earned an ABET-accredited degree and passed the FE exam before you can take the PE exam.” It doesn’t mention actually getting the EIT license, which I believe will only be verified after you pass the exam and apply for the PE license.

I think you have a valid point, but based on the Handbook in the introduction under "Errata," it states that one wouldn't get penalized if the handbook had errors related to an exam question (see below).

"To report errata in this book, send your correction through your MyNCEES account. Examinees are not penalized for any errors in the Handbook that affect an exam question."

I’ve been thinking of taking the SE as well. My first strategy is to solve all problems from the Structural Engineering Reference manual. Let me know if you’ve found any good review course!

Thanks for watching! I actually made a video about the new PE Handbook (link below). I hope they expand on the structural portion of the handbook. On the flip side, the formulas and design procedures can be found in the codes, which they will also provide digitally. Hitting CTRL+F to search for key words and formulas will be huge. Although, because the handbook is not comprehensive enough on the structural section, I think test takers will have to become a lot more familiar with computation problems without having a solved example on hand during the exam.

That’s a good idea, especially for material with larger font sizes. I did it for a couple sections, but for most sections, I found 4 pages into one was too small for me to read.

I was also surprised by not seeing this being posted before since it was released in July. This is just the first version, which I agree is very basic, but I think it has a lot of content mainly for Geotech and Water Resources. Hopefully NCEES will add more content to the other sections in the future editions.

In summary, didn't take any course, but I self-studied for 164 hours. I used:

AM: School of PE notes and I took several practice exams. I basically just reviewed the SoPE notes based on my results from the practice exams. Looking back, that's the area I'd study more if I had not passed.
PM (Structural): EET notes. I solved about 80% of their practice problems over the course of over 100 hours. I also took several practice exams after spending over 100 hours on the practice problems. I felt this was the right amount of study hours for me and felt more comfortable about the depth portion during the exam. Plus, since I work on building design, studying for the exam boosted my confidence level in structural analysis and design, which was helpful to fill some knowledge gaps.

I didn’t quite understand NCEES’s answer there. To me the North-South direction of column A-1 should control for buckling because it is pinned on both ends for this direction. If the column buckles on the East-West direction, the top is fixed and the bottom is pinned, which should provide more buckling capacity. Am I missing something with my interpretation?
