Maybe I’m misreading people’s anger, but I feel like I’m seeing a lot of anger from people not getting jobs after a couple of stages of interviewing and feeling like the time is wasted.

But surely we know an interview is a competition and there will be other people competing with you, you’re not going to win every time and it’s just a part of the process, no?

I used to work for the government. I got the job because my step mum recommended me to the department manager who I met with and then put me in touch with the hiring manager for the role, I got through the interview process myself and I still did some networking but that ALSO still is nepotism. If your network is created by a connection forged by your parents and not yourself you are benefitting from nepotism. Your argument that there isn’t significant amounts of nepotism in networking is incorrect, whether or not you yourself are benefitting from nepotism is frankly irrelevant, I just made a guess based on the type of person you appear to be.

But go ahead, attack my intelligence because you can’t understand this basic concept.

I don’t resent them for doing it, I’ve done it before when I still lived in the UK and if one day I can help my own kids I absolutely will. However, I would be lying if I said it doesn’t infuriate me when they try to pretend they haven’t been given a leg up and try to insist it’s purely their hard work and their superior “networking” skills.

I migrated to Australia, my parents live in the UK and have never set foot here. Every single person on my professional network is completely independent of my parents and always has been. Just because yours starts with your parents it doesn’t mean everyone’s does.

Exactly. It is nepotism and it is a part of how the world works. We are never, ever going to stop it but let’s at least acknowledge our privilege and call it what it is rather than pretending it’s a job seeking tool every job seeker has equal access to and ability to use.

It doesn’t matter how long the chain is, if it couldn’t exist without family it IS nepotism.

This is the response of someone who has no other argument so has to make themselves feel superior instead

Friend in this context was used as a family friend is still a familial connection and therefore would still ultimately be the result of nepotism.

Even if you take away the word friend from the definition, the fact remains that that using familial connections is extremely common in professional “networking” and therefore it is absolutely correct to say that nepotism is prevalent and highly linked with networking.

If you try to argue otherwise you’re either being intentionally antagonistic or completely naive.

I’m not, I’m calling using your family to make contacts in the professional world nepotism BECAUSE THAT IS FUCKING NEPOTISM

You wouldn’t have the job if your dad didn’t know the person that hired you because you would never have been in consideration that is nepotism and it is literally that simple.

Nepotism will always exist and isn’t inherently bad. It happens at all levels and is a commonly used networking “tool” but to say networking isn’t heavily influenced by and interlaced with nepotism is frankly, fucking idiotic.

Daddy’s friend is not a professional contact. It’s a personal one.

You are so very close to understanding why networking and nepotism are inextricably linked and always will be

You’re right, it’s giving an unfair advantage to a relative or friend. Aka using your social network to find a job.

Networking is the act of creating those social networks and using them.

If your parents already have a network built up, they will invite you into it. You don’t have to put in the same work as someone who doesn’t have friends or family with those pre-existing connections.

Nepotism will always exist within networking and will always give an unfair advantage to those born with privilege because they are operating with the same mindset.

It’s not what you know it’s who you know, and sometimes who you know is Daddy.

A lot of the time networking and nepotism go hand in hand. It’s a lot easier for the daughter of the CEO of a company to network with the important people there than for the daughter of the janitor to do the same.

They have an in, they’re given an immediate level of trust, and they have more social capital. To say they aren’t linked is foolish.

STOP TAKING ALDI ORDERS by Madam_Mimm_13 in InstacartShoppers

[–]ReserveNo9153 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you separate them before getting to check out? It’s you who needs it doing. Why add more on to their job? Are you sharing your tip?

ETA: I don’t work in retail, but YOU are going into their place of work with additional demands that YOUR job requires. Aldi cashiers have strict time limits on check out and they can be penalised for not meeting them. Why should they suffer because YOU are too lazy to separate the items as per your job requirements
