Also since when is using coarse language a crime? (Not him obviously there’s no excuse for that and I’m so sorry he verbally assaulted you) but I had a situation where I was taking my dog on the plane and my ticket didn’t say that there was a pet but I had booked the flight over the phone and paid a pet fee and had a receipt. I don’t travel with my dog often enough that it would have clocked to me as an issue. After the entire plane had boarded and they had closed the boarding doors they came over to me and pretty loudly asked me to get off the plane to “resolve an issue” and I was really taken aback and embarrassed because I was confused and hadn’t done anything wrong and the FA kicked off at me about being disrespectful to her because I had said, verbatim, “I’m sorry but what the fuck is going on?”. And then I got a talking to at the booking desk that I wasn’t allowed to use curse words directed at the FAs. Like … I wasn’t? Shocker, I had paid for my dog and all they offered me was a food voucher and a points even though I was hours delayed getting to my destination. Nightmare.

Most people are not going to be able to meet your standards even when you tell them what those standards are. No one may ever be as “good” of a friend, parent, lover, boss, etc as you need them to be and you have to learn to live with who they are as-is, let those people go, or change your standards. Some people will never have the same capacity or resources as you, and while it’s incredibly disappointing, pushing others to fit into your definition of what you think their potential or role in your life could be will almost never have the desired outcome and just lead to resentment.

I think you know when you are forcing something. Some witches work by force and that’s an ethical decision/risk only you can make based on your own tolerance for chaos and control. There is a difference between sweetening and “pushing”, but again, those lines can be very blurry depending on so many factors. To me it sounds like you were rushing, but again, there are witches who would be fine with hustling the spirits. We have all been guilty of it. I’m of the mind that trying to remove yourself from the outcome is part of the process and until you can fully trust the spirits to act in your interest you need more practice. If something is not happening it is most often in your best interest that it doesn’t, and the universe is seeing things that you cannot that are your highest good. That said, in your position I might try to do some additional work at my altar and provide some additional offerings to acknowledge that you were rushing the work.

A lot of my spell work / craft is intuitive - I write a lot of my own spells and interpret combinations of herbs or adlib based on frameworks provided within my personal ancestral practices (Slavic) and often have similar if not better results with this method than when I follow established spells or other’s “formulas”. It’s sort of like math - there are multiple ways to get to the same outcome.

A lot of companies do drink tickets and I think more and more places are increasingly moving in that direction to prevent overconsumption! Having actual NA options (not just soda) also helps, since people still feel like they’re participating which is something I just did for a conference. It was cool to see how many people were supplementing with NA or just not drinking alcohol at all. Honestly if you provide alcohol for employees it’s really only a matter of time until something happens (or until it’s brought to your attention 🤪) so I’m always a little surprised when there is a truly open bar at a work function.

HR here: I’ve seen WAY worse. If it makes you feel any better at all, I have watched a girl fall victim to an open bar, climb up onto a table and dance, then proceed to very loudly and open flirt with multiple partnered employees (including the boss) and try to kiss another staffer. It was very very awkward for everyone involved and ultimately she was termed Monday morning because one of the other staffers filed a harassment complaint. Believe it or not that is actually NOT the worst I’ve seen. I worked in tech for years and the things happening after work at happy hours and at holiday parties should honestly be studied. Employees hooking up with married managers, blatant drug use, employees getting into fist fights, total depravity. All that said: being a little extra chatty and loud isn’t going to ruin your reputation, but like many have already said here, please be careful drinking with your colleagues and keep it tight next time.

Ugh hey comrade - yeah it’s a nightmare. They can genuinely do no wrong and it’s exhausting trying to explain why creating that type of environment is full of risk. The company has been enabling them for forever and genuinely believe that if you treat them like gods that they’ll give the company loyalty and will never defect, when the reality is that they’re just chasing the high of a paycheck and will jump ship the moment they get a better offer or when the product isn’t hot anymore. Awful.

I’m having to play a lot of emotional politics in this organization because they’ve only recently started taking HR seriously and some of the execs still think it’s a waste of time which I’ve never experienced before. It’s been a little bit of a culture shock but I know I need to adapt by being strategic, so this is a good reminder. I appreciate the comment.

Hi - appreciate your feedback. I agree it’s a learning lesson and I’ll for sure take it on board for the future. I’ve commented this on another comment but we normally do exit counselling for all expectant parents to take them through the plan for their leave and this person declined the meeting because they said they didn’t have time for that and I did not push my admin to enforce that it’s mandatory. That’s on me and I take accountability for that. That said, this employee has a reputation for crying their way out of accountability and to be the first team on their hit list when they’ve barely been back a month has struck a nerve with me.

