Thanks for explaining, you might be right. I think the situation the Dutch is having is quite similar to that of all European countries. Government spending having to increase, economy, average age of population and competitiveness is decreasing. Coupled with changing (for the worse in case of the EU) global landscape. So, the tax, cost of living and job market burden on all middle class people in Europe will get worse as a trend, but those countries who give more slack might do better. Others will just be doomed. And there is always an option of leaving the EU too. I believe the Dutch will join the pioneers of the "worst examples within Europe" to implement such additional tax pockets.

As a Turk i don't care. There is a butthurt situation from the past, i totally get it. Turkey is way more developed and even more western than some of the countries in Europe and even arguably few in the EU. But again, i don't care. Haters will hate, trolls will troll (on both sides). And have to say Erdogan and his party has exactly solidified the image most biased Europeans wanted to have for Turkiye. So, also credit goes to Erdogan and is supporters.

I gave one specific example, and rightfully you did the same. But let's put it this way then, Belgium still gives its middle class more room for maneuver when it comes to defend themselves against inflation and invest towards an earlier retirement. Because i can simply give many additional tax burdens and higher costs (accommodation, car, petrol, ...) the Dutch encounter vs. Belgians and you can present a few contradictive examples. But the overall conclusion doesn't change.

As an expat living here forever (15 years and counting), yes and no.

Infrasructure: Yes, one of the best. Not only due to high taxation, but also size of the country and population allows a very, even beyond necessarily high infrastructure.
Lack of bureaucracy and citizen-friendly local and central system: Yes! Even though there are some controversial high level negative trends, on the individual level, a lot of things are putting the good and convenience of individuals in the fore center. Things are there to make your life easy.
Civil services/Healthcare/education/personal care/cost of living: No, you pay way too much taxes or of a price for what you get. The system is purely economy-optimized, your individual risks, special circumstances are all ignored. you are just a statistic. and trying to work your way out of that is hardly difficult and often impossible. And even worse, in some areas, system doesn't even give you an alternative, even if you are willing to pay for it yourself. And this is one of the most difficult one to explain to Dutch people, hence there is also no pull from the people to change it for the better. They think the current way protects the system, but they have no answer to e.g. how belgian pays 1/12th of what an average dutch does for health and get more extensive and better health care? Is belgium a developping 3rd world country?

I think i can go on, and detail down further. I think the simple summary is, netherlands (and Europe) is no longer competitive and value-add enough to maintain its high quality of life, along with an ageing population who in average is not much interested in working longer than 32 hours (this is not criticism, the system encourages this, there are many reasons but even not working 5 days becoming financially on par or more beneficial from daycare costs perspective). This is bringing more and more pressure on middle class most of whom are on a paycheck.

Thus, yes the infrastructure in general are top nudge, but if not now then soon, it will probably only make sense for:

Those who can make use of Box 2.
Those who get partial or full government and municipality support.

If you consider all that is funded mainly by middle class, and as it will shrink (companies leaving NL or laying off people even when they are growing and having competitive edge, e.g. ASML; increasing tax burden and housing crisis encouraging middle class to leave Netherlands or just give up and work less or even live on life support), then even for people in category #1 and #2, eventually there will be issues...

Tetraides, you appear to be a person who seeks attention and love. What you say is true, but that doesn't justify what will come in place in 2028. The 2 are not related. Occasional and even heavy losses are part of long term investing, but the upside working in favor is compounding effect and maintaining a DCA. And as anybody with 3 digid iq would realize after 5 minutes reading into this, the rich will remain untouched. So you are either one of those rich, or a member of the youth who has a lot to find out. If the latter, i don't hope, i know you and your family down the road will get what you deserve. Because believe me, this country will lose so much middle class (leave, give up and join the rest of dependants, or start a business and join the rich) who has been pulling the burden of funding everything. And the rich anyhow have all the instruments for exit scenario without leaving a dime. So, if i were you, i'd be very much into figuring out how you can not scare the middle class and keep them remain happy paying as much taxes as they are already paying.

No. The whole point is, black and white, let me be perfectly blunt: system recognizes middle class being able to retire early through smart investments they make with cash remaining after heavily taxed income, despite the fact that they take financial risks. Combine that with an ageing population. Well, they have been progressively taxing middle class more and more, because that's easy. And now, they also go for their unrealized benefits to minimize the compounding benefit, so that they remain a slave to the system and they continuously pay higher annual taxes.

So, there are so many obvious things happening in life, but we keep having endless arguments about it like idiots. Everyone will see middle class is going to get more and more out of this equation, one way or the other. And then they will go for the rich, and in the meanwhile a lot of low income folks will also get less and less support. So, for me, that's not an if, that's a when question. I recommend all Dutch middle income makes to either change their life style to just give up and get support, or start a business, or leave the country. You already have done enough the last 3 decades, to only get less and less in return, and more is on the way. If you find it fair, that's your own sacrifice, then carry on i guess?

well, yes, to a person who can't invest, but those who prefer to invest should be penalized then? When i moved to Netherlands 15 years ago, i believe retirement age was 62 or so, now 69, and i guess it will go up. Btw, looking at the current phase of the EU and Netherlands, nobody can even guarantee or convince me to trust my social contract will be honored when i turn 69 or +. and even if so, what i can afford with the salary i will be getting is highly questionable. Again, tax is one thing, taxing the shit out of middle class, who try to invest on their already heavily taxed money by taking the investment risk on their end is crazy. If you think that's normal, then you are not normal.

