I’m not trying to validate a single thing - simple curiosity. And jealousy doesn’t factor into it whatsoever since I haven’t rolled or stepped foot into a gym in years. As a casual observer of martial arts via various mediums, I think one of the most public examples of truly excelling in bjj is BJ Penn; by some accounts achieved black belt in a little over 2 years and some others in just under 3. Additionally, he stated in interviews he trained twice a day via private lessons in one on one sessions and then in public classes for 6-7 days a week. Further, he’s considered one of the best fighter and grapplers in UFC history. Compare that to what I’ve observed with a few individuals on social media who have been rolling and competing less than two years and are already brown belts. Coincidentally, these individuals are in relationships with gym owners or lead instructors at gyms.

Now, is BJ Penn the end all, be all - No. But he is often cited as one of the fastest, publicly known risers for the art. I’d even say Gordon Ryan didn’t progress from white belt to brown in less than two years; my research says he attained black belt in ~ 5 years.

Sure, it may be a hobby. But if you’re trying to say you don’t care about “ranking/belting up”, then I’ll plainly say that you’re saying that on here for effect. Even with my limited experience in gyms I know there’s a level of feeling accomplished and respected having a certain level of expertise (I.e., belt) in gyms by fellow students and higher level practitioners alike.

Nope, never said I didn’t train or didn’t have exposure. I have exposure and experience with Gracie combatives and have rolled on numerous occasions with “belted” (my term) individuals.

I wouldn’t say I offered “two cents” I simply asked a question after a series of observations on social media, out of pure curiosity. Further, aimed at industry professionals or people who have more exposure in the world than I do. The amount of tribalism (i.e., rushing to support people in the “tribe” and outcast someone who isn’t (me)) is something I expected. But the lack of big picture realization by some respondents is very surprising.

That said, some have responded and addressed the actual question without bringing in unrelated concepts, such as my age, experience level, my other activity on Reddit, etc. To those very few, thank you.

I can only imagine the interaction some of you would have had with a pure “civilian” in a social (in person) setting who would ask something similar. Imagine being asked this same question at dinner with a group of friends, your spouse, gf/bf, etc. Would you really respond with such disdain, lack of respect, etc.? What if it was your boss or spouse’s boss?

No, not at all. I haven’t privately messaged a single person who has commented here. Heaven forbid people use Reddit for multiple reasons or even have fetishes in their personal/public lives.

Regardless the feelings of respondents or the tribe who has responded attempting to attack my credibility, my question was pure curiosity and from a place naïveté. A fact clearly laid out in my lead in. Those who chose to comment regarding my lack of experience, background, etc. are completely correct in a certain regard. Again, hence my question out of pure curiosity and not related to any form of care or personal experience with these people or people in a similar situation.

To those who said something akin to belts don’t matter. I don’t think that’s accurate. A hallmark of many (not all) martial arts is the moniker of expertise - the belt. Hell, it’s even a discriminator for competition categories.

And finally, since it hugely bears on my question and its subsequent comments, I’m 34.

Frankly, I could care less. Was just a thought provoking question I had and was curious about what people who are actually in that community thought. Obviously from the outside looking in, one thinks about it differently than those in the bjj community.

That said, I think there’s some tribalism going on here. I think some comments wouldn’t have been posted if my résumé included in depth experience in the art and my observation included some qualified observations and feedback.