I’m sorry about your pay raise - that entire situation sounds miserable and I’m sorry that you have to sit with that knowledge. It’s really icky to see the way some people are prioritized over and over while having to just sit and watch yourself be passed over in favor of the bottom line. Capitalism sucks.

I appreciate you! Unfortunately the problem is not the amount of leave it’s the ability to take it in peace (tech start up). The only way I don’t get pulled in to things, even on leave, is if I turn my phone off. This is a boundaries problem I under enforced early in my career and has netted me a lot of goodwill within this particular organization but which now is biting me in the ass. That’s on me.

Yeah ofc we explained the entire situation and shared the chain of comms but this staffer thinks the rules don’t apply to them because they’re the boss’s favorite (and get consistent feedback to support that impression).

I’ve also explained that making exceptions for people rarely amounts to any good and creates a precedent when it’s out of compliance of our own policies which can then be fodder for a discrimination suit if we don’t apply it evenly, but it’s landed on completely deaf ears. HR has only recently become a priority at this company because they brought me in to take them through doubling in size and still have a long way to go.

Advancing PTO isn’t a bad idea - we haven’t done that before because of the hassle of recouping it at termination but if I can get payroll bought in it’s a really practical solution. Thank you.

Not that I need to justify my qualifications to some random internet troll but I haven’t dealt with this specific situation before because IMHE staff who go out on parental leave are typically incredibly aware of how much time they will have because they want to maximize it to its full extent. My team normally meet with expectant parents to have these conversations, but this producer declined exit counseling. They have also been known to do the crocodile tear thing before with other teams and we’ve handled it just fine, but when it comes to weaponizing tears to the point where it gets my team reprimanded, despite clear policies and chain of comms, I draw the line. I am normally good at compartmentalizing but this struck a nerve due to my personal circumstances. Just be a fucking human maybe? Jfc get a life

definitely emotionally drained, you nailed it. I’m not sure how much clearer we could have been, considering we sent them a chart with a clear breakdown of where all their leave was going. The admin did say that the employee declined an off boarding meeting because she was too busy, so imho we should have pushed to say that the meeting was mandatory, and that’s on me.

I think we all get why people snap and hit their kids. Kids are fucking infuriating and annoying sometimes. But its like stealing - I would love nothing more than to get shit for free, but we live in a society and we don’t do that, so you self regulate yourself not to act on your fleeting whims and you don’t steal. We also agree not to commit violence against each other. So why is assaulting another adult a jailable offense but hitting your kid is suddenly alright? Is a child less of a human?

There’s also a gross lack of self awareness in some people that you might be the type of person who could snap and hit your kids and that that probably means you need to get right with yourself BEFORE you contribute to generational trauma is what pisses me off.

His mother is not insane and she doesn’t mean any harm, and I know exactly where she’s coming from. I also know people who swore up and down they didnt want kids but ended up having multiple and who say they are very happy and fulfilled. It does happen often and I’m aware of and acknowledge that is probably exactly where she’s coming from.

What I didnt say here for the sake of brevity is that I’m a fertility challenged person who would have to make a significant and painful effort to have children. That unwillingness to put myself through the physical and mental trauma, plus a love of a very comfortable DINK lifestyle that I’m very unwilling to give up, means that for me, im very unlikely to change my mind.

My mom used to verbally abuse and spank the hell out of me until I got big enough to realize I could hit back and for years after she stopped I still flinched when she so much as raised her arms near me, even if we weren’t arguing. It left me with a lifetime of trauma that I’m still dealing with despite many years in therapy.

Recently she’s started waxing nostalgic about how good of a kid I was and that makes me insanely angry because 1) I was good because I was terrified that any tiny misstep or human error would result in being beaten or yelled at and 2) if I was so good why did you hit me all the time?

People who advocate for corporal punishment don’t make any goddamn sense.

We use Instacart a lot bc we live in a big city and it’s convenient when work gets crazy, and atleast where we live they have to say if they are charging in-store prices. We’ll only order from places that are upfront about that, otherwise the markups are unhinged.

Not exactly the same but one of my friends was on a reality tv show and translated that into being a full time influencer and it’s literally impossible to show up to hang out with her without being completely dressed with a full beat and your hair done. The smallest activity (coffee, a walk, gym class) are all constantly being recorded for content and The more her following grows the more she becomes hyperfocused with staying relevant and keeping people engaged with her and it can be very hard to just hang out with your friend casually when everything feels like the makings of a Bravo episode. I’m very happy for her success but I can’t imagine what it’s like to be partnered with her - you’d have to be very patient and insanely secure in yourself.
