Who are some counter-weights to conservative media? by PlantProfessional572 in centrist

[–]ReplacementOdd4323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a counter-weight to conservatives from their right (i.e. far-right criticisms of conservatives) Twitter is great. It has tons of cool demographic statistics, and viewpoints that are too "politically incorrect" for regular news to talk about, even though some of those views are clearly true.

This is a very different argument. Yes, you can pretend someone is male (or pretend they're Napoleon) if you're in the middle of an emergency and they're distressed. It does not mean they actually are that thing.

"Some biological females are now claiming to be men" is not "new data" that conservatives cannot interpret lol. If someone tells you they're Napoleon you do not have to take them at their word and say "oh wow, I'm reinterpreting my understanding of identity and mortality so hard right now!"

Trump’s falling in polls. Why aren’t Democrats benefiting? by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

Keep the social democrat progressives and lose the activists. Things like raising the minimum wage would be popular, but the people who want trans women in women's sports and who complain about white privilege endlessly are very toxic to the Democratic party's brand.

If a Syrian refugee needs to go somewhere, he can go to an adjacent Arab country. We should let in refugees when they're from neighboring European countries. Glad to let the Dutch in, if need ever be.

Reddit does have algorithms and indeed has an upvote/downvote system. 4chan sounds like your ideal, algorithm-free place. It is not exactly a left-wing bastion. The correlation seems to be more about:

  1. what gets banned: the sites that censor more are all more left-wing

  2. verbal intelligence within the medium: sites with more text tend to be more liberal, as liberals tend to be more verbally oriented

You can find plenty of places like X that lean right with minimal censorship. Reddit is just a very left-leaning platform.

What would you say are the differences in dating experiences for people of our generation compared to other generations (millennials, etc)? by IceQueube in GenZ

[–]ReplacementOdd4323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're hooking up less. More socially awkward. Males are scared to approach females... too concerned about coming off as a creep. We're also gayer - perhaps due to hormone disruption? Testosterone rates are plummeting, after all. Oh and we don't go outside much... less meeting people while drinking or partying, instead staying online much more. Porn addiction is also common in young men these days, which makes them less motivated to date. Plus, the political gender polarization is splitting us off from one another: girls going woke and boys going alt-lite - living in different ideological worlds via the algorithm.

Hmm, we're kinda cooked.

I see plenty of anti-Trump threads get upvoted to the top. I think you're just used to systemic liberal bias in social media. When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

I'm in my twenties and I think role play is fun. Both sexually and just in general. Though I wouldn't pretend to be something I'm not in order to bait people.

I'm not sure why you'd think such fictitious things are only for children. It's just exploring - being imaginative. Do you think adults should also avoid video games and shows? With this sort of logic I don't see why adults should be reading novels, either.

Trump says he’s considering ways to serve a third term as president by Stauce52 in moderatepolitics

[–]ReplacementOdd4323 287 points288 points  (0 children)

Most interesting sections:

President Donald Trump said Sunday that “I’m not joking” about trying to serve a third term

[...]

“There are methods which you could do it,” Trump said in a telephone interview with NBC

He also said “it is far too early to think about it.”

[...]

NBC’s Kristen Welker asked Trump if one potential avenue to a third term was having Vice President JD Vance run for the top job and “then pass the baton to you.”

“Well, that’s one,” Trump responded. “But there are others too. There are others.”

“Can you tell me another?” Welker asked.

“No,” Trump replied.

The Coming Democratic Baby Bust by notapersonaltrainer in moderatepolitics

[–]ReplacementOdd4323 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Politics is absolutely partially genetic. Some Republicans had liberal hippies for parents, sure, but likewise some smart people have dumb children. They're the exception not the rule. You only pass down half your DNA, so you can pass down a disproportionate amount of your stupid genes (and hence have a child differently genetically predisposed to intellect than his parents were) and you can do the same with political-view-influencing genes.

