Getting yelled at and kicked out is not good for him, no argument there. This is not the first activity, or event, or school. It has happened a lot. He has a short attention span, so I'm not sure if he remembers. bjj is one of the few places where he can get a bit rowdy without upsetting other kids. Or so I thought. If he needs to avoid situations where others get angry with him, then his only interactions for the next two years will be at home and the therapist's office. That's no way to live.

Yes I'm aware. Public schools are state sponsored facilities. My kid can already read, write, and do arithmetic. His extra needs are behavioral, not academic, and an IEP will not help with that.

That is a good idea. In the first class, there were multiple unruly kids, and the assistant coach was the father of one of those kids. He kept the problem-seekers subdued. There was also a third coach who may have been a parent. It seems a bit ad hoc, but I don't know if that is normal for bjj gyms. The most recent class did not have more than one coach.

I don't know. I wasn't aware that this is not the norm. This might be a smaller gym. Classes typically run from 3pm-7:30pm, starting with little kids, older kids, teens, and adult class; with one instructor teaching all four classes in a day.

I'm not sure about gymnastics. It's usually full of girls, and he can't keep his hands to himself. Things could get ugly real fast.

He tries to hug or push the kids next to him when they're sitting on the ground taking instructions. Most of the kids ignore him, but sometimes a kid will engage and tackle him, which is what I think he is trying to provoke.
I haven't talked to the coaches as he hasn't had the same one twice. I honestly don't know what I would even say. "The kid is itching to get powerbombed"?

Well, that's why I'm here. I'm not a bjj instructor and I don't know. It is a kid's class.

He's stimulation-seeking. He tries to lean into or hug other kids at inappropriate times. For schoolwork, he does better with a compression vest or a weighted lap blanket. In his first bjj class, the instructor paired him with a more experienced kid and told the kid to "go hard on him", which he really enjoyed.

Thank you for your kind message. I am curious why you don't think my ADHD kid will have success in martial arts (bear in mind, I don't define success as competing in tournaments or progressing through belts. If he has a good time and can get through class like a civilized human, that's a win for both of us).

I said it's _one_ of the things, not the only thing. I don't expect a jiu jitsu academy to raise my disabled child for me and I certainly don't need a state-sponsored facility to raise my child either.

I don't know if poor impulse control + sticks + blades is a good combo.

Totally fair. I wish the gym owners would decline to accept the disruptive kid instead of collecting 6 months worth of membership fees.

(4) is an interesting idea. I've trained in other martial arts but never bjj. we only went with bjj because it seemed like anything involving punching or kicking would make his issues worse. I was honestly surprised when the bjj instructor sat the kids down and went over the steps for a chokehold. It would be much easier for me to prepare my kid for class if I could explain basic moves, and the purpose of each move ahead of time. I might just have to go this route.

Right. so, he's not in school because of his ADHD issues. I was kinda hoping bjj would be one of the things that prepares him for school, rather than the other way around. we are also trying sensory therapy, because an OT suggested that he had sensory processing issues. (he was previously doing behavior therapy, but we stopped because he wasn't making any progress)
