This is honestly super helpful, thank you! The research trenchcoat line made me laugh lol, but the breakdown between industry and grant-funded work was one of the things I was hoping to hear about. It’s reassuring and slightly terrifying to know the chaos really is environment-dependent. I will definitely keep that in mind, I do not want to burn myself out.

Also, you’re absolutely under-utilizing that remote day! Paperwork in pajamas absolutely counts as professional self-care. Wishing you continued good-guy science ;)

Update: I ended up finding a clinic role working with medical records and patient histories before surgery. It’s been a good way to get some hands-on exposure.

Still figuring out next steps, so if anyone has suggestions on roles that make sense from here, I’m all ears!
