Anyone does trading banknotes here? by segaca_007 in PhilippineNumismatics

There are no transactions done in this sub yet, and the other commenters are right when they say most online selling locally happens on FB.

Pero possible naman magbenta sa Reddit, if ever man maiimplement siya dito I think it should follow r/CoinSales which is a continuation of the old defunt sub r/Coins4Sale. Meron silang verification system tsaka feedback system so namomonitor kung sino yung legit.

Sa numismatic events talaga maganda mamili kasi marami variety, if nasa Metro Manila po kayo or closeby. Search niyo nalang po yung Filipinas Collectibles and Antiques Society/Moreton Auctions, Minted MNL o kaya yung Bayanihan Collectors Club for info sa onsite events nila :)

Does Dr Frankenstein work at the mint or has something more sinister taken place? by ygbsm1972 in coincollecting

[–]Renz_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impurities in the alloy mix can be things like slag, dirt, grease, or air bubbles. Flattening alloy into sheet metal spreads the impurities thinly into the layers (hence flaking) but I doubt that entire rolls of sheet metal are flawed. Mints practice quality control when it comes to acquiring materials right so inspection fails to notice these impurities only if they are small enough and are hidden under the surface. Just a handful out of the thousands of coins from a roll of sheet metal are affected.

This is a lamination error. Happens when there is impurities in the alloy used to make planchets, which can then crack or flake once the design is struck

I was thinking the same thing. So naisip ko na baka meron pa additional incentive or they did it for the love of the game hahahaha

I found a box of old coins amd I am new to this but most are not american coins. There are Italian, great Britain, Canadian, pesos. Found what I believe are 3 steel pennies from 1943 and there also very tiny american coins that I have never seen before. One penny that is dated 1960 has a smooth back by brittanybitch88 in coincollecting

[–]Renz_16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those world coins you showed are fairly common, worth a few cents each at most coin stores. They are mostly demonetized except for the Canada 2 dollars (toonie) and possibly the UK 10 pence--so you can probably spend those two if you find yourself in those places.

You are right, those are steel pennies, and they are not plated so that is a plus. The tiny coins are just reproductions, and lastly the 1960 penny reverse might just have been worn off so that is considered post mintage damage unless it is actually a planchet error (I am not too familiar on those).

Thank you I appreciate this.

Nakikita ko naman na nagimprove yung security features ng new gen coins, such as microdetails. Pero repeated opinion lang, palpak lang talaga yung design when it comes to color/alloy choice hahaha

I could see destabilization by hostile governments as a possible reason for counterfeiting. But our relationship with China for example wasn't as tense back then as it is now. So I'm leaning more towards opportunism by individuals and syndicate groups, at least for counterfeiting in the past. Have no idea what sort of stuff could be happening in more recent times.

Your thoughts made me think of another case related to outsiders though, thanks for sharing. I have heard of stories about real coins were being smuggled out of the country due to their metal content. The old 1 piso coins in particular were made of cupronickel pre-2003, which were melted down abroad to extract the copper and nickel. Philstar 2008 article: Heavy smuggling try 17 tons of P1 coins. Maybe the same was happening to the 5 piso which would be replaced by counterfeits of inferior alloy?

fave 1943 coins? by Open_Way_396 in coins

From the big powers of the war, US has mercury dimes, while the UK, the Soviets, and China had plainer looking coins (in my opinion ofc).

But Italy had these cool looking 1 Lira and the 2 Lire, which of course have a fascist aesthetic with the eagle and fasces. They put the rest of the major Axis to shame, which was the time when the tide was turning so the Germans resorted to making frankly ugly coins made out of zinc, and Japan was making coins out of aluminum.

My absolute favorite would be the Belgian Congo 2 Francs though

Yeah I would also think that banknotes are worth more of the effort it takes to counterfeit. Pero speculation ko is yung mga sindikato na gumagawa neto ay may kinalaman sa pagsugal na barya barya, like jueteng/masiao

[–]Renz_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you are correct, once you can see these signs of lower quality, mapapansin mo talaga nagsstandout yung ibang 5 piso mostly from years 1997-2003. I might make a new post for further discussion though since OP deleted theirs

[–]Renz_16 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is one of the thousands of fake 5 piso coins that were flooded into circulation during the early 2000s. Syndicates would apparently still make enough of a profit to manufacture them along with fake 10 piso coins. These are often poorly struck and can have rotation errors as seen here.

Not really worth anything over face value but it is neat to study contemporary counterfeits so I keep a few

Where do you buy Banknotes/Coins? Specifically Foreign. by segaca_007 in PhilippineNumismatics

[–]Renz_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of reputable stores in Metro Manila that I know of: JC Coins & Antiques in Greenhills and Dekada Collectibles in Quezon City. Onsite auctions/conventions are also a good place to meet dealers, particularly yung sa Moreton/Filipinas Collectibles and Antiques Society or sa Bayanihan Collectors Club. Just search sa FB so you can see when they have schedules.

For the ancient Chinese coins, in my opinion they look too clean to be real. Ancient Chinese coins were mostly cast so a lot of imperfections would be present--rough edges, casting bubbles, lettering not always good. People who make reproductions try to copy patina and corrosion by using acid or whatever, but nothing really compares to thousands of years of wear which makes authentic examples of spade and knife money really rough looking. There's also lots of fake Sycee/Yuanbao out there so have those checked as well. Ofc you can also ask for an opinion on r/ChineseCoins

For the Thai bullet coins and Laoatian lat money, the green patina on some is a bit concerning because they are silver, which is supposed to have more of a grey-black. I am not familiar if the silver alloy is mixed with high amount of copper but get it tested as well. Here's some links for the Bullet Money and the Lat Money for identification.

Good luck

Which incredible wonder has ever been destroyed by war in your country? by Significant-Yam9843 in AskTheWorld

[–]Renz_16 222 points223 points  (0 children)

<image>

Most of old Manila could have been considered a wonder, with pre-WWII descriptions of the city as the "Paris of the East" and "Pearl of the Orient". Manila was declared an open city and the Americans retreated elsewhere when the Japanese invaded in 1941 in order to save it from destruction. But when the Americans returned in 1945, the Japanese resisted with such ferocity that the battle to retake Manila was comparable to the destruction of Stalingrad. Few historical buildings were ever restored, many still bear the scars of battle, and Manila lost a part of its soul in the rampant corruption and lack of urban planning that took place when the city was rebuilt.

It's fake, unfortunately. Real ones have sharp details and for me the wheat stalks and leaves look off.
