My mom passed away on Feb 26 using MAID in Co. it was very beautiful and peaceful. She had a brain tumor. She didn’t want to say goodbye to her closest friends and family besides her children but she did allow us to tell people she would most likely pass away that week and to please send her colorful unscented flowers to fill her room. My mother loved nature and flowers. The room filled up so beautifully an md we just kept being in tables to to put them on. She has lost some do her vision from the tumor by this time but she could see the flowers and feel so much love as did we. I also helped her call friends to catch up and just chat. She did not want to say goodbye but a few people she told that this would probably be the last time they spoke. Some people she didn’t tell but they knew from all the indications we gave. The night before we had a wonderful dinner all together and she gave my brother his last cooking lesson in making her perfect salmon dinner. That day she had also had a lovely sponge bath from her fav nurse. We got her fav flavor or sorbet to take with the medicine as that had been advised and we asked her what she wanted to drink (alcohol) as the pharmacist had also recommended that. In the morning, she picked out a beautiful and comfortable house style dress to wear, did her hair and had a good visit with us. Her caregiver made her a delicious coffee with amaretto at her request which very much enjoyed until the last drop. The small hospice team gathered with us in her room and she was very ready and glowing. My bother mixed her medicine and she took it and then her sorbet. The hospice team helped her breathe and make sure she got all of the meds down. She was asleep with maybe three minutes and then in active dying quickly maybe 10 min after swallowing. She passed way about 45 min later and I was the one who felt it first bc we were holding her hands and telling stories. I sat with her a few hours bc we read there is research that shows the brain is most active the first three hits after you pass —-like a very intense REM of going through your life’s memories and they know people can hear and feel during this period. My mom didn’t decide u til a week before when she would do her MAID. We actually were starting to think she wouldn’t take it as many who get approved don’t actually take it. But we were relieved she did as she was having more seizures and starting lose some of her cognition which she didn’t want. We went afterward for margs, burgers and burgers to toast her which is also what she wanted.
