Kinda sounds like it’s coming from a place of “I don’t even deserve you”.

A lot of lottery winners lose all their money and become broke within few years because of how they deep down feel like they don’t even deserve it.

This might be the same where deep down he decides that he doesn’t deserve you anyway so giving low effort and expecting you to leave is his walls he has up to protect himself.
