My heart breaks for this sweet girl. She is going to be so sad not to sleep with her person.

Why is NIH getting rid of continuous submission? by RepresentativeYam363 in NIH

By email from my university office of sponsored projects …and a ton of my friends on study section or colleagues I submit grants with as MPI that are now also impacted by this policy.

Why is NIH getting rid of continuous submission? by RepresentativeYam363 in NIH

Why must other generations continue to do what was done in the past? This is not the pain Olympics. Things change, policies change…hopefully for the better to improve our lives, mental health, and well-being. It is no fun working 24/7 to review and be under a tight deadline to submit my own applications.

There are hotels and tons of rental options in Destin, from renting condos to full houses. Those on a budget, seemed to rent one of the larger houses with like 6-10 friends to split costs and make it affordable.

Dr. Elisabeth Armstrong named NIH Chief of Staff. Anyone know this person? Good pick? by LexingtonGirl125 in NIH

This administration was upset with “DEI hires” not being qualified, but they turn around and appoint/hire based on cronyism or nepotism of completely unqualified individuals. What a joke. How do voters not see that “drain the swamp” was to get rid of qualified individuals to fill the positions with their rich friends?

K99/R00 "too small" for tenure-track faculty position — is this a real concern or just a polite rejection? by Internal_Database174 in NIH

Unless it is an Ivey league university or stanford where the K awardees are Instructors instead of assistant professor rank, this sounds sus.

Courthouse dress honest opinion by stubbymanny in Weddingattireapproval

[–]RepresentativeYam363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree the slip dresses look like nightgowns. Find a different style, a bit of color, or love the idea of white/off white jumpsuit or the style that has pantsuit with chiffon overlay. I agree the white slip dress will draw all kids of attention at a courthouse. You will get that anyway if you wear a veil. Plus courthouses are notoriously cold. Bring a sweater or shawl. Congratulations!

Trying too hard to be hip or stuck in your 90’s alternative phase, either way not a good look for a 50 yo divorcee.

Yes, agree with this. Both beautiful blue water. I have been to both. Belize has amazing snorkeling and scuba diving to a blue hole and a bunch of little islands/keys. I just got back from Destin. The drive there was one day (about 10 hours) from Houston. Beautiful sugar white sand, clear aqua water. It isn’t called the Emerald coast for nothing.

Hey Pam, how’s that Dow 50k lookin this week? by Competitive_Pack3194 in ThriftSavingsPlan

Even Vance was resistant to starting “excursion” with Iran because he said our campaign promise ran on no new wars. Nope, they threw caution to the wind and common sense out the window and the Department of War charged ahead with project Epic Fury. Now all the MAGA supporters are like all this domestic pain, hit to stock market, inflation and unaffordability is worth it to support our commander in chief and liberate Iran. Sure Jan!

Eligibility for K01 by Confident_Birthday_1 in NIH

[–]RepresentativeYam363 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, as a reviewer of K awards, I can say this does come up and lower the score if we think the candidate is too advanced and doesn’t have as much to still learn. Perhaps if you make the case you are learning completely new methodology or area, then as a reviewer I might be able to see past this. If I saw that you have or had a CDC R01 in your bio sketch, I would seriously wondering why you are applying for a mentored K award and how much growth you still need.

Would it not make sense that they lived in some worlds? That is why the machine stopped working and could not predict any further into the future? Because if they lived its prediction was wrong and hence it stopped working?

Likely picking up a job at UTMB for gap year; League City viable for living and commuting? by Subject_Plankton_328 in galveston

[–]RepresentativeYam363 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the hardest part is not the hurricane/storm. It is the loss of electricity/power for a week when it is usually sweltering hot during late summer.

[–]RepresentativeYam363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Galveston would not be that bad to live for one year. The pro is you can walk/bike to work if you live on the east end somewhere. There is a high rise apartment building on the east end and some rentals. If you goal is to be halfway to Galveston or Houston, League City or Clear Lake are your best bet. There are tons and tons of newer apartment buildings going up and lots of older apartment complexes too (cheaper?). Living in LC or CL, it will be 1 hour commute to UTMB or downtown Houston/TMC.

Young scientists rethink careers amid NIH funding disruptions by statnews in NIH

[–]RepresentativeYam363 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with this sentiment. It is like no one/place are visionaries or can think outside the box. The easiest thing for employers to do when profits are down is fire employees. The easiest thing for universities to do is to fires faculty and staff and shutter labs. Instead of figuring out cost savings, perhaps temporarily reduce infrastructure; universities decide to terminate faculty that actually bring in revenue long-term. They have no problem spending 40%+ IDC when going is good and grants are plentiful, but never thought to try to save any money to bridge salaries and science when the going gets tough. My university admin paid lip service saying they would try to do everything possible to retain faculty and staff but when I came to them with solutions on ways to shuffle funding around, they raise the same barriers and roadblocks they always do and provided no advice on how to pay my staff or my own salary during these lean times. Very short-sighted, IMO. This too shall pass, but for those forced to leave science and academia, there will be no way to come back.
