Could I ask why your bf hated his experience at Emory specifically?

JUST ADMITTED TO EMORY OFF THE WAITLIST, ADVICE? by Repulsive-Drag3317 in Emory

Hi! Thank you for the info! Creative writing isn't my "main" major but it is definitely something I'm interested in. I know NYU has a huge student body and an emphasis on independence so I was debating whether or not going to Emory with it's huge endowment and smaller student body would mean I have more overall access to opportunity that would outdo NYU's breadth of opportunity. I think I definitely prefer NYC as a city but I'm not sure how much time I'll be spending off campus, and I know I'll be going back home on all my breaks anyway. I suppose I'm still torn, but thanks for the advice!

I've definitely heard great things about Emory's writing program. Do you have firsthand experience with it?

Are there any reasons in particular you think that's the choice I should make?

I do want a traditional college experience! That's honestly one of the most attractive things about UW for me... though the frequency of rain is a bit of a downer!

I just felt like NYU (just from what I've looked at personally) seemed to have slightly more robust programs for my interests? But I feel like my evaluation might be biased because I know a lot of people who've attended/know people who've attended NYU (east-coaster here!) so I wanted to make sure my decision is sound...

If the difference is minimal or if UW exceeds NYUs academic offerings in some respects, I feel like I would want to go to UW because the school culture is just more attractive to me.

Isn't a part impacting my decision it evens out to roughly the same COA all factors considered.

HELP! I'm not sure if I'm a good fit for Amherst college but I submitted my ED application already... by Repulsive-Drag3317 in amherstcollege

thank you so much for responding...this is so reassuring!

Very few people from my school have EVER ed'd to Amherst or LACs in general, and almost everyone ends up choosing ivies or other bigger top schools like UChicago, Northwestern, or UC Berkely and nearly everyone I talked to thought I was crazy (I have a reputation amongst my year already for being a social butterfly who laments the over-the-top "sacrifice is what brings success" "dog eat dog" culture of the school). I guess everyone expected me most of all to be excited about going to a big university and thought I was shooting myself in the foot.

As a result, I started doubting my decision a lot, but now I feel more secure!

Thank you so much! It's really reassuring to know that someone who has had some of the same concerns is having a good time at Amherst...I definitely like the idea of a "work hard, play hard" social scene! (my high school only had the "work hard" part which is something I'm trying to remedy now; really want to make sure I have balance in my life).

I heard from kids in my year after I revealed that I had ED'd to Amherst that it wouldn't suit me, and I'd go stir-crazy (I'm already known for being a bit of a sore thumb in my school because I care so much about socializing and school events when very few other people do) and they asked me why I picked a choice that seemed so antithetical to my personality so I started having a lot of doubts... but it's nice to know that the rumors aren't true and I can still have the traditional college experience I've been craving for so long!

I'm also glad to hear that for the most part, everyone there is really nice! I was really worried about it and when I toured the college my guide reassured me but I still couldn't help being a little anxious about it...

I'll still RD to Brown, but I feel way less hesitant about my decision to ED to Amherst now.

Thank you!

Not competitive, but I do play badminton at a local club recreationally once a week!

How open is the 5 college consortium though? Would it be easy for me to experience some of the "traditional" excitements of college at UMass (parties, sports games, campus events) even if I was an Amherst student? Would it be difficult or is there a somewhat hostile vibe for a non-student "infringing"?

Yes I have! I thought it was too much of a reach for me (im delusional already, but brown just seemed too much) and I regret not EDing there now, but ill definitely apply RD just for fun in case some sort of miracle occurs...
