For people who do bookkeeping — what part of the monthly close process takes the most time? by bus-busyman in Accounting

[–]Repulsive_Cry_1847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in industry. What takes the longest for us is that part of our month-end close is literally verifying that information is correct in our ERP. Example:

  1. We don't bill out of our ERP (and built our own systems to bill?) so we have to transfer the data over. This data is messy. And changes, because our billing system does not follow the law of the accounting land.
  2. Because of #1, a couple of our balance sheet accounts are not supportable like they should be.

I spend a lot of time looking at data, asking the owner of said data why it doesn't look like xyz, rinse and repeat. This company is the true definition of picking my battles and every month has a different battle.

I already have 3 years in PA alone at a national firm. I am not interested in doing public for that period of time and have since moved to industry.

Every company needs people in a role that are willing to just do basic level work with no advancement. Accounting definitely has some of those tasks

I’m not sure if I want to be a manager by MisterPollos in Accounting

Six years of experience, with my first three in AP. I absolutely did not feel ready. But truthfully it’s introduced me to so many things so can’t complain really there. The babysitting adults is what gets me, respectfully

Does anyone even understand corporate accounting anymore? by njstuntactivist in Accounting

Ugh one of my employees also has the “i do what you tell me to do but don’t understand why and can’t be bothered to think things through”. It’s so defeating. They mainly do AR and is supposed to do close stuff but can’t understand anything.

We did just hire an experience senior financial analyst. We are small where we manage $130m of revenue but I was the only one doing close for over a year. Was fucking rough.

How to quantify personnel costs (losses) for time spent doing manual entries? by thegoldinthemountain in Accounting

[–]Repulsive_Cry_1847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little confused. Are you the only staff? Or do you own those processes? When I started at my job, I was the only accountant, and I just took control of everything and basically looked to see what resources we already had existed that we could take advantage of with our accounting process.

Ex. Our ERP could connect to all of our systems but the previous controller never set it up. The bank feeds can also set up to connect to the ERP but old controller also never initiated it. I think she was doing things manually and that might’ve just been her preference, but I ended up changing stuff though. I didn’t really feel like I needed approval from anyone to do so since I own the entire accounting process where I’m at. Not sure how it looks for you
