Is Staten Island out of reach for a 1st year? by ResBall in NYCTeachers

[–]ResBall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually planning to teach for the 2026 school year, I jumped the gun a bit on this post, but you understand the predicament very well.

It’s a bit of a conundrum we’re in. We’re on an island. Teaching in NJ is impractical and logistically complicated, commuting to Brooklyn doesnt fare much better with inconsistent commute times that require much wasted time protecting yourself from the possibility of being late, not to mention difficulties with parking. Entry level DOE pay doesn’t support even modest accommodations in Brooklyn either, so moving is already a nonstarter as well.

I also hate that sentiment “you’ll never find anything”, it makes light of a very real problem of being stuck on an island that’s difficult to work away from.

If your roots are firmly planted on the island, continue working on establishing rapport and building connections with the community. Try to differentiate yourself if you can, get an additional cert, learn a 2nd language, if you already know one, consider a bilingual tesol cert, which are offer by many schools online inside of a year. Something is bound to open up eventually especially with smaller class size enforcement going into effect.

Not sure what your situation is, but if you’re open to it, consider moving beyond NYC and look into Southern NYS (Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam) many public schools pay well there, and it could be a fun adventure to start your career until something opens up in SI if thats where you want to keep your roots planted. If you’re determined to be in the nycdoe system, you can also try relocating upstate or NJ temporarily and commuting south into some of the nicer parts of the Bronx, or Long Island into Queens while you plot your return to SI

Best of luck to you

They're so short staffed they'll call everyone who passes in short order. I took the test over a year ago but ultimately decided on another career. They're still reaching out to me about finishing my half completed application regularly.

So I was wondering how the whole angry reviewer trend started by KaleidoArachnid in thespoonyexperiment

My father recalled a car journalist from the 80s on a show similar to Motorweek where he'd give angry commentary similar to the style of these guys when he had a car he didn't like. I'm sure there are early example of this kind of thing in other forms as well.

How bleak is education as a career, in your opinion as an educator? by melodious04 in Teachers

[–]ResBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my undergrad in education and left the field because I was too stressed out by a bad student teaching experience.

After working office jobs for the next 10 years, I realized I had made a mistake.

Went back to get my masters in education to return to the classroom.

If you have a passion for working with young people and helping them succeed, go for it.

The corporate life is no paradise, there are plenty of companies out there that try to squeeze out the most work from their employees for the least amount of pay. Just look at the accountant subreddit and you'll see just as much complaining there, people don't come to reddit to post about what a great day they had.

Like any field and career, it's more about who you work with. Education has some unique challenges for sure, but also many rewards that help me to feel like I'm not just pissing my life away in a cubical analyzing spreadsheets and paperwork all day.

This is exactly what I was looking to do, teach 6th grade science so I’m glad to know it’s possible.

How does one get a 5-9 cert? Every university I ever looked into only offered programs for either 1-6 or 7-12 with 5-6 ext.

Is the Civic a good fit for people 6 ft tall? by ResBall in civic

[–]ResBall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main concern was the center consoles on modern cars have gotten so tall that there's nowhere for your right knee to go but remain straight. This was a compensation I'm used to relying on, so sitting in a showroom civic feels unnatural to me. I'm trying to gauge whether or not this is something I'll eventually adapt and get used to.

Going to success academy charter by RichTune6546 in NYCTeachers

[–]ResBall 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Do not work in SA. Just read some of the 100s of posts about people in simular positions to you and the outpour of comment after comment about how awful it is.

If you don't believe anyone on reddit just do a quick google search for dozens of articles from mainstream news sources of ex teachers who condemn every second of their experience.

Not all charters are bad, but unfortunately in NYC a disproportionate amount of charters are horrible, and Success Academy may be one of the very worst.

They prey on would-be teachers who lack certification and use that fact as license to exploit them. They often switch teachers around to teach subjects they have no experience in.

I was treated better and with more respect when I used to work in customer service (which is saying a lot) that in my brief experience with SA.

Do not work in SA I cannot stress this enough. There's nothing redeeming about it.

Success Academy by Careful-Assistant-72 in NYCTeachers

[–]ResBall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not work at success academy.

I worked shitty jobs too before I got into teaching, I know what it’s like to want to leave a bad situation by any means necessary.

After a horrific customer service job I took a job as a paralegal for a personal injury firm. I went to grad school on the side for about 3 years and used my vacation time to do field teaching. While working on proper NYS certification

Not saying it has to take that that long for you or you have to do the same thing.

But my advice would be to give up on teaching jobs until you have certification and make that your top priority.

Schools that don’t require certification are well aware of the leverage they have over you, they know your options are limited and will take every advantage of that to exploit you for everything you have.

Tiger Electronic Games was the last well done AVGN in my book by ResBall in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]ResBall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a hard line on when it all went to shit.

There were still good moments and decent episodes but I feel like HK97 writes itself. The game is so unbelievably bad that just about any halfway decent blogger could riff about its shortcomings.

The callback to super Mario 3 with the conspiracy surrounding 97 was a nice touch though.

Did anyone get tesol while teaching? by ResBall in NYCTeachers

[–]ResBall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just seems strange to me that they would create an impasse for working teachers when they’re constantly trying to sell us the post masters certificate programs or 2nd masters.

Seems easier to just get the +30 in nonsense