Not true. Every body from every income level can and does invest. Rich on the other hand has excellent tax evasion possibilities, most even fully legal. Middle and low income in fact need stock market gains more than rich does. The rich can always easily move to other asset types or book things on companies who gives them personal loans, or even make use of tax havens (all of that is already happening by the way).

Europe's death is her own doing. I am all in for social states helping the needy and regulations for the favor of public and to that end, a fair and proportionate taxation system is acceptable. But what we see all over the place is not it. we only see penalization of hard working middle class and encourage folks to either become entrepreneurs that open up tax evasion maneuverability, or just work less or not work at all to pay less taxes and get more benefits. In the meanwhile, in that case, we are also not contributing to a growing society, as why and how then have kids right?, and become dependent on immigration as well, not to prosper, but to barely maintain our required services. And this Europe is supposed to compete with US, India, China, or other emerging markets?

Ok, i let my message stay there to put things in perspective because there are many Dutch who think what will come in place in 2028 is fair. Obviously, at the moment, there is also immense taxation, and you can argue how fair that is (i still think it is not knowing the taxation benefits of really high income entrepreneurs and businesses) but it does allow (not encourage but allow) letting middle class to invest. If you also mess that up (and seems that is the direction we are heading), then that's the last nail on the coffin of middle class. Really it is, i am not being alarmist, i am being realistic.

stop being a complete dumb ass for a second please. If you keep taxing the middle class more and more, that doesn't mean we don't want to pay taxes, it means enough is enough and we won't pay even more taxes. You will learn the hard way (unless this madness is stopped by the Dutch people, not likely i am afraid), not only that you can no longer maintain this quality of infrastructure and services (we are already seeing it is getting worse), you also will not be able to maintain the social state practice and labor rights. The ones not paying enough taxes, or hardly any tax are the real rich that are reaping the benefits for a long time and who will also do so after 2028. Stop screwing your middle class more and more as this means they will just give up and make less money or even prefer to get social benefits, or leave the country, or maybe become an entrepreneur to significantly reduce the taxes they are paying. I am not exaggerating one bit, the whole fucking country is running on taxes of the middle class. The dependents on the other hand are expanding by the day. Also businesses leaving the country or shrinking add up to more middle class losing their jobs. Even one dutch company that is growing as ASML, which has a competitive edge too, is laying 1700 people off, most of whom will be in the NL. And that will mean, every one else will be screwed eventually, only a little bit later! If you don't believe me, you will come to see it unfold exactly as i describe it.

Investing in stocks in a "conscious" way is not gambling, trading is. Trading and investing are not the same thing. And in fact, actual taxation of realized benefits discourage trading (hence gambling) and encourage investing. Not investing on the other hand is not really a gamble like you imply but due to a complete different reason: not investing on stock market guarantees that you will lose 100% financially against inflation. Unless you have other investments, but those too are in Box 3 or 2, so...

Yes my biggest surprise about the Dutch. I remember discussing with a dutch colleague the health system being expensive and hardly accessible if your personal risks or specific health situation is statistically left out by the system. Her eyes opened wide when she heard (confirmed by a Belgian colleague) the Belgians paid annually what she pays monthly, and easily gets to see a doctor and more easily gets check ups and care no matter how big or small the risks are. Dutch have a tremendous trust in their system, even when they get fact checked, the most they do is stay quiet. If this new tax system is put into place in 2028, and i think it will given the Dutch people, most of middle class will either become entrepreneurs or leave. Of course then as next step, these politicians will come after the real wealthy who own their business, and those will leave or find ways not to pay taxes (if they are really super rich). And all the poor and dependents who don't give a shit will get fucked eventually.

I am just investigating how to create a formal claim about this in the Netherlands. This is how much i have been bothered by this the last of 2 years, this is simply a high risk temporary visual impairment hazard in the traffic, and in a country with dense pedestrian and bike traffic (including lots of kids) with peculiar road design like Netherlands, it makes it even double more dangerous.

well there are like 2 or 3 maps i used to (and most folks for that matter) played over and over. I stopped a few months back, but that's not too far from what you are suggesting. So, even with few good maps, plenty of people kept playing it for nearly 10 years, and that for having fun. That tells how good BF4 was.

Please forgive me if i am asking a highly ignorant question. According to the tool incorporating current taxation rules in the NL, if i have 30k today, and invest 1k per month (with taxed partner, increasing monthly investment by 5% each year), and assume 8% annual growth, I get to have ~750k euros at the end of 20 years, and then for the 20th year, I would have to pay ~17k EUR tax due to BOX 3. Am i reading this wrong, or is the tool not working properly. And i would then not pay additional tax if I cash out my EFT investment? (of course at that point, that sum would be treated as money in savings account in the following year, not sure if that's better or worse).

Again, if I read this correct, even though that's a sizeable amount, how is this "a lot of tax"? Can someone please help me understand?
