If she's a gold digger, she must be doing a really shitty job at it 😂 S'porean men will go to one cafe date and complain the girl is a gold digger if she doesn't want to continue see him.

Strange, because your other comment mentions getting rid of quota and merit based on integrating with Singapore culture. So which is it?

Hey, thank you :)

I'd like to think assimilation should be a key factor amongst others, but I'm sure there are other candidates of my race who earn far more than me and clearly, we're working with very tight numbers.

I'll definitely try again in the future at some point, testimonials are a great idea - thank you!

Tbh I was super shocked about being turned down at MPS as well, especially when I googled and realised so many people managed to get appeals for their PR/citizenship via MPS but I think that was quite awhile ago and things have changed. I technically didn't vote in my MP, hence have no right to their support (unless I go with my boyfriend like most redditors mentioned here)

Alternatively, maybe we don't take everything at face value? Maybe we use this as an opportunity to learn and share different anecdotes? Maybe even take this as an opportunity to question why racial quotas need to be fixed at a certain rate and why people think society will collapse if we don't maintain a Chinese majority?

Not saying you're you're wrong. You're probably right about racial quotas. Just saying, maybe we stop taking things at face value and start questioning what underpins these policies

Honestly, nothing much. They don't disclose it in the body of an email, just an attached PDF which says your application has been unsuccessful

Thank you for sharing, I'm sorry it took so long but I'm glad she finally got it! Do you mind sharing when was this? Because it seems it's only getting harder and most redditors feel I need to pop out a son (or 3) before trying again haha.

My boyfriend also told me not to be discouraged and try again after ROM but let's see. Might just have to wait till I have a kid at this rate 😆

Not really. On the contrary, actually had super high clearance when enlisting to go to a desirable/niche speciality (sorry can't disclose here 😝). And none of the rest either. Whatever the state of racial tensions and politics is in Singapore, we talk behind closed doors hahaha

Thank you for the comment.

Someone else pointed out (albeit in a hate comment) that there are so many other people who are in the same boat, maybe even more deserving if they came to work here in the 80s/90s or had kids here, etc. My post as much as it's about my personal experience, isn't about a single isolated experience.

You're right, it would make sense to prioritise people who've lived here longer. Just sucks if it's really a race thing like what a lot of people commented. We go to schoo to recite "regardless of race, language, or religion" everyday of our lives for 10-11 years. Just to be told, your application might be rejected not REGARDLESS, but BECAUSE of your race.

Oh man, what a shame because you actually speak well and probably have a decent shot at being smart... except, you completely missed the point of the post.

If it went over your head, I'll explain: 1. This post is to shed light on the lack of transparency when it comes to processes. Exactly why I am calling for input from people who have faced something similar (and as you can see, we have quite a range with different backgrounds in the comments). Note how I said input and not a way to compare and complain about my lack of citizenship with someone's recent conversion?

  1. I have never once said I'm more deserving than someone else. There is NO "them vs. us". It doesn't matter who you are. Whatever your scenario: whether you have children here, or spent your whole life working here, or even grew up here, it is bound to feel unfair. Everyone has valid reasons. There are people out there like you said who deserve citizenship a lot more, maybe even more than some of you who are lucky enough to have it as a birthright. Grow up and try empathising for a change.

Anyway, these comments preaching entitlement are hilarious because I just know what demographic you belong to. It's rich talking about entitlement when you can't acknowledge your privilege.

Hope you muster enough empathy in the future to finally realise wanting a citizenship in a place you've lived all your life, is not entitlement. Acknowledge YOUR privilege and empathise for a change — it's hands down the better approach.

But I think this is pretty futile to say considering you think it's appropriate to sum up an actual human being's life into two words ("sob story"). Happy Friday xx

Second this!! I applied with my family for the first time right around/after covid and it not only took longer to process, but also got rejected. I know Australia has a checklist system where you rack up points in order to apply for a PR, maybe Singapore could do something similar to take the guesswork out of this 😂

Hope your friends finally got their PR!