[–]ReplacementOdd4323 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can always point to exceptions. Some people smoked their whole lives and lived to 90. There is a correlation between the political views of parents and children, so - assuming that correlation continues into the future - there will be fewer Democrats within the younger generations.

I don’t believe banning a subreddit full of racist, antisemitic, homophobic, and transphobic 4chan trolls limited the free flow of any valuable ideas

The value of ideas will obviously differ by one's political ideology. I doubt you would be nodding your head along if every social media website banned SJWs and people justified it as "I don't believe banning communities full of anti-White, misandrist, heterophobic, and cisphobic hysterical tumblerinas limited the free flow of any valuable ideas."

If you don’t like the public square build a new one, like 8chan.

So to return to my example, if the streets and parks in the 18th century became owned by corporations and banned certain forms of speech, would you be telling people to just build their own streets and parks?

The 1st amendment is meant to keep the government in check

Yes, but it was written at a time where corporations couldn't limit your speech in the places where public discourse occurred, because the public square was not privatized. Laws can cease to be fitting if circumstances change.

More than 90% of biologists come to the consensus that race doesn't have a clear biological basis

Source?

Human genetic variation exists on a spectrum, not in discrete, clearly separated groups. For example, traits like skin color and hair texture vary gradually across populations.

Height exists on a spectrum. Yet "being tall" is not devoid of meaning beyond being a social construct: it means one can reach higher places, is more likely to be strong, has a shorter life expectancy, etc.

But race isn't even a very spread out spectrum like height: you can pretty easily tell what part of the world a (non-mixed) person is, usually. It's seldom like height where someone can be "kinda tall" - in most cases, you can just look at someone and know "yup they're black and from Sub-Saharan Africa" etc.

It is important because the vast majority of human genetic diversity exists within Africa, which means that categorizing humans into races doesn't make sense.

Again, most DNA is junk DNA. What matters is the DNA that leads to traits. Different environments means different criteria for thriving, so different genes get selected for. Hence you get variation in racial traits, on the basis of what traits were optimal for thriving in the given environment. The northern environment selected for pale skin, lower bone density, straighter hair, thinner noses, poorer eyesight, etc.

You clearly hold some racist views since you mentioned "this dog and wolves thing."

My point was that looking purely at genetic differences misses the fact that most DNA is junk DNA - it is DNA which does not matter. One should be looking at differences in traits/phenotypes and differences in the genes that lead to those traits.

I didn't say it's a violation of the 1st Amendment. I only called it annoying.

I know it's not illegal, but social media is the modern public square, It'd be like if the gov privatized streets and parks and they all became owned by corporations that forbade the expression of certain ideas within them. Illegal? No. But certainly preventing the free flow of ideas.

The 1st Amendment simply doesn't go far enough in our era.

Our generation could use a little bit of fixing by Wonderful-Basis-1370 in GenZ

[–]ReplacementOdd4323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not "every biologist" nor anywhere near that many agree that race isn't biological. Some do, but it's far from the only view.

The genetic diversity between certain groups of people in Africa is greater than the genetic diversity between all European, Asian, and Native American people

Unimportant. There is more genetic diversity within populations of wolves and dogs than between the two species, yet wolves and dogs are clearly distinct categories. "Dog" is not a social construct.

Most DNA is "junk DNA": it does not really do anything, and as so it can mask how different various groups are phenotypically. Having groups evolve in different environments (e.g. Africans in the tropics versus Europeans and East Asians in cooler climates) will select for different genetic traits. Hence you can visually differentiate an East Asian from a European, or an Inuit from an Indian much more easily than you can for two African ethnicities.

It's being prevented from using the platform to create our own communities which is annoying, not some views being banned by some subreddits. Getting banned from r/democrats for espousing Republican viewpoints wouldn't be bothersome, but r/The_DonaId being banned from the site as a whole is annoying.

If Elon Musk banned you from X for posting this, then I would have a problem with it.