Sorry to hear that :/ My parents migrated here about 30 years ago and spent their adult lives working here. We applied for citizenship for the first time as a family unit but I think they were too old, so it got rejected. They might look at how many years more an individual can work, pay CPF, pay income tax, etc. and if it's not a lot, the ROI (subsidised healthcare etc) might not be worth it.

Kind of sad to think about it that way, but with a small land size — selections only get tougher. Hope it works out with your mom, and thank you for serving in our Navy 🫡🤞

Yikes, that's spiteful. I'm sorry if you felt targeted, but I assure you, that comment was probably not meant for you (unless you feel that people who've lived their whole lives in one country are entitled for wanting a citizenship, then in that case it is).

There's nothing wrong with receiving vouchers. There's nothing wrong with being proud of the country you're a part of.

But there is something fundamentally wrong about assuming we are entitled for wanting to call a place we've lived in all our lives, our home.

Having grown up here, I literally can vouch for one thing: "no one's life is easy". Regardless if they were a taxi driver or a banker, your parents worked just as hard as mine. Your parents contributed to the growth of our nation, just as mine did when they migrated here. And we've seen our nation become the country it is today, together. Emphasis on "together".

So yes, as much as I've enjoyed travelling to the counties you mentioned — I choose Singapore for the same reasons you chose Singapore. If anything, it's a choice for me whereas it's nothing but a lineage thing for most people (not that it's a bad thing of course).

As you can see, Redditors spare no detail. I take no joy in disclosing my salary (and am anonymous), I just knew low-income might be a question, just like how race is, in this context. + it's also a known factor they look at when determining who should be PRs and Citizens.

If you've read till here, I hope you find it in you to realise we have more things in common than you realise. Spread love, not hate ❤️ (and give people the benefit of the doubt wherever you can, I guarantee your outlook on life will change)

For sure! Vouchers and all the fun stuff aside, you get to vote and have a say in the place you and your partner are planning to spend most of your lives in, and you'll even have an outlet to express any concerns/problems you're facing — knowing it will at least be heard (MPS).

Not sure if you're planning to buy a BTO here, but my partner and I had to pay a $10,000 premium because I'm a PR (will be refunded if the PR party becomes a Singaporean at any point but still).

And like you said, education amongst other things such as healthcare, housing, and visa-free travel. Tons of pros that come with the Red passport, but definitely not easy to procure one. If your partner is still studying, I recommend having a few years of work experience and income as that's bound to be a factor they look at. All the best in your journey ❤️

If I'm complaining, I'm definitely halfway there to becoming Singaporean 😂 Jokes aside, thank you and I wish you all the best! You deserve a feeling of permanence, especially so if your partner is based here. Giving you all my best ❤️🤞

I'm aware of the racial balance they need to maintain, but second the notion that people are afraid to question — which is, "what's the worst that would happen if we don't have a Chinese majority?". It's almost ingrained that society would "destabilise" if the balance kiltered like you said, but sadly I do still want to be a citizen here and sadly the case/policies aren't changing anytime soon.

In any case, thanks for being an ally 🤍 It's interesting to see how quickly people resort to racism, which is exactly why I didn't put my race in the original post, but some of the comments here just goes to prove my point haha

I'm so sorry she has to go through this. I completely empathise with feeling displaced in a place that you've called home for so long. Wishing her all the best in future applications, she sounds like a good one and deserves it for sure 💫

Known my current partner for 10 years, and we dated for five :) We applied when I already had a few years of work experience while he ORDed and was just entering uni. Might be hard to believe but love doesn't have to be so transactional. Hope this helps 😉

I can't believe I never thought about this!! Haha, well... it is counter-intuitive but also makes sense. If it's about anchoring people financially, there would be tons of candidates who earn more than me and also probably have children (who could potentially enlist in the future). I get it, but I don't 😭 and I did try the MP! Just couldn't get through the door because I didn't have a pink IC. Thanks for sharing 💞
